Hi again Philippa

Firstly thanks for all the info you have posted. I would love to be able to get some copies of photos if you don't mind of any of the people I have mentioned in this below post, as well as a copy of this article from The Press in 1937 if you don't mind?

Secondly not sure if you are interested or already aware of this, but thought you might like to know if not. If you go to: http://www.timaru.govt.nz/index.asp?sidenav=servnav.html&amp... and then click on “online database search” and then type in the surname field HALFACRE (leaving the other fields blank) and hit the search button. It will bring up a record for Albert John HALFACRE. If you click on his record you will notice that someone has actually taken some photographs of his plaque, as well as his wife’s, Daisy Jane HALFACRE that you are able to view and safe to your computer should you wish to do so.

Here is all the info I know to date. If you are able to fill in any blanks I would be very appreciative.

One question that perhaps your family might be able to assist me with is that apparently my great-great grandmother, Georgina Harriet and her mother, Ann arrived in New Zealand in 1864 aboard the vessel, the British Empire. Apparently she was also an only child. Family legend has it that she is the daughter of royalty and that her mother worked at Buckingham Palace as a seamstress. There real surname is supposedly WILSON, but they changed it to DRIVER on there arrival at Lyttelton in New Zealand. Unsure why they would change there surname for? Are you aware if this story is fact or fiction?

Firstly I am the daughter of John Leonard HEDGES (born 1956 in Dunedin, New Zealand) and Patricia Ann NICHOLSON (born 1955 in Dunedin, New Zealand). Dad is the youngest of ten siblings (the oldest sibling, a girl was adopted out at birth; there was also a child that was stillborn and a half sister)

John's parents (my grandparents) were Thomas Cyril HEDGES (born on 09 April 1908 in Hastings, Sussex, England and who died in Dunedin, New Zealand on 04 July 1983) and Phyllis Irene BROWN (born in Christchurch, New Zealand on 23 February 1916 and died in Dunedin, New Zealand on 13 December 1987). Thomas was married once before to a person named Anetta Gwendoline CHRISTENSEN (my grandfather’s ex wife) on 26 May 1937 in Dunedin, New Zealand. She was born in Dunedin, New Zealand on 20 January 1907 and died in Dunedin, New Zealand on 14 April 1996. They had a daughter together (so a half-sister for my father, John and his siblings) named Pauline Ingrid HEDGES who according to there divorce papers was born on 08 August 1938.

Phyllis’s parents (my great-grandparents) were William Leslie Ronald BROWN (who was born on 18 August 1893 in Kowai Bush, Canterbury, New Zealand and died on 08 January 1967 in Ohangi Road, Normanby, New Zealand but whose usual residence was in Lower Hutt, New Zealand) and Mabel Susan BEATTIE (born on 06 May 1893 in Cotterill Street, Christchurch, New Zealand and died on 27 October 1966 in Lower Hutt, New Zealand).

William Leslie Ronald Brown’s parents were George James BROWN and Georgina Harriet DRIVER (my great-great grandparents).

George James BROWN (great-great father)
* Born: 07 May 1858 in Sandy Creek (today known as Tarnagulla), Victoria, Australia
* Died: 1943 in New Zealand. Refer to NZ Death Registration Number: 1943/30546.
* Married: Georgina Harriet DRIVER (great-great grandmother) in 1877 at a friend’s house in Sheffield, New Zealand by Rev. Potter as there were no churches in the area at the time. Refer to NZ Marriage Registration Number: 1877/3147.
* Info about Spouse: Georgina was born in approx. 1859 in London England. She died in New Zealand in 1940. Unsure about any other children at this stage.

#02: George Albert BROWN (my great-great uncle)
* Born: 1880 in New Zealand. Refer to NZ Birth Registration Number: 1880/3292.
* Died: 1958 in New Zealand. Refer to NZ Death Registration Number: 1958/23093.
Hi Philippa

Many thanks for your reply.

Amy Winifred Brown is my Great-Great Aunt (my fathers's mother's parents parents daughter ... hope that makes sense) and of course George Halfacre was my Great-Great Uncle (by marriage).

I look forward to hearing from you again and any information or photos you could provide would be very helpful, as unfortunately Dad's side of the family fell out with each other years ago, so I don't have any photos ... and it would be lovely to be able to get a hold of some so I can show future generations what there ancestors looked like :-).

Should you want any information about any of Amy's parents or brothers and sisters etc (or any other people I have on my tree that you would like to know about) please let me know and I will see what I can do. I have quite a few of there birth, death and marriage records which I could send to you (as a lot is on A3 it is probably easier for me to post rather than e-mail though) ... still in the process of getting the rest since she is from a rather large family.

My e-mail address is: snorkle6@orcon.net.nz.

Kind regards

Michaela

Looking for Info on George Henry HALFACRE, born approx 1871/1872 in Hampshire, England (and other relatives)

One of my queries relates to someone by the name of George Henry HALFACRE.

I am looking for any information, relatives and/or photos in regards to the below people:

He would have been born around 1871/1872 in Hampshire, England. In 1894 age 23, he got married in Hampshire, England to Emily RAGGET. George (who was a Farmer) and Emily apparently left London, England for Wellington, New Zealand on 11 June 1908 aboard the vessel, Rimutaka along with Master A HALFACRE, Miss D HALFACRE, Miss I HALFACRE and Master R HALFACRE (who I assume were there 4 children). On 18 September 1910, Emily died leaving George as a widow.

