Hello,
David Hamer was born in Llanidloes in 1814. He married Mary Breese in 1838. He was initially a weaver and later a workhouse relieving officer. I am trying to establish who his father was, his father's name also being David and was probably also a weaver.

Hi Kirk,

re: photos, have you checked descendants of Joseph'a siblings? I know that Margaret Hamer Hecox in Santa Cruz kept in touch with her family throughout her long life, came to Vermont to visit her family after the civil war, and the family scrapbook in the Santa Cruz library contains an obit of her cousin Ellen Wilkinson Chaddock who died well after she returned to PA from Vermont. I do not remember any photos in the scrapbook, but she must have had some. The Art and History Museum in Santa Cruz has the Hecox family Bible and photos of the California family, but I don't remember others,

Julie

Thank you, Julie, for the additional information. It's nice to know that John is still active. I'll see if I can find the Union County history that the Vollmers are in. I have the Vollmer's back to 1555, but I'm always glad to add additional information.

Let's hope that someday someone stumbles across where Thomas Hamer and Elenor Lyons came from.

I'm still holding out hope of finding a picture of Joseph and Rebecca Hamer. I'm sure there's one in the corner of someone's basement just waiting for the rest of us to enjoy.

I mentioned John D. McMullen's Geocities site to Krk, thinking it was closed down but that John would have migrated it elsewhere. Kirk came up with his FamilyTreeMaker site, and Noreen with FortuneCity. I looked briefly at both, saw that John had amplified the information I gave him on the John Hamer- Hannah Hamor line, including the basis of the DAR memberships of Vermont IL Hamer descendants. John is descended from the oldest son, Thomas L.; Kirk and Joseph 1820 from a middle son (I think I said Joseph before but I think it was James--John will have it right; and I from the youngest son John, all children of Thomas and Elenor Lyons Hamer (Hammer on his Nothumberland Co. Chilliasquaque Twp. land grant). Except for that brief look, I am operating from long-term memory, except that when I saw the latest updates and saw 2008 I was concerned and contacted John directly. He said he doesn't have much time for genealogy these days but he keeps his WorldConnect site constantly updated.

To help you evaluate the information, I did most of my Hamer-Hamor work from primary records supplemented by newspaper clippings, including microfilm and travel, including to Northumberland, Union and Chester Co, PA and Vermont IL, as well as family records of the three Wilkinson sons and daughter (Cornelia Hamer Wilkinson, who married Stephen Mershon Colladay in Vermont, IL) who wound up in Pomona CA, my birthplace. They came to Vermont with their parents from Chester Co, PA, from Hamorton, PA, where their mother and they grew up with her maternal Hamor cousins. Their two older sisters, who married Ezra Dilwoth and Caleb Cox in Vermont, stayed ther.,

Their parents, Josiah Wilkinson and Ellen Lyons Hamer, married at Kennett Monthly Meeting and lived at least for while at Hickory Hill. Their grandfathers had settled on neighboring farms in New London after western migration in PA, including Edgemont, where Thomas Hamor m. Phebe Howard. I do not know the origin or marriage place of Josiah's mother, Hannah Calvert or Ellen's grandfather, Thomas Hamor.

Ellen's brother Patterson Hamer, already in business with his 2nd cousin Edward Hamor, preceded the Wilikinsons to Vermont and continued working together. Edward as one of three Hamor brothers who changed the spelling of their name to Hamer prior to coming or in Vermont; their sister Phoebe effectively changed her name to Hamer when Patterson went back to Hamorton and brought her back as his bride. The siblings who stayed in PA or moved elsewhere did not change their names.

Tips for Kirk: there's extensive documentation of the Vollmer family, I think in a Union Co. History. James before and after his marriage lived in White Deer Twp, Union Co., just across the river (and bridge) from Watsontown, Northumberland Co, PA from his Seibert in-laws. Either then or at some other time they lived close enough for Joseph's sister Margaret Hecox could visit them alone asa young child.

I haven't seen the DAR documentation or visited the PA archives; the land grant might give clues to Thomas's origins. It would be interesting to know of any of James' descendants were members of DAR.

Based on what we know, I don't think we know where Thomas Hamer and Elenor Lyons came from.

Julie

Hi Kirk
I know how important it is to have a picture I feel the same way and i Have yet to find one of Patterson HAMER, the photos i have seen of the HAMERS are very distinct in that they resemble one another very strongly. I do have a HAMER photo of a group of them sitting on the front porch of the house in Vermont, but they are unidentified.

Also, there are no HAMER's left in Vermont that i am aware of but i am early into the research, I have located several in the Vermont Cemetery but that is all I know to date.

John McMullen does have photos on his site at the link I gave you, click under Family Tree Mker link and there are tons of photos did you see them?

