Sorry I do not have information any further back than William Warner and Susannah Cox Hales. I do have dod of 2 Feb 1877 and Susannah as 24 Nov 1881 -- both are buried in New Carlisle Cemetery in New Carlisle, Clark County, Ohio. I will be out of town the next week so will be unable to do any research or replying to messages from you. Thanks for the information you have given me -- same as you I only have the most information on Charles and Mary Works Hales, since they are my direct descendents. I will contact my friend Ann Bergelt who has helped me in the past with Loundoun County VA records and see if she can come up with any other info on the grandparents of George and Charles.

Hi! George is shown with the family in the 1850 census in Loudoun county. By 1860, he was in Richland County OH. I believe there was also a daughter Mary Frances (b ~1830) who married James Bazill.

I figured out that my George from Richland County OH was Warner & Susanna's son George based on info in his Civil War pension file--it mentioned that he was born in Stafford County (which is where Warner was in 1840, 3 yrs after George's birth), and then apparently George was wounded or taken ill during the Civil War and his paperwork mentions that he was sent to stay with his mother in New Carlisle OH, which is very close to where Warner & Susanna were living in the 1860 census.

Most of the info I have relates to George & his descendants since I've been researching him for a while. I'm currently trying to figure out who Warner's parents were--do you have any info on them?

The other sources I have on Warner & Susanna are:
1821 married in Fauquier County VA (Viriginia Marriages 1740-1850)
1830 Warner shown in 1830 census in Stafford County VA (last name mis-transcribed as Bales)
1840 Warner shown in 1840 census in Stafford County VA
1850 Warner, Susanna and children Betsy, George, and William in Loudoun County VA in 1850 census (name is mis-transcribed as Haler)

In trying to find Warner's & Susanna's parents, I looked in Fauquier County in 1820 since they got married there in 1821. There's a Charles Cox in the 1820 census with a daughter the right age to be Susanna; VA marriage records show that he was married to Jane Reeve. They're currently my best lead on who Susanna's parents were, but I don't have proof. For Warner, there was an Elizabeth Hale (maiden name may have been Peyton) in Fauquier in 1820 with a son the right age, I believe she was the wife of William Heale who was in Fauquier in the 1810 census. I'm still exploring leads though, these are just the people that seemed the most likely so definitely appreciate any leads you might have.

I also have Warner and Susannah Cox Hales as the parents. Any exchange of information is greatly appreciated. Thanks for getting back to me.

Hello,
I'm pleased to find like-minded people searching for their past families. Thanks for any help you can offer. I would be happy to pass any information you might need as well.

I have been searching for John Hales born/died on the dates in Subject. He was born in Baltimore, married Jane Hall in 1786 and had a son named Andrew.

Records shows he lived his later years in Knox and Richmond, where he died. My interest is in his parents who are showing as Hugh and Jamima Hales but the dates for birth and death don't work out. John Hales may or may not be my ggggrandfather. Thanks in advance. Mary Ann had 6 children, I have all their b/c and m/c.
On the 1911 census Mary states she's married 15yrs to Alfred Stagg. Her death in 1916 was registered by Alfred Stagg, as Mary Ann Louise Hales widow of John Hales tinplate worker.
Can I assume from this that she and John were never married, as I have never found a marriage record?
I have a marriage for John Hales to an Annies Burrell in 1868, but she died in 1876 and John and Mary's first child was born in April 1877.
Can any one help please,
Regards
Jean

Oh my, this is excellent news! I have Hales family data from James Hales to present, and have recorded basic data for siblings to whom I'm not directly related. I'd be glad to pass this info on to you if it would be helpful. Thank you SO much for offering this help. Feel free to contact me at aecapo@comcast.net (likely best for sharing GEDCOM files.

Is your tree private? If I can, I'll try to post it here online unless I can get a hold of an email address that will work for me. I still only have my so-called smart phone for the internet. A phone number will work, too. I can send a text message with the photo attached.

John Hales of Gorleston, Suffolk, England

Looking for the birth of John Hales and his marriage to Judith Bultiude (bapt. Lound, Suffolk, in 1815). In three censuses 1851, 1861 and 1881, John Hales is consistent in recording that he was born in Gorleston, Suffolk. He is generally listed as being two years older than his wife Judith, giving his birth from 1813 to 1816. If we take Judith's birth as 1815, which corresponds with her baptism which we know, this would make John's birth around 1813. The only Hales baptism in Gorleston at this time which I can find, relates to one Francis John, son of John Hales and Lucy his wife/late Lucy Frances spinster. He was born and baptised 10th October, 1812. (see Gorleston Deanery of Lothingland, Bishop's Transcripts of Baptisms, 1812, Suffolk County Record Office, microfilm J406/67 952317.) It is possible that the name Francis, being a version of the mother's maiden name, was dropped by John early on. John and Lucy had two further offspring: William baptised 4th September, 1814 and Nelly, baptised 7th September, 1816. Equally, John may have been baptised at Hopton near Lowestoft but I have been unable to see the Hopton register. John Hayles married Lucy Frances on 22nd December, 1807 at Hopton, near Lowestoft. Hopton, is close to Blunderston. Again, I would like to see a copy of the Hopton near Lowestoft marriage register entry of John and Lucy. I also suspect that John Hales and Judith Bultitude married in Hopton near Lowestoft in circa 1837, give or take a couple of years, but need this confirmed or dispelled.

John Hales was a journeyman carpenter living in Blunderston, Suffolk in the mid 19th century.

