Frederick Hayward Hallett

My Grandfather was Frederick Hayward Hallett from Bristol UK. He married my Grandmother, Lillian Stella Cooper in East London, South Africa in 1920. He died two years later in Durban of a heart attack. We were told that he had been sent out to South Africa by 'The Bank' (Standard? Barclays?) because he had been gassed during WW1. I know that he was older than Lillian by at least 10 years, so his birth date may have been between 1870 and 1890 (hers was in 1895 (11th September).
I would appreciate any further information about Frederick.
His daughter (my Mother) told me that his sisters in Bristol had offered to host her for further education in England, but the War intervened.
Thanks,
Mike K.

Hi Carol....I saw an old posting of yours for the Hallett family in Sylvania, Ohio today (from june of 2000). it has been a very long time since we last shared information. First question....did you send your Hallett family info to Polly at the Sylvania Historical society? Were you able to expand on the Hallett line over the the last 9 years or so? If you sent Hallett Frontier Days photos and Benton Family reunion photos to Polly, I want to thank you because I found a photo containing an image of my Queenan great grandparents. Do you have William and Malvina Hallett in your file? William and Malvina Hallett are my 3rd great grandparents Their daughter Jane married Married Hiram Hollister of Sylvania on 27 Oct 1859. One of their daughters, Nellie, married John T. Queenan.....and one of their daughters, Mary Helen was my grandmother.

Sorry--I have been on a short holiday and just got back.

My Hallitt line--and also, as you note, Taylor (maybe even double Taylors...it's not clear)--has a maternal line of Halkyards. We are connected to Mally Halkyard, one of three sisters born in the late 1700's, who also had a brother, Joel, who was a steward of an estate and had a son who greatly disappointed him. This is all I know--it's in something written by my great grandfather about a hundred years ago. I would be happy to share this little document with anyone interested in these names--another name is Thulas/Thewlas and another is Schofield. And all spelling variations.

Peace--

Judy Buck-Glenn

I would love to do something with that name, yes--though I am not sure how much help I could possibly be, from Philadelphia, PA. I have a reminiscence written by my great, great grandfather, William Hallett--entitled "Great-Grandfathers" and aimed at some child or grandchild, so that he traces both maternal and paternal lines. The Halkyard ancestors are named, but I have not had much luck tracing them. William Hallett's somewhat idiosyncraic account has proved accurate in many respects--I have managed to make connections with Thewlas/Thewles/Theulas "cousins", for instance--though I find it impossible to sort out what he means regarding what appears to be either one or two lines of Taylors and have just had to guess. But he does give some information about Halkyards--not enough, and I have just guestimated dates on my family tree. The only male Halkyard he mentions is a Joel--who had a wayward son whose name he did NOT record. But he does say Joel was a steward for a man of some property.

Anyway, it's a starting point. Anyone who is interested in reading this is welcome to contact me with their email address--and I will email a copy of William Hallettt's "Great-Grandfathers".

Judy

Most of what you mention is on line at Ancestry.com. The only missing link is proof of the linkage of Moses 1 to Moses 2. Moses 2 seems to be validated by the 1820 census as there is one male child in the home under 5 years old. That Moses 1 is the preson being counted is assumed as his household is counted just before his mother's