Kind Regards,
Noreen

Hi Tita.........I thought Thurston was an unusual name till I read your post ;-) The Thurston Hamer in the obit was the son of Henry Gwenffrud Humphrey Hamer (brother of my grandfather)and Sarah Fallow. Thurston was born in Lowell MA in 1913. His grandparents, Henry Hamer and Levina Humphreys came from Llandloes, Montgomeryshire, Wales in the late 1800's. Should you find any connection to these Hamer's, please e-mail me at EveBond@aol.com. Barbara Bond

Was surprised to see the name. I am married to the third Thurston Hamer, my son is Thurston F. Hamer, and his son is our fifth one. I only new of one cousin James Thurston who carried the name. The original Thurston in our family was born in Bury, Lancashire and came to Mexico and started the first linen mill. So much of the family still lives here. I will try to find a link to our ancesters.

Thanks for the info.

Tita Hamer

You're very welcome. Everything I wrote was from memory, so I may have gotten some things wrong--it's been a long time since I worked the Vermont situation out!

There are Hamors in Northumberland County that none of us have been able to connect to the nearby Presbyterian (?)Hamers. Thomas Hamer of Northumberland Co may have been in Vincent Twp in Chester Co. earlier. There are two clear Hamer lines in the Phila/Chester Co area--a German one that went to N. Carolina, and two brothers from the Penn settlement.

Thomas Hamor, father of Abraham and Hannah and a number of others, seems to come out of nowhere.

If you can figure out the antecedents of any of those, a number of us would be interested.

Let me know if you run into any roadblocks.

Julie

Re: Joseph Hamer - 1820 in Pennsylvania to 1909 in Illinois

I'm related to Joseph's Northumberland County PA family and suggest you post on the Fulton County IL lists if you haven't done so already. I should warn you that the Hamer story in Vermont, IL is very confused, in spite of my many attempts to straighten it out. If you can find John D. McMullen's website (it was on Geocities but I heard that site was closing) he had the best set of photos and Northumberland Co. Hamer descendants I know of. Out of kindness he also put up information about Chester Co. Hamors, who inexplicably changed the spelling of their last name to Hamer in Vermont.

The confusion is my family's fault, I think. John McMullen is descended from Thomas Hamer and Elinor Lyon's oldest son, Thomas L. Hamer. His family went to New York and then Indiana. I'm descended from the youngest son, John, who married Hannah Hamor in Philadelphia and died or disappeared after they had 3-4 children. Hannah took her children to live near her brother Abraham Hamor, postmaster of Hamorton, not far from their father's farm in New London, Chester County. The Hamer and Hamor cousins studied together, went into business together, and some of them joined the large Quaker migration from Chester Co. to Vermont IL. in the mid 1850's. For some reason your Joseph Hamer's parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Seibert and their adult families. also came to Vermont from the Northumberland/Union Co. area, although they were not Quakers and not part of any larger migration. So the "real" Hamers in Vermont besides your Joseph's relatives were John and Hannah's children Ellen Lyons Hamer Wilkinson, who came with her children and husband Josiah, and her brother Patterson.

Patterson Hamer was in business with his cousin Edward Hamor, who with two brothers changed their surname to Hamer in Vermont. Patterson Hamer confused things further by going back to Chester Co to fetch yet another of uncle Abraham's children for a bride--thus Phoebe Hamor Hamer.

Perhaps the most interesting Hamer of them all was your Joseph's sister Margaret Marie, who married Adna Hecox and ended up in California in 1846, or their cousin Thomas L. Hamer, who resigned as a U,S. Congressman to enlist as a private in the war with Mexico and was handed a General's Commission before he set foot in the country.

The Follmer/Vollmer family is well documented in the Union or Northumberland County histories.

Hi,
I am Ernest Pope Boland. My grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Hamer. Her father was John Gainus Hamer who was born in Marlboro County, S.C. He is likely close kin of your William McCall Hamer. I have a very large file on the Hamer family and I am in touch with several Hamer reasearchers. I do not have any information or a listing for William McCall Hamer. I will be happy to swap data with you and help you with Hamers that I have. Please let me know who your William McCall Hamer is descended from. My Hamer line is descended from John Hicks Hamer of Anson County, N.C. Flora Janie Hooker published a book on John Hicks Hamer in 1945. I have a copy of this book and I will look it up to see if your William McCall Hamer is in the book. It will help me if you can send me the information about his father and possibably his grandfather. My e-mail address is pahoke@bellsouth.net I also have quite a number of Hamer pictures some are from the Mississippi Hamers. Please let me hear from you about your Hamer connection. Thanks,
Ernest

There are two Thomas Hamer's in the 1851 Census both living in Llandinam.
The first one, born about 1777 is married to Ursula, age 65. He is a farmer of 100 acres and they live at 65 Llandinam Hall with their children, Sarah 31, Ursula 25, James 20, granddaughter Sarah Hamer 9, as well as Richard Manuel 30, John Bennett 27, & Thomas Davies 19.

The second one, born about 1790 is married to Margaret (same age), an invalid. He is a flannel weaver and they live at 101 Nant Bryndu with no children living with them.

Our Thomas (I am descended from his son Henry) was born about 1823. Now he could be the son of the first one and married and moved away but I would think he too would have been a farmer and helped with hid dad's 100 acres. My second reason for thinking it's the second one is that in 1851 our Thomas lived at Bryndu Cottage and you stated his wife's name was Margaret.

