Greetings cousin,
Henry Halley (1786-1853) was indeed the father of George Halley (1822-1903) who married Maria Ann Surber. These were the parents of your John Pressley Halley. Years ago I had correspondence with another of your your great-aunts, Ada Halley Brown, who gave me some interesting family history. Likewise, she knew little of the Halleys since her family left Missouri when she was very young. Please check out my family tree on Ancestry for more detail and don't hesitate to e-mail for any information.
Thanks,
Steve Halley

Just some general Hally info. My Hally/Halley/Hawley
family left Ardfinnan Tipperary area in several groups between 1828-1851 they went via Waterford- Newfoundland- then US, which was the common route at the time. Primary names in my family were James, Edward, Thomas, Patrick. Most of the Hallys reused the same first names over and over and followed the Irish naming patterns for about one generation after leaving Ireland. The majority of Hallys came from Tipperary or Waterford along the River Suir area.

Dan Hawley

Kim,
I don't know if we've ever corresponded before, but it certainly sounds like we're cousins. My great-great grandfather was William C. Halley (1841-1879) of Macon County, Missouri. If you visit my tree on Ancestry, you will find a picture of him as well as his parents Richard Simpson and Mary (Smith) Halley. There is also quite a bit of history on Henry (1786-1853).
Please reply if I can be of any further assistance.
Regards,
Steve Halley

Hello-
I would like to show you a copy of an email I sent to Ancestry.com member Donna Renkert:

Hello Donna-
I do think we are related, but it goes back pretty far, I believe. Here is what I know about my family:
By the way, my name is Paul Halley and I live in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
My father is John Halley, Jr. and his father was John Thomas Halley, Sr.; born in 1900 in Springfield, Mass. His father was Edward Halley, born in Topsail, Newfoundland in 1871; and his mother, we think, was born Miss Neville, daughter of Gregory Neville of Topsail. (my grandfather is listed as Gregory Neville's grandson in his will.) They emigrated to the U.S. in 1898, and we think that my great-grandmother may have died in childbirth.
I have found a WWI Canadian registration card which I believe is that of my great-grandfather Edward. He lists his father as James Halley of Topsail. There is a record of a James and an Edward "Hally" working on a roads project in Topsail back in 1847-48, alongside Gregory Neville, who we suspect of being my ancestor. I think that James is my ancestor and Edward "Hally" may be your ancestor.
Do you have any information which would corroborate this? I look forward to hearing from you.

Paul Halley

She responded to me and said that she thought you had some of the same names in your research. I would love to hear what you have learned.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hello-
I see that this post is nearly 9 years old, but there is a chance that you may still be out there...
My surname is Halley, and my ancestors emigrated from Topsail, Newfoundland. My great-grandfather was Edward Halley, but I don't think that it is the same Edward Halley who is your grandfather. It is likely that they were cousins or second-cousins. My grandfather (John Thomas Halley) was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1900. His father, Edward, was possibly born in 1871 in Topsail. His mother, we believe, may have died in childbirth. Her maiden name was possibly Neville, daughter of Gregory Neville of Topsail.
Any info you might have will be welcome; and I will be happy to share any info I have which may interest you.

Re: James W. Halley of Carroll Co., MS and Drew Co., AR

Do you have an individual nicknamed James "Jim" Haley in your line. The family line seems to come from TN to MS. Nancy Haley married Jim Haley and they had several children that I know of at this time. The children were William Carroll Haley born July 1855 reportedly in TN and died in 1934 in Dermont, Chico County, AR; John William Haley born March 1861 in TN died 1917 in Carroll County, MS and a daughter, Mary Haley born about 1862 in TN and died after 1870. Nancy died in 1896 in AR, she was born in 1829 reportedly in TN. Jim was born about 1827 in North Carolina and died before 1870. Nancy and the children are listed on the 1870 Oktibehha County, MS Census with Thomas Williams whom Nancy married in 1869.

Several families lived in and around Monticello, AR. and some are still living in the area.

There is a marriage license for a James Haley and Nancy Haley March 15, 1860 in Dickson County, TN. This same year on the census, James and Nancy were listed with a child, William C Haley age 5. Before 1865, there was a newspaper article that listed James Haley as being deceased due to falling in the river when a train was coming across the bridge. I can't tie any of these together with our line at this time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Barbara,
Rodney Halley here. Read in an earlier post tonight that my Halley's may have changed their name from Holley to Halley sometime in the 1800's; no idea why.

My branch is from Union and Richland Parishes in Louisiana and there is a small settlement in Southeast Arkansas by the name Halley that was previously known as Bowie or Bouie (named for Jim Bowie's brother).

There is a small Baptist church there with graveyard and there is a Judge Halley (an actual bench sitting judge) buried there.

Not sure if this helps or not but seems funny that people in our lineage would change the spelling of their name. I've heard my dad say that he heard all the Halley's, Holley's, and Hawley's are related.

Sincerely,
Rodney Halley

RE the Louisiana Halley's, one of the related names in one of the threads was given as Alsobrooks, however the correct spelling is "Alsbrooks". There were also some Halley's from Ouachita City, which was/is just across the river from Sterlington, La. Thanks to everyone who has provided information on these people.
I can't say why my part of the family is Halley but I picked up a thread earlier this evening and found that an ancestor of mine changed his spelling from Holley to Halley in the mid 1800's. Of course, my father said he heard all the Halley's and Holley's are all kind to one another. I understand that my great grandfather was Jesse James Halley and it seems I may remember seeing the name of his wife listed on some papers.

Jesse James Halley had three sons by one marriage (Charles, Dee, and Brice---in no particular order) and another son (Bill) by a second marriage.

I believe they were from Union Parrish in North Louisiana and the towns which I've heard mention in connection with these Halley's are Ouachita City (across the river from Sterlington, La.) and Nip and Tuck, La. (not on any map but was somewhere between Haile, La. and Spencer, La.

Bryce Halley (aka A.B.) is buried at Start, La. where he resided for many years and was in the grocery business there in Start, on U.S. HWY 80.
Lester Hawley and Nancy Harris of Perry County, Indiana

I am unable to locate parents for Lester Hawley born abt 1800 either in Vermont or Connecticut. I believe he died between 1850 and 1860. I believe that his wife, Nancy Harris either died also, or was unable to care for their small children after his death. I based this on the fact that two of their small children are living, seemingly as orphans, in a household other than their parents or siblings on the 1860 Perry County, Indiana census records.
---------------------
Lester Hawley purchased land in Perry County, Indiana on three dates, that I could find:

7 NOV 1837
NENW Sec/Blk 24 TWP 4-S Range 1-W Fract/Sec No Meridian 2nd PM

1 AUG 1839
NWNE Sec/Blk 24 TWP 4-S Range 1-W Fract/Sec No Meridian 2nd PM

10 APR 1849
SWSW Sec/Blk 13 TWP 4-S Range 1-W Fract/Sec No Meridian 2nd PM

-----------------------
I found Lester on only 3 census records
1830 in Crawford County, Indiana
1840 in Perry County, Indiana shows two children under 5
1850 in Perry County, Indiana shows all the children, and indicates Vermont as Lester's birth place.

I found Margaret L and William H Hawley on the 1870 census in Perry County on which they indicate a Connecticut birthplace for their father. This is where I may go wrong, I'm assuming that these are the same Margaret L and William H that were found in Perry County on the 1850 census.

Now, correct me if I have any mistakes. I made some assumptions based on location and timing. Some of these records were pulled from seemingly unattached family trees. I need help verifying this information.

I.