Descendants of Nathan Hallet

1 Nathan Hallet	b: 03 Jun 1750 in Westchester, New York, USA d: Dec 1820 in Canisteo, Steuben, New York, USA
.. +Hulda Olive Van Tassel	b: 1752 in Westchester, New York, USA	m: 28 Oct 1783 in First Church, Goshen, New York, USA	d: 05 Dec 1828 in Canisteo, Steuben, New York, USA
........	2 John Hallett	b: 02 Aug 1784 in Westchester, New York, USA d: 12 Dec 1847 in Cameron, New York, USA
............ +Amy Taylor	b: 26 Jan 1790 in Forty Fort, Pennsylvania, USA	m: 05 Oct 1805 in Canisteo, New York, USA	d: 19 Apr 1858 in Cameron, New York, USA
...................	3 Hulda Hallett	b: 02 Aug 1806 d: 24 Feb 1879
...................	3 Nathan Hallett	b: 12 Dec 1807 in Caneron, New York, USA d: 10 Feb 1898
....................... +Maria Clark	b: 03 May 1818 in Canada	m: 15 Jun 1836	d: 23 Jun 1896 in Cameron, New York, USA
.............................	4 William Hallett	b: 22 Jul 1841 in Cameron, New York, USA d: 20 Oct 1888 in Cameron, New York, USA
.............................	4 Adeline Hallett	b: 1847 in Steuben, Colorado, USA d: 1915
.............................	4 John C Hallett	b: 22 Sep 1837 in Steuben d: 03 Jul 1927
.............................	4 Fanny J Hallett	b: 1849 in Steuben, Colorado, USA
.............................	4 Martin Hallett	b: 1841 in Steuben, Colorado, USA d: in Army Civil War
.............................	4 Elizabeth Hallett	b: 1845
.............................	4 Nathan B Hallett
.............................	4 Clementine Hallett
.............................	4 Josephine Hallett
.............................	4 Hiram Hallett
...................	3 Henry Hallett	b: 11 Jul 1809 in Canisteo, New York, USA
...................	3 Rebecka Hallett	b: 21 Feb 1810
...................	3 Theodore Hallett	b: 25 Dec 1812 d: 22 Feb 1887 in Zumbrota, Minnesota, USA
...................	3 Sylvester Hallett	b: 06 Nov 1814 in Cameron, New York, USA
...................	3 Harriet Hallett	b: 27 Jun 1816
...................	3 Isaac Hallett	b: 29 Oct 1818 d: 1891
...................	3 Nancy Hallett	b: 30 Oct 1820 d: 30 May 1836
...................	3 Mary Hallett	b: 20 Dec 1822 in Cameron, Steuben, New York, USA d: 01 Dec 1908 in Canisteo, Steuben, New York, USA
...................	3 Amy N Hallett	b: 29 Apr 1825 d: 01 Jun 1879 in Bath, New York, USA
...................	3 Clarissa Hallett	b: 21 Feb 1828 in Cameron, Steuben, New York, USA d: 12 Jan 1908
...................	3 Fannie R Hallett	b: 20 Mar 1831
...................	3 Maria Hallett	b: 27 May 1833 d: 12 Dec 1889 in Cameron, New York, USA
........	2 Nathan B.
I do have a subscription to Ancestry.com, which is the source of most census data. The 1855 NY state census is not generally on line, but major portions of the Steuben County portion is at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nysteube/

As to what happened to the missing people my guess is death from a disease. That the fathers of both Hiram's have disappeared by 1860 census time is at best unusual.
Thank you for your explanation Robin.
Briefly, my story, as I understand it, is as follows. John Hallett married Mary Wale in 1799 and had a number of children. Several died, one who didn't was Samuel born 1802. he married Fanny Wale, a cousin. They had several children one of whom was Elizabeth Hallett born in South Petherton in 1843.
The famliy moved to Cardiff in the 1850s and Elizabeth met and married Andrew Shean an Anglo Welshman. He changed the spelling of his surname to Sheen. They had several children the youngest was my grandfather Gilbert Sheen born 1881.
The family migrated to Australia in 1949.
I would be glad of information about the background of Hallett or Wale. You say you can go back to the 17th century, that would be most interesting.
My wife and I will be in the UK in May and plan to call in South Petherton to check out the ancestors.
Regards
Julian Sheen

You may have since been told that Mary Hallett's parents were Joel Wale and Ann Meacham of South Petherton. They were married on 16th April 1775. Have you got any further? John and Mary were my gggrandparents.

Depends where you found them on Ancestry -- in a public tree, private tree or Ancestry One World Tree; if the latter, there is an option to make changes to the tree.

