James Halk or Halks

I'm looking for information on James Halk, sometimes spelled Hawk or Hawks in the older records. He seems to have preferred Halk. James was probably born about 1756 or so, maybe in VA. He lived in NC and SC also, and his daughter Sarah married Enoch Reece of Haywood County, NC. James died about 1820 in SC. He was married to Rachel Thompson. After his death, Rachel married a Curry.
Thank you for any information.
Maggie

Juli,
Issac Halk and wife Mary, along with C. M. Halk and wife Julia, daughter Lillian (?) and son, C. A. are listed in 1876 in Missouri. Madison County in Fredricktown. Look under Isaac Halk in MO, the MO state census of 1876, image 22 of 81. Side note, I found the family in Shelby Co., TN in the 1850 census, not yet in AR.
Marsha

Hi Mary. As far as I can tell the only children Isaac Halk had were Cassius and Mary. He was already about 27 years old when Cassius was born, so it's possible he was married before. But if he had children they either died young or perhaps were raised by grandparents as they never show up with Isaac and Polly. I've not found Issac prior to the 1850 census, though, so I don't know for certain.

I wish I could have been more help!

Do you have any other information on Isaac Halk as other children he may have had. I am looking for a connection to him. Isaac is listed at the head of my family tree, however I cannot make the connection completely with him. Names of his sons would be of great help. Mary Halk

Cassius M. HALK, b. 1848, s/o Issac HALK & Mary WAITS

Looking to make contact with anyone researching Cassius M. HALK. He was born about 1848 in Mississippi to Issac HALK - b. abt 1821 Alabama - & Mary WAITS. (This was Mary's second marriage, her first was to Lilburn BARNES.) Mary was born about 1813 in Georgia. Her parents were John B. WAITS and Mariam CYEMPKA.

Cassius was enumerated on the 1850 census for Hot Spring County, Arkansas with his parents, his BARNES step-siblings and an infant sister named Mary. The baby apparently did not survive infancy as she was not listed on the census for 1860.

The family was still in Hot Spring County in 1860. Isaac was listed as a carpenter, his step-son William BARNES was a wagonmaker and step-daughter Arvazena BARNES was a schoolteacher.

Cassius later followed Arvazena into teaching, because in 1870 (still in Hot Spring County) he was listed as School Master. Isaac was running a hotel where he, Mary and Cassius lived. Also living there was Mary's daughter, Talitha BARNES and her husband, Allen YARBROUGH and their children.

I've totally lost the family after 1870. I have heard that Mary WAITS BARNES HALK was alive in 1880 and is buried in Craighead County, Arkansas, but I cannot find evidence of this. Mary's eldest daughter, Mary Jane, was living in Ozark County, Missouri with her husband and family. But as for the rest of the family, they seem to have disappeared.

I have a photo of Mary WAITS BARNES HALK and will be happy to share info!

Welcome to the Halk message board

My great grandmother was Zola Catherine Halk, she was born February 25, 1888, she married Isaac Lincoln Jones in 1908 in Arkansas and they had 15 children with 8 of them living into adulthood. Her father was George W. Halk born July 18, 1853 in Arkansas, he is buried in Halk Cemetery, Cherry Valley, Cross County, Arkansas. George W. Halk married Anna Evaneline McCall who passed away after having their second child, Ruth Annie Halk who was born December 21, 1889. The girls were mostly raised in a Catholic Girls School or Orphanage in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. I have been told by a relative that this girls school is still in existence in Memphis but I have been unable to find any information on it online.
George W. Halk married again to Mattie Riley and they had 3 children Myrtle, Fay and Leo F. Halk who was born February 28, 1897. We have lost track of the families of these children and would like to get back in touch with them if anyone has any information on these families.
I think that Mattie Riley Halk went on to marry a man named Clampitt or Clampit and had at least one more child according to census records.
