There were several Christian Haltermans in the Shenandoal Valley. You need to attach bithdates to them to keep them straight. There was a Chritstian Haldeman abt. 1780, who was married to an Elizabeth Fout abt.1784. I have not researched their progeny. The above Cristian Haldeman was the son of Cristopher Haldeman abt.1741. He goes back to Christian Haldeman and Christanna Kneisley. My source is The Ancestors and Descendents of Christian Halterman of Hardy Co.,Va. now W.Va. by H. Gamble Grady

I too am a Halterman of direct decent from Christian Halteman and Christanna Kneissley. It's my understanding a group of the mennonites moved from Lancaster,Pa. and establised a settlement in the Shenandoah valley called Hawksbill near Brocks Gap,Va. There is an account of the Indian raid in a book titled "The Ancestors and Descendents of Christian Halterman of Hardy Co. Va. Now W.Va." by H. Gamle Grady. The book is quite extensive. Unfortunately there were only a few published. There is one at the Morman Library @ Salt Lake and one at public library of Hardy Co. in Moorefield, W.Va. I also have a copy.

Try this link: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10123672

My Mother was a Halterman and she had been contacted many years ago by someone doing research. He left her copies of several pages from two different books. Portions are paraphrased below.

The spelling of Christian's last name varies: Look for Holdeman, Haldeman, Halteman and Halterman.

Found references to Christian in two sources:
'History of Jackson County, Ohio' by Daniel Webster Williams
and 'History and Families of Jackson County'

The 'History of Jackson County, Ohio' by Daniel Webster Williams states that Christian sickened and died sometime prior to an attack by Shawnee Indians in the Fall of 1759. It portrayed Christina as a heroic widow determined to carry on. The article states that the attack occurred in the headwaters of a tributary of the Ohio River somewhere in southern Ohio.

The other book, 'History and Families of Jackson County', states that Christian was killed during the attack and that the attack occurred in August, 1758. This article places the attack as having taken place in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia.

In both articles his wife, Christina, was killed during the attack.

The 'History of Jackson County, Ohio' states that three little girls were killed and a baby. Three sons; Christopher, Jacob and Gabriel were captured and taken with the Shawnee. In October the band of Shawnee headed toward the Chillicothe area where the three boys were supposedly adopted into the Shawnee tribe.

Gabriel died that same winter. Christopher and Jacob were surrendered in a prisoner exchange 11/9/1764 at the forks of the Muskingum river with 204 other white prisoners.

------------------------------------------------------------

Between the two articles my best guess is that Christian (if he had not died of sickness prior), Christina, Maria Catrina Boin (Jacob Halterman Sr's wife) and Jacob Sr. were killed during the attack. The three boys captured by the Shawnee were Jacob Halterman Sr. sons. 'History and Families of Jackson County' makes no reference to the three little girls and the baby.

My dad told me once that one of my ancestors, George Halterman, fought with the french. he also told me that in my family history there are Blackfoot Indians, Black Hesians, ans Vickings. I however, am having trouble finding any actual information as to verify this information. Does anyone out there know anymore about my geneology or family history?

If anyone has any information about Halterman's they would like to share, I would be so interested. We have no idea where our people came from. All we know is that my great-grandfather "George Washington Halterman came from somewhere in Illinois to Missouri in the late 1800's. He supposedly had a brother named Arthur. It is believed that their parents died and they were either taken in or adopted at a very early age. Their parents were supposedly large landowners in the Lake Realfoot area of Tennessee.

Please contact me @ stacy.halterman@dss.mo.gov

Joanne -- Here is the information you requested. I have posted a picture of Montgomery Halterman and his wife, Martha Delawder on my family tree page. He was a son of Noah Halterman. She was part Cherokee as you can tell from the picture. They were my great grandparents.

The Haltermans were from Germany
1. Christian Halterman 1679-1764
w-Christina Kneissley 1681-1758

2. Jacob Halterman 1715-1758 (son of Christian & Christina)
w- Maria Catarina Boin 1720-1758.
Note: Christina and Maria were killed in an Indian Raid in 1758 at Brocks Gap, VA (somewhere between Broadway and Bergton, VA). Jacob and Maria had six children: Jacob, Jr., Christopher, Gabriel and three daughters. The three girls were killed, 2 were scalped along with their mother and grandmother. The youngest was slammed up against the house and killed. Jacob, Jr., Christian and Gabriel were taken captive. Gabriel died in captivity. Jacob, Jr. and Christopher were released 2-1/2 years later by the Indians.

3. Jacob Halterman, Jr. 1742 -?
w-Elizabeth Musselman 1750-1829

4. John Halterman 1789-1870
w-Susanna Wollord 1876-?

5. Noah Halterman 1816-1872
w-Mary Strawderman 1815-1880

6. Montgomery Washington Halterman 1855-1930 (my great grandfather)
w-Martha Catherine Delawder 1858-1943

Please let me know if this info. helps you any. If you have any pictures of the Halterman family, I would like copies.

