Hi Kathleen: I admire your persistance...I am a little behind the eight-ball with your back/back replies...was out of town until early am, then got to my eamils and saw your postings, the most recent is this one about Isadore...
Yes, I have to admit I have been flustered a bit trying to find out more about this side (which would be my father's Maternal-Maternal side, [to use a euphamism])...my Ford research has been a bit better, but also ran into a brick wall with Isadores' husband,William, and his father, George Ford....all I know of George is that he came from New Jersey, and moved into the Orange Co. area later with his wife, Nancy McMillan [sp?], and had William and other brothers/sister...Williams' obit mentions Isadore Halsted/Halstead and a rough marriage date, and I also have a copy of Isadores' Death Record from Van Buren Co. here in Michigan, where she passed away. I hope your Aunt or someone in the family has some record somewhere back in time...I keep being concerned that items like these when time goes too far back may only reside in family bibles or records that may have been lost in time, and not in other geneological catches...hopefully, your Aunt or another relative has some info. or knows of someone who would have the information. I thank you again for you dilagence [sp?] and persistance in this...I have not heard from anyone in a while on the 'thread/lines', and your link and follow-ups have given me some hope in pursuing this line further. Keep me posted as to your relatives information, and if anything more surfaces...I am more than willing to share what I have on the lines in my possesstion. Thanks Kathleen, again, and talk to you soon.

PS: I noted you memtioned not only about seeing the Fords in Michigan, but also the Halsted's...I am curious as to where they settled...let me know when you have a chance. Take care.

James M.

Christine...thank you for your reply...just wanted to add that while Isadore (my Great-Aunt Dora Miller was named after here) was born in Orange Co., NY, it may be possible that our Halstead/Halsted family came from NJersey...her husband William Ford's father George (Ford) did come out of N Jersey himself, with his wife Nancy (McMillan) Ford...she may also have been known as Dora or some variation...let me know if you find anything further, and I really appreciate you getting back to me on this as you have. Take care. JAM

I am related to the Halstead (or other variations of that name) family by the marriage of Isadore Halstead to a WIlliam Ford. Isadore died in Van Buren Co. (Bangor, MI) in 1881. She was the daughter of B. J. Hastead and Mary (maiden name/unknown); which I culled from a Death Records page in Van Buren County. Isadore was born Orange Co. as was her husband, and married him there in 1851; she was born, give or take, in 1831.They later moved to Michigan, in various places in Van Buren Co. such as Lawton and Bangor, MI. They had several children...Alice (my great-grandmother Miller), Kate, Nancy, Charles, Stephen, and Effie.
I have come to a road block with getting past her parents, and where they/tbeir families came from. I would appreciate any and all help with this, as I think I have exhasted the basic ancestry resources for now. Please write with any and all comments or thoughts or information.
Thanks for your help in advance.

I have records of them married here in Queensland then moved to Victoria but don't know where they are from. I don't have a birth date for them but would have been born around the 1880's. Would appreciate any information if it is the same family.
Regards Robert Crocker

Bill, I found a county history book in Brookville and had a biography of Moses Riker who married Hetty Warne, sister of our Elizabeth Warne Halstead.
father
Elijah Warne, born Sept. 25, 1795, New Jersey and died aug 29, 1841, Franklin County, Indiana
mother
Amelia Henderickson born dec 18 1798, New Jersey and died oct 15, 1842, Franklin County, Indiana
I still have not found an obit for William M. Halsted; I spent about 5 hours a year ago in Sterling looking at old papers on microfilm.
The corrected death date for Elizabeth Warne Halsted is Sept. 11, 1904. The grave marker is in error. I finally found her obit in the newspaper, with the above date.
Also, Uncle Steve and Matilda Ulm did not have any children. Also, found a copy of his will in Sterling. I the Bertha you have attached to Uncle Steve belongs to Uncle Elijah and Martha Dir Halsted. Elizabeth "Beth" Halstead married John Rennce Brown Nov. 4, 1909, Whiteside County.
Please get in touch directly with me at:
forestsmith@cox.net

John, Thank you for the info on Elizabeth Halsted. Sorry I am so late in answering, but housework has been taking precedence over genealogy.
My grandfather was Harmon C. Edgette who married Elizabeth Halsted in 1890. I have information on him and a handwritten family tree for the Halsteads that goes from the 1700's until the 1950's. If you are interested, please let me know.
Again, thanks for the info. Art

Looking for an ancestor

I am looking for my 2nd great grandmother Mary C Shedd who married Irving Halsted (b. 1850 in NY). Mary was born July 1872 in Poughkeepsie, NY and married her husband in Feb 1892 in Poughkeepsie, NY. Mary's parents were Oliver Shedd and Elizabeth Crandell. Irving's parents were Neamiah (b. 1805 in NY) and Julia Sharpsteen (b. 1819). Mary lived in New York and maybe New Jersey. Mary and Irving had several children including Donald, Elizabeth, Slagle, and Nanette. I know she died some time after 1934. I am looking for anything related to her death - obituary, death certificate, etc.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I have Mary's husband's obituary (from Poughkeepsie, NY in 1933) that mentions her but cannot find her otherwise.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Joe Finelli

Halsteds in Oklahoma, Ohio, and Indiana

I am searching for the family of the wife of one William W. Halsted, born October 6, 1815, in Butler County, Ohio, probably Reily Twp.. Her maiden name was apparently Elizabeth Warren or Warne, and she was born 25 Jan 1820, possibly also in Ohio, but perhaps in Franklin County, Indiana. They (William and Elizabeth) left Indiana some time in the 1850's and moved to Whiteside County, IL, where they can be found in the 1860 census, along with family members.
I have tracked the extended family down into Beaver County, Oklahoma (the No man's land in the Panhandle), where they were in 1889 when the wife of one of the sons died during childbirth on July 29, 1889. Thereafter they moved to Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory in time for the Cheyenne-Arapaho run in April 1892, before William died about 1893.
After William's death, Elizabeth moved back to Illinois to reside with her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Halsted McCracken, in Whiteside County. Any assistance in learning who were the parents of Elizabeth Warren Halsted would be appreciated. Both of the Warrens were apparently born in New Jersey, but I don't know their birth names or dates .

Obit. HALSTED, RITA

HALSTED, RITA August 27, 1918 to Oct. 12, 2003 Born Rita Braido in Vassar, MI, Rita went to The Lord at her home in Rancho Bernardo, Calif. at the age of 85. She is survived by her loving husband, Mark Halsted; daughter, Pamela Halsted, her sister, Irene Rennpage, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son, Tom. Rita graduated from Vasser High School as class secretary with honors. She was one of the most talented public speakers of her time, and was frequently invited to speak at special events. Rita was also an outstanding debater on a Championship Team. Rita married her high school sweetheart, Mark Halsted, in 1939 and they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on September 2, 2003. During Rita ' s married life she and Mark were residents of Detroit, Mich., Chattanooga, Tenn., Allentown, Pa., London, England and retired in Rancho Bernardo, Calif. in 1979. Rita was active in community activities, especially those involving school children. For many years of her married life Rita traveled with Mark, Vice President of a major growing worldwide chemical company. This made it difficult to establish roots. She seldom complained about this problem as modern wives do. Her willingness to sacrifice without complaint made Mark ' s working life very rewarding. In spite of several years of serious health problems, Rita ' s retirement in the great city of Rancho Bernardo was very fulfilling. Rita, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, will be greatly missed. Services to be held on Wednesday, October 15, at 11 a.m. at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd. SD, Ca. Published in the San Diego Union-Tribune on 11/2/2003. (volunteer submision)
