I am a descendent of John Adam Hambright through his daughter Maria married to Jonas Metzger. I'd love any information you can send my way about John Adam or Maria if you have acquired any in the years since this thread began.
There are so many John Hambrights and I've been only partially successful in sorting them all out!
Thank you.

Re: Hambright-Rees marriage

If you are interested in descendants of Jacob Rees (incorrectly spelt Reez in the church indices) and Elizabeth Shultz you can contact me directly at alexrome91@gmail.com I recently travelled to Lancaster County and spent a day at the county Historical Society and found documents confirming Jacob was my ancestor who went to Pelham Township, Upper Canada circa 1788.

I also have a lead into Jacob Rees' father. I believe he was named Thomas Rees. As you can see from the marriage records Jacob married Elizabeth Shultz the daughter of Andrew Shultz of Lampeter Twp. While at the historical society I looked at a book of original warrants for land in Lancaster County. There were two entries for Rees: Morgan Rees of Martic Twp. and Thomas Rees of Lampeter Twp. Based on geography and dates I would say that Jacob Rees was a brother to George and John and that Thomas was their father.

I'd like to have an email address so I can email some of the old photographs from the Knoxville area. In looking through the female children, I found one that had the name, Lilly, at the bottom. Name has been cut in half, so the whole name isn't legible. Do you know of a photo of your ancestor at about the age of 3 or 4 sitting in a chair with lace up black shoes and a white dress with 2 black stripes diagonally across the front? Lots of my photographs are from a photograph studio in the Knoxville area. I know it's a long shot, but worth a try. I'd also like to know more about your Hambright line you mentioned. Thanks so much ...

Actually, my line was also from the Roane County, the Loudon, and the McMinn County areas. My great grandmother, Kate Wells Hambright, as well as 4 older siblings, were all born in Roane County, which is close to the Knoxville area. The photographer studio on the back of several old photographs is in Knoxville. And my great, great grandmother, Sarah Lutecia Kerr Hambright's folks were from the Maryville area, also close to Knoxville. So, I think there would be a good chance someone from the Knoxville Hambright's might be able to compare old photos. And some young men are in confederate uniforms and some in union. I know the Hambright's were divided on this in the entire area of east Tennessee.

Hi,
Lillie Scates is from the Benjamin line of Col. Frederick Hambright's children. Benjamin was the son of Frederick and Sarah. He moved to the Knoxville area and had a son, John w. Hambright....who had a son, Henry Delray Hambright, ..who had a daughter, Lillie Agnes Hambright (married Frank Scates).... who had Lillie Scates. Most of the family stayed in the Knoxville area.

Kathy, your photos probably won't be any help here because we're in the John Hardin line. Your ancestors, and mine, were further south in the Cleveland and Calhoun area. They may have crossed paths, but it isn't likely that they would have been having photos of the two families together.

You're always so sweet to share. I'd like to see what the original poster has in her files for photos. I don't think I have any of that family.

Thanks so much for your response. I'll find my old photographs (which are already scanned and on a thumb drive) and send them. Would you prefer I send them to your email or where? Also, can you find out if the Hambright line you mentioned in East TN is from Loudon, McMinn or Bradley Counties? My line lived in Cleveland, Loudon, and surrounding cities. Some are buried at Red Clay, GA. Some at Hambright Cemetery on the Hiwasee River in Bradley County. Let me know where to send the photos and thanks again!

I saw on the message board that John Stephen Trenkel md Catharina Hambrecht and their child was was Christopher Trinkle, b.1752 in Winchester, Frederick, VA. Christopher married Elizabeth Wizor 1773, their children were Henry, Elizabeth, Margaret, Stephen, Frederick, Jacob, Adam, John, Catherine,Mary. I have uncovered the name of Elizabeth Wizor whose signature is twice written in a first edition book (1807) by Patrick Gass, "A journal of the voyages and travels of a corps of discovery." A journal kept by Patrick Gass who traveled with Lewis and Clarke (1804-1806)

Kathy, their are a lot of Col Frederick Hambrights' ancestors around (all over U.S.) We have a website Colfrederickhambright.com every year on the anniversary of the battle of Kings Mountain (closest Sunday to Oct. 7) we have a Reunion of all ancestors who can attend. Usually events are held to assist with finding ancestor info and you can tour the battle field. We encourage all who are able to attend. Next year the date is October 9, it is a covered dish meal, but is you travel from out of state we provide the food. Many of us are in DAR, SAR and CAR.
Joyce Holcomb
holcomb.joyce@yahoo.com

Hi, Kathy..

