George Anthony HALSTEAD born Clitheroe Lancashire 1871

I am looking for information about my Great Grandfather George Anthony HALSTEAD born in Clitheroe Lancashire in 1871 He was Married to Mary Jane Candlish their children were Ellen, Margaret Ann (my grandmother), cecil, Alexander, Richard, William and Lilly, and they lived in Lytham. I have found him on the 1881 Census listed as George Alstead aged 9,With a brother Richard Alstead aged 6, and Mother listed as Helen Alstead 41 born in Pimlico, also on the 1891 Census listed as George HALSTEAD aged 19, with Richard HALSTEAD aged 16 and Ellen HALSTEAD aged 50, as You can see Their surname is spelt differently also the mothers name is different at each census but I believe that often the enumerator wrote down what he heard and if someone couldn't read then they couldn't correct the entry. I have no information as to the father.

Are you a halstead with connections to Clitheroe?
Do you have a George Anthony in your tree?
Do you have any information?

If so please get in touch soon

Many thanks

Colleen Sutcliffe Nee Dean

I'm missing a link or two. Isaac Halstead (born Oyster Bay @1821) moved to Jersey City before 1860. His father was James Halstead, married to Maria, born @ 1800 in Oyster Bay, who had 3 other children in that marriage - Treadwell, Mary and Ann. What I have not been able to do is link with one of the other Halstead's born in Oyster Bay, which would eventually lead to Jonas Halstead born in @1673. Can someone help with the link up? Trying to give this genealogy to my father on his 85th birthday (July 31, 2007) so I am desperate!

Pat

Looking for information. Isaac born @ 1821 in NY; was a boatman in 1860 census(Oyster Bay). Rachael was from England, born @ 1822. Had 2 children in NY - Thomas K (born 1843) and Hannah (born 1847). Isaac and Rachael show up in 1860 US Census in 1860. Moved to Jersey City, NJ before 1860 because Charles C was born in NJ 1860, Estelle 1861 and Flora 1862. Big gap in births makes me wonder if Rachael was actually first wife. Does anyone have information on this Isaac from NY who moved to NJ? Estelle Halstead married by great grandfather, Joseph Henry Jones, who was born in NYC @ 1859.

Thanks!

Daniel or David Healstead and Patience Barnes

I've seen several charts listing David Halstead Sr. as husband of Patience Barnes (1711-1801), dau of Joshua Barnes. I have seen a transcription of Joshua Barnes' Will in which he says his daughter Patience is married to Daniel Halstead. Does anyone know if the transcription of the Will maybe is in error or are the various charts listing David as her husband in error? Or was his name Daniel David? I'd like to record her married to the right fellow and tend to go with Joshua's Will but I haven't seen an original.

When was Ada Halstead born?

Lancs Certificate Centre has just informed me that the Ada Halstead born 1877 in Burnley (Vol 8e Page 270 Mar Qtr) is not my grandmother Ada, as the father's name is incorrect. Another Ada Halstead has now appeared on the FreeBMD in Dec Qtr 1876 Burnley. Does anyone have access to both these records to check the father's name, please? I do not know and would love to know her mother's name. From her marriage cert, Ada's father is John Higson Halstead, with whom she appears on the 1881 census. By 1891 she has been "adopted" by James and Olive Atkinson, but has retained her surname, and in 1901 she is living with her husband Alfred Fairey and his family. She was married in Sept 1896 and gave her age as 19.

Looking for an ancestor

I am looking for my 2nd great grandmother Mary C Shedd who married Irving Halsted (b. 1850 in NY). Mary was born July 1872 in Poughkeepsie, NY and married her husband in Feb 1892 in Poughkeepsie, NY. Mary's parents were Oliver Shedd and Elizabeth Crandell. Irving's parents were Neamiah (b. 1805 in NY) and Julia Sharpsteen (b. 1819). Mary lived in New York and maybe New Jersey. Mary and Irving had several children including Donald, Elizabeth, Slagle, and Nanette. I know she died some time after 1934. I am looking for anything related to her death - obituary, death certificate, etc.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I have Mary's husband's obituary (from Poughkeepsie, NY in 1933) that mentions her but cannot find her otherwise.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Joe Finelli

Higsons and Halsteads - re. Ada HALSTEAD (Burnley, Lancashire)

Hi There

I have been unable to post a response to your message on another site due to a technicality. We are 3rd cousins once removed. I am descended from Ruth HALSTEAD's brother, Bannister and have been long trying to contact Burnley HALSTEAD relatives in order to share information.

Please respond to this site - not to my email address - if you'd like to speak further.