Have a great day!
Claudia

David Otto and I are looking for the same Joseph & Elizabeth (Halterman) Mull. I am a descendant of Joseph's 2nd mariage 03 Feb 1849/50 to Elizabeth Halterman in Miami County, IN. Elizabeth's death certificate lists her father as George Halterman, VA. All census records say she was b. abt 1833-1835 in VA.

The 1830 VA census gives 1 George Halterman with daughters of that age range but later census records seem to show that this is not my Elizabeth.

There are 3 Georges in VA in 1840 -- two with daughters --
1840, Harrison County, VA ** A possibility.
Halterman, George (age 20-30 in 1830 b. 1810-1820)
Males - 1 under 5; 1 age 30-40
Females - 1 age 5-9 (1830-1835); 2 age 10-14 (1825-830); 1 age 20-30 Where is this George in 1850?

1840 Rockingham County, VA (See 1850 Rockingham & 1830 Pendleton
Holterman, George (20-30 in 1830)
Males - 2 age 5 -10; 1 age 10 - 15; 1 age 15 & under 20; 1 age 30 & under 40
Females - 1 under 5 (1835-1840); 1 age 5 & under 10 (1830-1835); 1 age 10 & under 15;
1 age 15 & under 20; 1 age 30 & under 40
* Neighbors: William & James Fitzwalters, John Mongold, Frederick Dove, Clayton Southerlin, Abel & Jacob Dove,

1850 District 56, Rockingham, VA - this is the 1840 Rockingham - George and the 1830 Pendleton Co, VA
Halterman, George age 56, b. abt 1794, VA (age 36 in 1830)
Elizabeth, age 50, b. abt 1800,
*Elizabeth, age 18 b. abt 1832, Idiot (age 0-5 in 1830) Not my Elizabeth Mull because mine is age 17 & already married to Joseph Mull by Feb 1850 and found on the 1850 Jefferson, Miami County, IN census of the same date.
Judith, age 14, b. abt 1836, probably the daughter under 5 in 1840 census.
*Next door to another George Halterman (likely his son), William Fitzwater Jr & Sr. , Dove, James Fitzwater, Adam Halterman,

Joseph and Elizabeth named their daughters, Rebecca (aka Margaretha/Maggie), Harriet, Nancy, Lerrie (aka Laura), Martha Elizabeth, and Amanda. Joseph had no known named or living sons from both marriages. They moved from Miami County, IN to Shawano and Langlade County, WI and both died there.

Deb Slager
Polo, IL

Aldelphia was a daughter of Benjamin Cottrell and Sarah Foster of Pike County, Ohio.

Someone posted him as being a son of Daniel Halterman and Elizabeth Glassburn but that probably is not correct because they were wed in Jackson County, Ohio on 4 Jan 1839 and Christian was married on the date above.

Based upon what I have Daniel Halterman and Christian Halterman may have been brothers or 1/2 brothers and sons of John Halterman of Pike and jackson County, Ohio

Re: Elijah Halterman

In 1880 in Madison, Richland Co., Illinois there is a family Elijah Halterman 30, his wife Symantha 29, daughter Florence 4, and daughter Lida 2.

This is likley the same Elijah Halterman who married Jane Bonner on 10 Aug 1872 in Clay Co. Illinois.

It is likely also the same Elijah Halterman who served during the Civil War in 136 Il Infantry, with pension records mentioning widow Jane Halterman and minor child Samantha J. Elliott. Pension claims filed in Nebraska.

My interest is in the daughter, Lida from the 1880 census. I am trying to determine if she is the same person as Lida L. Halterman, b. 29 Aug 1872 in IL, married Thaddeus A. Cochran (place not known), resided in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, and died (not at her place of residence) in Marnie, Cass Co., Iowa on 30 June 1898. She was only 19. They had one son, Raymond Wendel Cochran.

I don't have anything to link the Illinois 1880 Lida Halterman with the Iowa 1898 Lida (Halterman) Cochran at this point except that the birth year, birth place, and birth name match.

Any further information that might help me find (or not) a connection would be greatly appreciated!

Dixie Hansen

Sharon, to my knowledge my family line has no connection to the Palmyra, Iowa Haltermans. My line is through Highland (Pendleton) County, Virginia and Champaign County, Ohio. (And later Missouri where I was born.) I do know from a visit to Highland County several years ago that there is a Fleischer buried there in what I was told is the Halterman Cemetery. Sorry I didn't write down the first name. It is located in a field a few miles north of Monterey, VA. My ggg grandfather was Charles Halterman, a Hessian soldier who settled in Highland County after the Revolutionary War. Sorry I can't be of more help. Jack.