Have you already sent me some of these pictures? I might be able to help identify some of them if you would pass them along in digital format. You know, we're the same clan and I have some of my own photos to compare them to. I haven't put all mine in digital format, but it's a shot!

Would love to visit more... so you're going to have to come to Austin or maybe we can meet up in your area.

Best wishes,
rebecca
Oh, Joyce, I need your help on one issue with the line. I have recorded in the files that your grandmother, Bessie Hambright, married Thurman Cline. Since I don't have any record of children from that union (and your father, John William Hambright, would probably have been one), could you help me get this right?

I'd like to get your father's generation and your generation correct. And when you contact me again, I can share lots more dates and information on Jessea if you'd like. While I only have his birth date of 1810 in SC, he lived with the Hambrights most of his life. And he must have been very much like a family memeber all along.

Again... would love to chat and fill in more gaps!

Best wishes...rebecca
Hi, Joyce. I'll be happy to help you get this sorted out. You have a few of the last names confused ( or at least you don't use maiden names) so it was a good thing that I've worked on this line and know it pretty well.

I want to know if you know your cousin, Mary Hambright, who has contacted me in the past. She was going to send me information on living cousins so I could bring this line up to date, but she hasn't gotten to it yet.

Here's the line that I have so far. It's confusing because not only is your ggggrandfather, Jessea Hambright a former slave who continued to live with the Michael and Faithy Hambright after the Civil War, but he married Hulda Louisa Hambright who was the for former Mrs. Charles Christmas. Hulda Louisa Hambright was the daughter of Abner and Susanna Hambright, and Abner was the son of David Hambright and wife, Sarah Jane Graham. David was the son of Col. Frederick Hambright.

Still with me? Okay, so Jessea Hambright and Hulda Louisa Hambright got married sometime between 1862-1873, possibly in York Co., SC, and they had a son named Emmanuel Hambright, b. 1873 in York SC and d. May 27, 1927 in Kings Mt. NC.

Emmanuel married Elmira Ross (1883-1962), and they had 6 children... Oveda ( 1903-1992), Nancy (b. 1904), Mattie N. (1908-1948), Jossie (b. 1908), Jessie Alexander (1908-1991) and Bessie (b. 1931).... actually, Jossie and Jessie may be the same... I'm still working on that one.

My distanct cousin, Mary, is the daughter of Jessie Alexander and she is in contact with me. Since she is your close cousin, I hope that you will contact her and you all can get your lines updated in the fammily tree.

As the historian for the Hambright Family in Kings Mountain, I'm trying to get as much current information as possible for the files.

If you want to contact me directly, I'm happy to talk to you and put you in contact with Mary. She attended the family reunion in Kings Mt a couple of years ago and I would love to hear from her again. So go to the Hambright web site and find my contact information there. Your tree info is listed there, too.

Thanks for posting and I hope to hear from you soon!

Rebecca Kohout
Austin Texas

Can you clarify if the Frederic Hambright was Col. Frederick Hambright, commander at The Battle of Kings Mountain, or one of his descendants. Col. Frederick Hambright died in 1817. There were several descendants of his line also named Frederick who lived in North and South Carolina as well as Tennessee.

Colonel Frederick Hambright – Independence Day

Would like to share something that I realized when I visited the Kings Mountain Battleground several years ago that comes to mind again as the 4th approaches. Maybe something many would not think of or understand about the events of the Battle that is a proud reflection on Colonel Hambright and the others who fought for the Patriot cause. What I saw comes from one of millions who served as an Army Infantryman. What I saw and realized at the Battle Mount hit me like a ton of bricks. Something you have to see to understand.

The spot where Colonel Hambright was severely wounded is on the upper slope near the top of the Battle Mount. He was mounted at the time, leading his South Fork Boys up the steep slope after Major Chronicle was mortally wounded at the bottom. History shows that Colonel Hambright never hesitated in taking command when Major Chronicle was killed. Colonel Hambright's men had the advantage of being on foot and using trees for cover. My point is that Colonel Hambright was a much easier target for Ferguson's men because he was higher off the ground. What I am saying is that Colonel Hambright knew full well that he was an easy target, yet he never hesitated in his responsibility and he knew full well what risk he was taking.