I assume Master A HALFACRE is Albert John HALFACRE (who was apparently born on 26 October 1904 in England I assume and died in 1977 in New Zealand); I assume Miss D HALFACRE is Daisy Jane HALFACRE (who apparently was born on 16 November 1910 in England I assume and died in 1980 in New Zealand); I assume Master R HALFACRE is Richard James HALFACRE who died in New Zealand in 1961 aged 55 years old. I am unsure who Miss I HALFACRE is though as couldn't find a death record for her in New Zealand. None of the children appear to have married and had children of there own (or at least in New Zealand anyway from what I can tell - could always be wrong though on that front). I wonder what became of Miss I HALFACRE. Did she perhaps die aboard the vessel on the way over to New Zealand, or did she move away to another country?

On 08 February 1915 George (now aged 42 and a Fishmonger) got married again. This time to an Amy Winifred BROWN (one of my ancestors - who was aged 32) at St. Paul's Church in Christchurch, New Zealand.

George and Amy had a girl who was born on 28 April 1916 in Papanui, Christchurch, New Zealand but she died a mere 2 days later on 30 April 1916 in Papanui, Christchurch, New Zealand from Inanition. I am unaware of any other children they had.

George's death certificate states his parents were Samuel HALFACRE (a Gardener) and Mary KNIGHT. George died on 21 June 1963 in Christchurch, New Zealand. He had spent 54 years in New Zealand. He was a retired Mixed Farmer. His second wife, Amy was born on 29 April 1882 in Kowai Bush, Cantebury, New Zealand. She died on 20 March 1960 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Her parents names were Georgina Harriet DRIVER who I believe was born in England and George James BROWN who was born on 07 May 1858 in Sandy Creek (today known as Tarnagulla), Victoria, Australia.

As for Tadley, I have not been there since my mate Phil Gundrey died on hid motor bike years ago.Might take a trip out to " treacle mine " country soon.Have you any info about Titleys or antie Renes family ??
Have not seen the Appletons since I went to secondary school, but I will try to track them down.As regards Len`s daughters I will also try and track them down, but it`s not easy if they are married with a different surname.
Anyway keep up the good work......

Kind regards

Philip

I am a descendant of Jacob Halfacre who settled in
Newberry, South Carolina around 1766. He later moved to Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee. The family cemetery is still visible on Arno Road in
the Franklin area. There are relatives in my family
named "Mason" but I do not know about "Childress".
I have found Fredrick Married Elizabeth Ragle whose father was Jacob who married a Susanna Ritchey on 27 Jan 1803, in Washington, Virginia. That is the only name of Ritchey I have in the Halfacre line. Could be connected
somehow. If I find more Info. I will let you know.

I have had contact with people in Tennessee that deny this, but have not worked on this project recently. Would you like to share any info? I am willing to help you. Thanks. Emily

Hello Gillian...
Nice to hear from you.I do remember a Gillian but cannot place your face. There are very few relatives I have managed to trace down. Uncle Lens family is almost hopeless to trace unless you know of there whereabouts ??
Otherwise I visit my sisters Marg and Eileen a couple of times a year. I really would be pleased if you could help me out any family you know of. And it is nice to know I have a cousin I hope to see in the future.

All the best
Philip

Re: Halfacre Line in IL

Lisa & Bonnie,
I am also researching the Halfacres of Marion Co., IL. Here's the reason why. Mrs. Mary Ella Ritchie married someone named Halfaker/Halfacre about 1904. She was born in 1848, so whoever she married was probably born around 1850. By 1910, he was either dead, or they had separated. She is in the 1910 census of Madison Co., IL in Nameoki Township with her son, Al Ritchie. Al Ritchie was my Step-grandfather.

In order to find out exacty who her Halfaker husband was, we are looking for that surname in Madison County, IL. I found two. Sam Halfaker in 1910 Granite City, Madison, IL and Charles E. Halfaker in 1920 Venice, Madison, IL. I have been able to connect Charles to where he lived previously. He was in Bourbon, Crawford, MO in 1910, and before that he was in Marion Co.,IL. Charles E. was born abt. 1881 in IL, but his kids were all born in MO.

I don't know who Charles' parents were yet, but I feel I'm getting close! Do you know if any of the Halfacre men in your family married late in life to someone named Mary Ella Claymore Ritchie? Only Granville and Orin seem to be old enough. But maybe there is another one I have missed?

Thanks for any help you can give us! Azbrenda@aol.com/

Hi Tere,

My name is Jill Cooper Childress, and I am researching the Surber Family. Coleman Surber was a brother to my 3rd ggrandfather. I have been to Brownsburg Cemetary , in Indiana several times, and have pictures of Coleman and Mary's headstone. I believe they had at least one child. A son named Noble ( I'm sorry, I don't have the dates for him available right now, but will check my files, ) He is also buried in the same row, right beside them as is an Esther Surber ( I have pics of both headstones). I do know that there are other halfacres buried there as well
I hope this helps,
Jill

Hello Philip,
Your sister Eileen has a friend who has done a lot of the Halfacre and Wild research. Perhaps she will let you have a copy. I believe it goes back to about 1800 with Robert Halfacre. My brother Roy died last year and my parents were Marjorie and Fred and we lived in May Street. Uncle Len died a few years ago and he had 3 daughters. Eileen (died a few years ago) Joan and Linda who I believe live in Dorset. Jean Halfacre (Uncle Ted and Girlie's) daughter is now 70 and unmarried. Auntie Olive had Ann (she is also dead) Mary and Graham. I haven't seen the Appleton boys for sometime now. Auntie Doll's son Alan lives not far from me and I very often see him. His brother Ron died in the war and Den died a few years ago. I keep in touch with Jean Halfacre and am probably due to phone her soon. My brother Roy had one child a daughter Lisa who died nearly 5 years ago. I have 1 daughter who also has a daughter. Hope this helps with more recent members of the family. Not sure if I've missed anyone out.
Kind regards,
Gillian