Regards

Jonathan

"Seeking information about my grandmother Ada Halstead, born Burnley 1877. On her marriage cert her father's name is given as John Higson Halstead, however in subsequent censuses he is just John Higson, son of Matthew. I believe she may have been born before her parents' marriage, and that her mother's name was Ruth Halstead. She was later brought up by her maternal aunt Olive Atkinson nee Halstead and her husband James Atkinson, and her father remarried and moved to Yorkshire. If anyone has information about Ada and her family, I would love to hear it."
Halstead in Ohio or Michigan

Hello!!

I am seeking information on a Ira B Halstead. I do not have his birthdate or death date. He married a Lillie C Allen on March 14, 1895
in Henry County, Ohio. Lillie was born about 1876 and died May 1901. Her parents are B. F. (Lewis) Allen and Jennie Bowers. According to her obituary she was 24 when she died and had 2 children, (no names listed), one was 3 years old and the other one was 2 weeks old.

Then I found an notice of death on a Mr. and Mrs. Halstead Feb 1902. They both died the same day of pneumonia, one in the morning and the other one in the evening. They were Ira B Halsteads parents. They died in their home in Pine Creek, Michigan. Does any of this sound familiar?? I am hoping someone will be able to help or make a connection to them.

Mike

Halsteads in Delaware County, Indiana
I have sort of hit a brick wall with my research. Part of it is my fault, part of it not. :) Here is what I have, starting with my grandfather and going backwards.

Grover Cleveland Halstead b. 28Aug1888 in Delaware Co., IN
Son of

Cornelius Halstead b. 10Nov1857 in Delaware Co., IN
Son of

<John> Samuel Halstead b. 1836 in IN d. 22Mar1890

There's where I hit my brick wall. Kinda.

Census reports always report <John> Samuel as just Samuel Halstead. The first name of John is only seen on his death certificate and his tombstone, as far as I've been able to find. I *do* have his death certificate and, in the book where it is recorded, it does have a name listed as his father. Airhead that I am, I didn't write that name down when I got his death certificate, although I do remember it being a name that I had already decided wasn't his father. In the census reports, it is recorded that his mother was from Pennsylvania, his father from New York.

If anyone has any other information on <John> Samuel or would like any of the information that I've gathered, just post here.

Tracey

I am researching the Justus Halstead family of Oswego Co. NY. I have many Halstead pictures from this family line and from the son Sylvester (may have been known as Lester) Many of the people I have pics of, I am sure they tie into this line but, in many cases I do not know who they are or just how they fit in. I am looking for someone that may tie into this line that may want digital copies of some of these. I have a couple of pics of family gatherings that are full of Halsteads most likely taken in the Oswego area.

Elizabeth Halstead, b. NY 1794-5, spouse Martin Easterly, res. Huron Co, OH; poss. sister - Martha Halstead b NY 1807-1808

Evidence for Elizabeth's maiden name is still tenuous to my mind, and evidence that she had a sister, Martha, is even more tenuous, but suggestive.
I find Elizabeth in Fairfield Twp, Huron County, with presumed husband, Martin Easterly in the 1850 census, where she is born NY, age 55. Have not found either of the couple in 1860, either in the census or in burial records for the area. However, the unmarried daughters have dispersed to other households, indicating that Elizabeth and Martin may have died before 1860.
Before coming to Huron County, Ohio, the family appears to have been in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence Co, in western NY in the 1830 census. However, Martin's Easterlys have strong connections to Fulton (formerly part of Montgonmery) Co farther east. Martin's father's estate is settled there in 1861.
I suspect that Mrs. Martha H Gregory, found in Unadilla, Livingston Co, MI may be a sister to Elizabeth for the following reasons. In 1860, one of Elizabeth's daughters has moved to Unadilla and is living with Martha's family while teaching. In 1880, another of Elizabeth's daughters is there and is listed as a niece of the family. Martha and her husband, Philander Gregory, have a son named Halsted.
This message is long enough. Won't go into why I think Elizabeth is a Halstead. Will post that info in my database, "thefarm" at Rootsweb.com.
Does anyone else have info on one or both of these women?

Hello-

My name is Mark Combs and I am attempting to do
research on a small mining town named Whitby in West
Virginia.

In Whitby, there is a cemetery which has nothing but
Halsteads in it. My undertanding has been that Whitby
was a part of the Halstead farm and eventually was
purchased by the Beaver Coal Company and later leased.

Are you related to those Halsteads? IA.

The Iowa Cemetery Records state that Ray Wesley Halstead, born Sheldon (O'Brien Co.) IA 5 August 1888, died 31 Jan 1912 - so this must have been taken a year or two before his death.

If you are related to Ray Halstead, please email me at margerice@prodigy.net.