Hi,
sorry to say i dont think this is the same folks. Interesting that they used names William George and Lily though. Families seem to have kept reusing he same group of names.
I am fairly sure my George never was a merchant seaman. I have recently discovered he married a Lily Redgwell.
Hope you have lots of fun finding your folks, all the best for the new year
Elizabeth

Thanks for the info.
You said your mother's aunt on her father's side of the tree, Mary J. Tweddle, married Fredrick L. Hallett son of Hiram and Annie Laurie Bowman. My brother has a vey old book/diary/bible with handwritten comments. Handwritten portion records birth and death of Annie Laurie Bowmans Sept 1 and 3, 1876. My brother has a picture of Fredrick L. Hallet and Mary Jean Tweddle's daughter Nellie Rea Hallett (writing on back of picture identifies her as such). If you wish, we can attempt to email you this photo.
My oldest sister said my Mom told her that Hattie was born in Sandusky, Ohio in 1872 and died 1950 in Chaplin, Sk. cemetery, along with Tacy, Hiram Jr. Hiram Sr. and Jessie. My Mom and sister visited the grave sites and took pictures of the above mentioned headstones there.
Here is what I've discovered a couple of days ago on the LDS family genealogy website:
Hiram's (b1843) father was Moses Hallet b1818, Canisteo NY and married Louisa Hallet (b1820) - their children: Hiram, Elizabeth, and Cythnia.

Moses' father was Moses Hallet (b1796, Canisteo River Valley, NY) who married Nancy Fulton (b1800, Nova Scotia) in 1817. Their children were: Moses (b1818), Thomas (b1829), John (b1833), Nancy (b1835), James (b1840), Sarah (b1847). [I didn't see an Andrew or a Samuel.]

Moses (b1796) was Samuel Nathan Hallet (born June 3, 1750, Orange NY, died June 17, 1817, and married Huldah Van Tassel (b1752, NY) on Oct28, 1783. Their children: John (b Aug2,1784), Samuel Nathan Jr. (b1786), Abigail (b1788), Elijah (b1790), Isaac (b May 8,1796), Moses (b May 8, 1796 - yes, twins), Mary (b June 1799), James (b May24, 1800). All born in Steuben County, NY. Samuel Nathan would be my great great great great grandfather. I can't find his father but Huldah Van Tassell's ancestry is easily traced back into the 14th century through her father Theodorus Van Tassel and mother Maritje Boen > his father Jacob Van Tassel and Mother Aeltie Storm and his father Jan Corneilius Van Texel and mother Annetje Alberts, and his father Cornelisu Jensen VAn Texel and mother Catoneras ( who apparently was a Montauk Indian princess from the east end of Long Island, NY. If you google the VanTassell line from the Isle of Texel, Holland, it has lots of details and apparently goes back to Gov William Bradford, King Charlemagne, French and English Kings, Julius Caesar and more.
I know, it blew me away too. Anyway, use your sources and see if you can confirm Moses the 1st and Samuel Nathan Hallet's family.

I'm curious. Where/how do you access US Census? Do you pay for access from specific genealogy sites? I've never seen the 1855 Census. Do you subscribe to ancestry.com or LDS sites? I'm just wondering as I'm always looking for ways to gather better information.
At this point, do you suppose some mishap - death, sickness - or maybe divorce occurred? What's your thoughts on the years 1855-1860?

From research on here, I think her real name was Mehitable Knowles, but I'm not sure who her parents were. I think she grew up in Orleans, MA. She and Sam Bellamy never really did have any children.. she had one while he was out to sea but the baby died because she was trying to hide the baby in the barn under straw so nobody would know she had a baby out of wedlock. I think she was married to John Hallett for a short time and it didnt work out. According to legend, Maria was put in jail after the baby was found and escaped and hid in the dunes overlooking the ocean in Eastham, built a shack, and waited for Sam to come home. She woke up one morning to find dead pirates all over the beach, but nobody is really sure if she found Sam Bellamy. According to legend, he may have died, he may have lived with her for a while in the dunes, but nobody is all to sure!! Its a very interesting story, and there are so many different endings. Supposedly they walk together in spirit in the dunes of eastham and haunt the place!!! So, that is what I know for now. I know somebody who lives in her house in Orleans, with the last name of Knowles, but havent been able to get much information from her about it!!

Sorry Julian but 'wadges' is my slang for a 'lots of 'rather than an esoteric Hallett monument !! Many thanks for the reference to Ann Meacham being Joel's wife. Is that the Joel who was buried on 27th April 1831 ?
Both John and his brother Samuel were arguably the illegitimate children of a Susannah Hallett (unmarried mother ) from Merriott; Baptisms recorded in Parish Register as 9th August 1772 and 6th October 1778 as ''BC''.
That lineage can be traced to 1662.
But who are you?
Cheers, Robin Hallett
