Hi Kathe:

Just saw your message as I've only recently gotten back into genealogy.

My dad was born in the Powellsville area of Scioto County, but I was born and still live in Upstate NY. I'm willing to share any info. on the Shoemaker line that I have. My email has changed since this initial posting to nrschneider@nycap.rr.com.

With respect to Rachel HALFHILL, I believe she was born in Lancaster County, PA about 1780 and died on 2AUG 1872 in Cheshire Twp. Gallia County, Ohio. Her father's name was Samuel HALFHILL and her mother's maiden name was Rowley or Rowlier.

In an 1851 alimony suit in Gallia County Common Pleas Court, Rachel sued her husband George citing cruelty. She said that she and George had moved from PA to the French Grant (Scioto County, OH) in 1814, and to Gallia County, OH, in 1832 or 33. Son Peter stated that the couple moved from Lancaster, PA, to Scioto County in 1808, and to Gallia County in 1837. There are 3 land transactions recorded in the Scioto Courthouse for George Shoemaker in 1823, 1826, & 1828.

Rachel is likely related to Anna HALFHILL, who married Pleasant THOMAS and lived next door to them according to the 1850 census.
