does anyone know anything about a family GILES in Icomb, variously spelt as Iccomb in Gloucestershire/Worcestershire. John Giles as well as Elisha Giles and William Giles were born there around 1795 -1805. Elisha and William Giles landed up in Lewknor Oxfordshire. my direct ancestor John Giles in Ashton Underhill.
Unfortunately I can't find anything about the Giles family in Icomb itself. I would be grateful for any help!

Hello Colin and Lynda
Thank you so much for coming back to me so quickly.
I would love to see the family tree if you could send me a copy.

I originally sent this e-mail to your hotmail account but I had a reply today from someone called Colin Hutchins in Oregon who had received it!! Do you want to try e-mailing me and then I can reply. catherine.shaw@fiserv.com

Like Lynda I’ve always liked the idea of trying to trace the family. Hambidge is so unusual that it would be really nice to know more about where it has come from. But I never seem to find the time.
As Albert had no children I guess my brothers sons are the only ones carrying on the name from this branch of the family.
Are you in touch with any of our other first cousins? We usually have a Christmas card from Isobel and Len. Ruth and Ian and their children came to our youngest daughters christening, but that’s over 10 years ago now. Other than that I have completely lost touch.
My eldest brother David lives in Crewe. He has two children and is a grandfather himself. The younger one, John, lives near Nottingham. He has two daughters and a son. David and John are both doctors. And we live in Windsor. We have daughters, both going to my old school in Windsor at the moment. My mother lives up in Snowdonia. We are trying persuade her to move back to Windsor. She’s had some health problems and it is very isolated where she lives and such a long way away.
It would be good to hear your news and about any of the rest of the family.

Dear Colin
Thank you so much for your e-mail. This is Catherine, daughter of Harold Hambidge and Shirley. So Lynda is my first cousin. I'm sure we have met, but a long time ago. It would be good to get in touch again. I was born in 1964 and have two older brothers, David (1954) and John (1958). We are all married and all have children. My family lives back in Windsor where we all grew up. My husband is also David, I am now a Shaw, and our daughters are Rebecca (1992) and Abigail (1994). John has 3 children and David has 2. Our father Harry died nearly 20 years ago now. Our mother lives in North Wales where they had retired to about a year before my fathers death. David and I attended the funerals of Beatrice our grandmother and Albert our uncle.
It would be good to get in touch with our cousins again and it would be good to hear from you again.
Catherine

My great great granduncle John Chamberlain married Mary Ann Hambidge on the 29 July 1830 - her parents were John and Ann Hambidge. According to your message they went to Australia. Do you have any
other information about this family? Mary was born on
29th July 1798. I also live in the US in Florida.

I am searching for anyone who can tell me about
Mary Hambidge who married my great great
granduncle, John Chamberlain in Saint Lukes Old
Street, Finsbury, London, England, on July 29 1830,
her birthday. She was born in Berkshire. I see from
the LDS records that there are 3 Mary Hambidges -
born Oct 31, 1797; December 5 1808 and Mary
above, born July 29, 1830. I am not completely
certain that this is my John, except for the fact that his
brother William was married at the same church and
was born a year earlier than Mary. Thank you. Sylvia

Dear Catherine, I don't know if this message will find you, but here goes. We are coming over to England in late May & I would love to find out a little more about my family. There can't be that many Hambidges in England surely. I do know that a John & Ann Hambidge, their son (17) Benjamin Whitlock Hambidge and sister Mary Ann left Towcester, Northhamptonshire where they may have been butchers... for Adelaide South Australia aboard the clipper"Forfashire". The year was 1848.

I have found that they are not mentioned in the christenings or marriages at Towcester, so I presume they came from some other part of England before ending up at Towcester. I did discover an Isaac Hambidge had a business there. I believe Towcester used to be a big Coaching Village and when the trains came in, jobs became scarce. The dates seem to tie in and might explain why they left for Australia.

Anyway I hope this note finds you, and wouldn't it be fun if we found out we were related
Yours Lesley Wells

My maiden name is Hambidge. My father was Harold Hambidge, one of four children of Albert Hambidge. They were a farming family I think in Uffington near Farringdon, Wilts. If anyone has any information about this part of the family I would love to hear from you. My brothers John and David have sons and are the only ones to carry on the family name from my Grandad. I have never met any other Hambidge families and would like to hear from you.

I have an interest in the name Hambidge from Icomb, Glos and Westcote, Glos. I have traced them back to the 1600's so far. They were yeoman farmers. My family, name Merchant, intermarried with the Hambidge family - probably because they were living next door to each other.

Thank you again for replying. I am still having problems finding George Hambidges birth. It doesnt help that George seems to be a common name for a Hambidge and a John as his father.

I can't find him on the 1881 or 1891 census. At the moment looking for him on the 1891 census by Northampton Streets.

Thanks again

Thank you James for replying, at the moment the only two Georges I can find, that are probably the right ones are from Icomb, Glos and Highworth, Wilts.

I probably wont know which one he is till I look at the 1901 census which should say where my George is born. I know he was dead in 1903 so hopefully he was still alive in 1901.

He was put down as an unknown resident on the 1881 census. I think this was because he was an Engine driver and was away at the time they compiled it.

If you would like to contact me my email address is cassiepage21@hotmail.com