There is a reference to a baptism of a John Hales at Blunderstone, Suffolk on the 30 January 1784, which could possibly be John's father. The `Corton, Hopton and Gorleston Inclosure (sic) Claims 1809 No. 9´ Y/D 75/1-8 Lucas & Wylls Solicitors (Yarmouth) in NRO, dated 5th July, 1809 - an account of the Estate belonging to a John Springall - shows he was "intitled (sic) in fee lying within the Parish of Hopton in County of Suffolk AND ALSO of the claims, rights and interests of the said John Springall in, to and upon the common heaths, marshes, doles, and waste lands within the said Parish of Hopton deleivered by himself to the Commissioners named in and appointed by an Act of Parliament passed in 49th year of the reign of King Geo III intitled “AN ACT for inclosing (sic) lands in the Parishes of CORTON, HOPTON and GORLESTON in the County of Suffolk” viz four cottages with the edifices buildings and appertences to the same county in the whole about one acre of land and being in the several occupations of John Welton, John Hales, William Brett and Margaret Buttle, The whole of which is freehold. AND the said John Springall in right of the said premises claims to be intitled to a right of common of pasture for all his commonable cattle levant and couchant thereon, over and upon the said common heaths, marshes, doles, and waste lands lying in the said Parish of Hopton at all times in the year AND ALSO to a right of cutting whins, fern and heath upon the said common heaths and waste lands for necessary fuel to be consumed within the said several cottages. Given under his hand this fifth day of July 1809 (Signed) John Springall." Thus, a John Hales (possibly the father) was occupying premises in the Gorleston, Hopton area in 1809.

Like most coastal Suffolk people, John must have helped with the herring fishing, which would explain his absence "being at sea" in 1841.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Alan Phillips

When you retrieve the family bible check and see if there is anything about grandpa. He never would talk about his side of the family only told us "if you ever run across any Hales they were probably kin to you". I haven't gotten back on ancestry.com in a long time, had to cut back on expenses but hope to start it back up next year. Have you been doing any research on the family yet? It's alot of fun to find all these records on our family. I've gotten alot of information on grandma's side (Mulkey) from Lillian Mulkey who lives in Helotes, Texas but grandpa I had to find on line and not really knowing alot about the Hales is hard to do. But I did find out who his father was and grandfather, but that's as far as I had gotten.

When you do get the family bible out of storage can I get you to make a copy of any information that was written in there for my records. If so let me know and I will send you my address. Thanks cousin

Yes, Chester was my dad's elder brother and my father was JP. I am James, named after my dad, the middle child of three siblings and the younger of two brothers. I can't remember if there was an eldest brother or not in Chet's and JP's family. All I do remember is that "Chet" was about 20 years older than JP. As a small child I remember going to the hospital (or nursing home) to visit "Uncle Chester," whom I had only known from my dad's stories, just before he died. Unfortunately, we children know very little of our Hales heritage.

Not too long before JP passed away, he and Clifford had reconnected and would occasionally visit at our family home in Three Rivers. I remember dad actually taking the time away from work for once in his life to watch my brother's graduation ceremony (Navy bootcamp) in California. He visited with his cousin (or some similar relation) in Redondo Beach. (I can't recall her name right now for some reason, but I know her from my dad's stories.) I hadn't seen my father so refreshed and happy since I was a small child when he was still in his 40s.

So, do you live in Texas? I have just recently moved back to south Texas and am currently living in Corpus Christi. Its nice to meet you, long-lost Cousin!

Hi,
We are researching our Hales family tree and we are having a few problems too. Our great grandfather was George Hales and he was married to Margaret Blanche nee Caldecott. George was born around 1831 in Wem, Shropshire. They had about 10 children. Our grandfather was Philip Henry Hales and he married our grandmother Gertrude Lilian Kirby in 1908 in Leighton Buzzard. At that time Philip was a widow, but we cannot find his previous marriage. They had 4 children Diana, Joan, Frederick John and Gerald Hales. There was talk of another child called Bernard, but we cannot find anything on him either. If anyone knows anything we would love to hear from you. You can email me at becca_helm@yahoo.com
Thanks.
Rebecca & Maggie

Re: hales, in Johnston co. NC before 1900. "Stancil Chapel?"

I wonder if Chapman Hayles/Hales (c. 1759-1836) was the father of Culia Hayles (c.1790/94-1840s) who married Kindred O'Neal (c.1785-1855) in Johnston Co. in 1810. They moved to Anson Co., NC by the time of the 1850 census.

In some posts I've seen it stated that Chapman's mother was named Milly Barrow. Kindred O'Neal and Culia Hayles named their first born daughter Millie.

Kindred & Culia had elevan children: Millie O'Neal (10 Jan. 1812-7 Jan. 1889, m. .A. Nelson Caddell), Zillah "Zillie" O'Neal (17 Nov. 1812-17 July 1882, m. Hugh A. Beachum, my line), Lucinda "Lucy" O'Neal (c.1814-9 Jan. 1851, m. Alexander Kiker), Spear O'Neal (c.1816-c.1851, m. Nancy ?), Phereba O'Neal (1818-16 April 1888, m. Isaiah S. Beachum, Hugh's brother), unknown daughter (born 1821/25, perhaps Zina O'Neal), Elizabeth/Eliza O'Neal (c.1824, m. John Gregory or McGregor), Mary O'Neal (1826-1905, m. Wiley Bowers), Nancy Ellen O'Neal (c.1828/30-1885, m. James Alexander Beachum, likely a nephew of Hugh & Isaiah), Martin S. O'Neal (c. 1830/1-27 Nov. 1850), unknown daughter (b. 1831/5, probably Lina O'Neal who married John Dunahoe).

I hope somebody might be able to give me some information about the Hales/Hayles family of Johnston Co.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
Email: Stearnsfield@aol.com