They filed wills then refilled fighting over who was going to care of their brother. George must of had more problems then just being blind? JH
Does anyone have any information on a REBECCA HALTERMAN, born about 1827 in Hardy County ? She marries JACOB CULLERS from Mathias in the 1840's. Jacob Cullers dies from wounds in the Civil War. She then remarries in 1866 in Hardy County WV to SOLOMON CRITES, also a widower. He was the son of Jacob and Mary Crites. Rebecca's mother is listed as ELIZABETH HALTERMAN on Rebecca's marriage record to Solomon Crites. No father is listed so, I assume Elizabeth must be a widow. Any help locating Rebecca's parents would be appreciated
George Halterman and Mary Waybright

George Halterman was the son of Adam Halterman of Pendleton county, VA, and was born about 1813. In 1832 he married Mary Waybright, who was born at about the same time as George was. I am descended from their son Ephraim. George moved his family to Illinois in the 1850s and to Missouri in the 1860s. I think that George died in the 1870s and Mary in the 1880s, but I don't know exactly when or where they died. The 1870 census listed George in Ray county, MO, and the 1880 census listed his widow in Fremont county, IA. Does anyone have more information on these two people?

Dale

Hi Barbara,

I am still doing work on Noah W. Halterman, I surmise that his parents are Christian and Adaline (your Delphi?),,

Look at the 1850 census (District 5 Barbour County) for Noah N Haldeman, the N looks like a W and he is listed at the right age for Noah W and is living with Christian and Adeline. Noah W cant be the son of Jacob and Mary Shireman because that Noah is older than Noah W.

I dont know who Christian's Father was nor Adeline's maiden name? do you?

I also read that some say that Noah was killed in the civil war but he was never enlisted in VA or WV, maybe he just left for Iowa during the Civil War?

When did Christian and Adeline move to Iowa?

Hope this helps, JIM

I took a look at the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census and believe you are correct in believing the Annie J. Currence living with the Herman Conrad family in 1880 is the daughter of Noah, based on the following information:

1870 census - WVA - Randolph - Clark - P.O. Valley Bend
HH#82
Currence, Laban B. - 25 - VA - farmer
, Edmona - 22 - VA
, Wm. L - 7 - VA
, Ida M. - 5 - VA
, Kent - 1 - VA
, Wm D. - 52 - VA - farmer
Halterman, Mary E. - 25 - VA
, Ann J - 6 - WVA
, Philadelphia - 1 - WVA

1880 - WVA - Randolph - Mingo - Dist#55
HH# 18
Currence, Wm D. - 53 - WVA - carpenter
, Mary E. - 40 - WVA - wife
, Delphia - 10 - WVA - daughter
, Lewis M. - 3 - WVA - son
HH#117
Conrad, Herman J. - 33 - WVA - farmer
, Mary - 27 - WVA - keeps house
, Louella - 5 - WVA - daughter
, Estella - 2 - WVA - daughter
Currence, Annie J. - 14 - WVA (other) - house keeping

Looks like Noah died about 1868-1869 because of "Delphia's" age in 1870 and the fact that she is listed as a Halterman in that census.

There are some age discrepancies, but that is not uncommon in census reports.

Hope this helps.
Barbara Chaffin
Jim,
I took a look at the census you mention - Sure do wish it could be that easy to make a connection - My Christian and Adelphia Halterman were both born in Ohio and moved to Iowa about 1849/1850. Christian and Delphia married about 1844 and their first child, John, was born about 1845.
As near as I can tell, Noah W. and his parents Christian and Ida (from a website by Sylvia Simmons), (or Emelia which is on the 1850 census image from Ancestry) were born in VA.
My Christian's parents, Daniel Halterman and Elizabeth Glassburn were also born in Ohio, so our Halterman/Haldeman's appear to be 2 separate lines, or possibly very distant cousins.
I do not have any Noah Halterman/Haldeman given names in my line (so far, anyway)!
I intend to continue to look for a connection to your VA Haldeman line. Please let me know if you find anything.
Barbara

Re: Noah and Carrie - it is certainly a possibility - too bad that wasn't one of the census reports when they asked how many times a person had been married. I would look for a divorce record, about 1869 or 1870, probably in West Virginia, for confirmation. It would explain why he moved to Iowa. I wonder where he was in 1870?

I haven't yet found a connection between Noah Halterman and my great uncle Otis Willis Halterman.....

Barbara

I have seen the Haldeman spelling in several places, also, and I have a Christian Halterman in my lineage files - just do not have a Noah listed as a child...

I am still looking for a connection between this line and my ancestors. Who do you have for a wife of your Christian? On my line, I have Adelphia (Delphia) as the first, then Sarah Cottrell. They were in Ohio, then Iowa...

My Halterman connect, a grandson of my Christian Halterman, was married at least 4 times...

Barbara

HALTERMAN - BRYNER WEDDING 1901

William Halterman and Miss Hattie Bryner, the latter's home being near Grand River, Ia., where her father is an extensive farmer and cattle raiser, were quietly married by the Rev. A.C. Hirst last evening at 1605 Howard street (Omaha) where the newly wedded couple will make their home until the spring. After the ceremony at 8:30 o'clock, which was witnessed by the most intimate friends of the contracting parties, a luncheon was served.
The groom, William Halterman, is one of the most popular officers in the city. Especially well is he known by the thousands of children who visit Hanscom park where, for the last nine years, he has kept them from falling into the lakes and assisted in their pastimes as one of the park policemen.

Omaha World-Herald Thurs Oct 17, 1901