I haven't been able to find much more than that so I would appreciate you keeping me in mind if you come up with a solution.
Barbara Bond
EveBond@aol.com
Dracut MA USA
Hi Brenda....I thought your screen name looked familiar ;-)
I do have some information on Thomas (Jr), brother of Edward and Henry. He was born May 11, 1845 in Llanbister to Thomas (1826) and his first wife. She died prior to 10/22/1849 when Thomas (age 26 / laborer / widower living in Penrallt, Llanidloes, son of Thomas) married Elizabeth (Betsy) Morgans, (age 21,spinster / weaver, living in Bryncock, Llanidloes, dau of Edward Morgans). They were married in the Baptist Chapel and Thomas signed his name while Elizabeth signed with an "x"

Stay in touch....and feel free to e-mail me at EveBond@aol.com.

As a descendant of Thomas Cochran Hamer, I am trying to
find a photograph of his son, James Gillispie Hamer, who was born in Anson County, North Carolina and moved to Mississippi in his youth. He married Mississippi Gov. Matthews' daughter, Sarah. Perhaps in the 1800s a photograph of him was sent to relatives in South Carolina. Do you know of any family pictures that have James G. Hamer in them or any letters from Thomas C. Hamer? (Also, I would like to know who owns the two old Hamer houses still standing in Hamer, SC. and the Hamer families who originally lived in them. Your reply will be appreciated.

I have a tintype with picture of a young woman reputed to be George Gray's daughter with date Sep 1875, the name John Hamer written on it and another name which first name I canNOT make out and last name Hamer. I would GUESS that it is first name of the woman and that this picture was taken at about time of her marriage to John Hamer. I am just guessing since I found this in old family pictures and I do NOT know the name of this woman...--- when an older family member was questioned apparently ~ 20 years ago they apparently said that 'this is George Gray's daughter so that was written then'... HOWever, the names and date were written probably close to 1875... if not at time... this picture is from Lancaster MO I believe...

My great grandfather Henry Hamer, dob 1840, came to the Chicago area in 1882 from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. His wife's name was Sofia, 1835-1905. They had one child, William Hamer, 1875-1946. Sofia's maiden name may have been Goettsche and her first marriage may have been to a Budman. Henry had a brother named Claus. A family member advised three Hamer men came from Germany. One was a truck farmer, one a shoemaker, and the other a tailor. My relatives lived in Park Ridge, Des Plaines, and Wheeling. Any of this match any info you have?

Re: HAMER, Martha b 1798 prob Beguildy, Radnorshire

I am just starting to work on the Hamers of Beguildy and this is what I have found out from the Beguildy Parish Records (courtesy of transcripts from the Powys Family History Society). To link all these people together requires deduction, and I would dearly like to have further information to confirm the connections before I would say they are definite: Martha Hamer was baptized on 29 Nov 1797 in Beguildy. She was listed as the daughter of Mary Hamer, but unlike other entries where the mother only was listed, it did not say she was an illigitimate child. There is another entry like this too: Edward Hamer, son of Mary Hamer was baptized on 3 March 1808. An Edward Hamer can be found in the 1841 census living with Mary and farming. Mary is listed as a farmer's widow. This is the Edward Hamer whom I have an interest in. This Edward Hamer, farmer of Cwmbigol, married Elizabeth Brown (daughter of John Brown, blacksmith) on 23 August 1843. In the Parish Register he is listed as the son of Abraham Hamer, farmer. There was an Abraham Hamer, son of Henry and Mary Hamer, baptized on 11 Dec 1763 and buried at the age of 51 on 20 Jul 1815. Henry and Mary Hamer had several children. Judging by the dates, one of these was Richard born 1766, who is most likely the Richard who became the vicar of Beguildy who died in 1852, age given as 84. A Google search on this Richard indicates that he was the grandson of an Abraham Hamer of Pabpllwyd, Llanbadarn Fynydd, Radnorshire. There is another daughter of Mary Hamer - mother of Edward and possibly Martha - Mary who can be linked in by tracing back a great grandson living with Mary and Edward in the 1841 Wales census.

Re: Thomas Hamer /Elizabeth Hamer

Hi,
Not sure what info you have already but on the 1841 census Thomas (if this is the right one) was living with his parents and Elizabeth his sister at Little Mill, Dethynydd (a township in the parish of Llandinam about 4 miles NE from there) where his father was a miller.
His father was Thomas Hamer aged 50, mother Margaret aged 60 and sister Elizabeth aged 15 although this could just be a 'rounded' age.
In 1851 he was living in Llanidloes at Cottage Bryndu (writing is difficult to make out) with his wife Elizabeth (born Llangurig)who was a flannel worker - Thomas was a lead miner. They had children Thomas and Edward.
Hope that this helps.

Re: Hamer's from South Carolina

My great-great-grandfather's name was William Henry Hamer. He married Martha Ann Heverling in Erie, Pa. in 1848. They moved to Rock Island, Illinois and their first child was my
great-grandmother Mary Jane Hamer born on January 15, 1852 there. I would appreciate having any information you may have on him. It seems there is a roadblock for my getting any further information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