One historical account: "In this conflict Colonel Hambright was severely wounded by a large rifle ball passing through the fleshy part of the thigh. It was soon discovered by the soldiers near him that he was wounded and bleeding profusely. Samuel Moore, of York county, South Carolina, requested him to be taken from his horse; he refused by saying, 'he knew he was wounded but was not sick or faint from the loss of blood-said he could still ride very well, and therefore deemed it his duty to fight on till the battle was over.' And most nobly did he remain in his place, encouraging his men by his persistent bravery and heroic example until signal victory crowned the American arms."

Even the ranking officer in Britain in charge of the British and loyalist forces on this side of the pond later stated that the war was lost in the southern states; and that the loss at the Battle of Kings Mountain was the beginning of the end.

My respect and gratitude for Colonel Hambright and the others, then and since, knows no limits.

Colonel Hambright was one heck of a man. We have much to be proud and thankful for.

Dennis Dover

Hambrights of Tennessee

I have many old tin types and photographs of Hambright family members. Most will be people from the east Tennessee and north Georgia area. They lived in Loudon, McMinn and Bradley counties. The photographs were found in an old family album from the Civil War period and are of both Confederal men in uniform and Union men in uniform. Some are of females and couples. If anyone would have any idea of the identify of these Hambrights or other family lines from this era, please let me know. I'd be happy to email.

Hi, Cousins!

I'm really excited to see all this conversation about Vince Hambright and the "Benjamin" line from Col. Frederick Hambright.

Some of you may have noticed that we are compiling a new book on the Col. Frederick genealogy lines and I have been trying to put the Benjamin line together myself because we haven't had any cousins on this line who we knew to be working on it.

My records stop with Severine M. Hambright (b. 11/7/1902) and his wife Winnie Hammond.

It would be great to update the rest of this line with your more recent info.

If any or all of you would contact me, I'll be happy to share what we have on the complete Benjamin line.... or anything else you want to know.

The stories of our family are what will be so interesting for our descendants, so newspaper clips and old photos are always appreciated.

I'm anxious to hear from those in this family thread who can bring us up to date!

Thanks for sharing...and I'm here to help if needed.

Rebecca Kohout
Hambright Family, Co-Historian

Hey! I have some info on Vincent M. Hambright and a few Hambright generations back (assuming its correct) as well as a few pics. In fact I have a whole box full of pictures from Grandma Hambright that I can't identify :( I think a lot of them are her family (Schad)though. I've been scanning them in every time I go home. I would love to email you and share what I know including pics. Perhaps you or your father can identify some people for me!!

-Nicole Apple

Wow, I am amazed to have just stumbled upon these messages back as far as the year 2000!!! My dad, Vince O. Hambright, is the son of Vince Hambright, the prize fighter. I have old newspaper articles from when he was killed and some photos of his fighting years. My dad has talked about how his grandfather was in the war, was injured, and that is how he met and fell in love with his Filipino nurse. So my grandfather was half Filipino, and half German from Severine (sp?), as far as my dad knows. He knew his Filipino roots were from Cebu. My dad is now 82, and I am 46. My dad grew up in Cincinatti, OH. I understand that Severine played in the Cincinatti orchestra!?

Any more info out there? I would love to learn more.

Children for Henry and Mary Hambright are Lillie b. 1875, Alice b. 1877, John B. b. 1879, Minerva A. b. Oct 1880, Rebecca D. b. Oct 1880, Alma E. b. Apr 1885, Henry D. b. Jul 1888, Charles C. b. Aug 1890, Olive Irene b. Jul 1894, and James M. b. Jun 1896. They also had two children who did not live to adulthood. I haven't found any other that were born after James, so I think that is all there are.

rebecca in Austin
Historian for Hambright Family in Kings Mt. NC

John Hambright's oldest son Benjamin married Lavina Stonecipher and the had a son named Henry D Hambright.
Henry had several children, my great grandmother, Minerva Hambright, who was called Nerva. She had several sisters one of which was Eudora. I believe this is my greatgrandmother and her two sisters. As i recall the census in Morgan County Tn 1850 shows the youngest child of John was Missouri. I will check further and get back to you.

Rebecca
