Hi,

I asked earlier if there were a Hamill Y-DNA Surname Project. Could not find one. I have a sample just mailed to FTDNA for my Hamill line.

I will be uploading to Y-Search when the results are avialable.

This Hamill Line -- earliest known ancestor -- Patrick Hamill b. 1781, County Antrim, Ireland. Oral Tradition says he has two brothers, Roger who stayed in Ireland, and Hugh who immigrated to France. Oral Tradition also mentions Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland.

BTW: there is a Hamill Facebook page.

Pattie

I know some of these posts are a few months old but I want to offer my help to those of you looking for Hamills in the Chattanooga TN area. I am a direct descendant of Samuel Hamill and Katherine Best of Blunt County TN. My lineage is Samuel-to-Robert Henry-to-George Washington-to-Ephraim James-to-Robert Washington-to-Danny Ray-to-me. As far as I know the Chattanooga Hamill family to not have organized reunions at this time (maybe one could be planned in future). I have a copy of our family tree book with a lot of names and information in it as well as any needed information back to my great grandfather Ephraim James Hamill (EJ). If you would like to get in touch with me I would be more than happy to share what information I have. My email is mtsu262@gmail.com

Jessica Hamill

Amy, have you gotten any further with your Hamill research? Milo Smith and Anna E. were my great grandparents. Daniel Best and Mary Jones Hamill were my
great-greats. Samuel Hamill was Daniel's father, and married to Katherine Best. I have Robert Hammolle and Jane Ferguson as parents of Samuel. Nathaniel as father of Robert. I found a note in my grandfather and great grandfather's (Milo Smith Hamill) Bible saying that my granddad's great grandfather was David Hamill..????? What do you have?
Do the Hamill's have a reunion!!? Would love to hook up.
Lynda (Hephzibah, GA; BD 5/8/47 in Chattanooga; raised in Kingston, TN) 706-699-6543

Hamill Stewart - old postcards

I have a large collection of old postcards, all addressed to Mrs.Hamill Stewart, at various addresses in Sussex (Lindfield, Eastbourne) and Sloane Square, London. The dates on the cards runs from 1904, through the first World War and up to 1941. Most are from a Hugh Arbuthnot, 'Bertie' Arbuthnot, Uncle William and Donald Glossop. The writers travelled widely over Europe. What they have written is a glimpse into their lives. There are ones in pencil from France during Bertie's service during the 1st War with views of the destruction there. They are facinating and I am loathed to break up this intimate correspondence. Would the family be interested in them?

Hello, cousin! The people you mention were my grandmother's first cousins and Uncle.
My great grandfather was Thomas Hamill, born May 1852, married to Ellen Hanly in 1880 and had the following children: Mary Agnes, Thomas Joseph, Bernard William, Michael Francis, Eleanor Loretta, and Peter James.
Eleanor Loretta was my maternal grandmother.
Thomas was a carpenter and died in 1905 from TB.
None of Thomas's sons ever married. Mary married a man named John J. Connell and had 2 surviving children. Eleanor Loretta had 2 daughters, one of whom is my mother.
The story I have is that there were 9 Hamill brothers. Do you have any info about that? Best wishes, Loraine Izzo

I realize it has been 12 years since your posting, but I think we are both looking into the same family. I have been researching a Daniel Hamill of County Monaghan, who married a Martha McKee in Ireland in 1806. They had a daughter Mary Hamill, baptized in April 1814. Where did you get the birthdate of May 12, 1814? The family emigrated to Canada around 1830, where they ended up in Cartwright Township, Durham, Ontario. Mary Hamill marries John Holmes and continues to live in Cartwright. Sounds like the same family, though the father is named Daniel and was somewhat older, being born in the 1770's.

I realize you wrote your message nearly 10 years ago, but I hope you are still monitoring it on occasion. I was surprised to see you mention names I have in my tree and wonder if those you mentioned lived in Pennsylvania. The names are all in the same immediate family. Hugh (b. abt. 1827 in PA) and Harriet were the parents of Archibald Hugh, Isaac, Charlotte, Sarah Adalade, Mary Jane, Zarah U, and Maude Alene. The only name not listed in your message was Maude, so I'm very curious. The family lived in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Hugh's father was Archibald Hamill, who was born in Ireland at some point between 1790-1800.
Thanks,
Diane

Hello Jennifer!
I would say that your Leonard Bernard is not the same one as mine.
There is no son named Herbert.
I have my info confirmed by the Griffith's Valuation ( not sure what year off hand as I don't have my files handy) BUT here is my question to you:
Is your ancestor from Castleblaney?? If not from Castleblaney, do you know where ( more than co. Monahan ) that they are from?? Although you can certainly search each townland, although it is teadious work, (but I have done it myself). You can often find interesting info doing it.
Do you have dates of birth, death etc. or at leat approximate dates.
There are other Hamills, in the area & I know some are related & I still have relations there that I am in touch with. So who knows our Bernard's could have been brothers or cousins.
Have you looked at the 1901 & 1911 Irish Census yet??
Make sure you check there, it is a treasury of info & there is almost monthly more info going up by Irish Genealogist.
Keep in touch with me. If I see anything of interest to you, I will drop you a note & let me know of your undoing work!!! I love to hear success stories!
Ellen. : )

Nightowl, I am a descendent of The Milo Wyrick Hamill line. I have Milo smith as his dad, Daniel Best as his dad, Samuel as his dad but there is where I need help. I found a Robert Hamill not your James Hamill as the father of Samuel. Where did yiu locate James connection to Samuel? From Robert (b.in Atrim,Ireland 1751) and married to Jane Ferguson I have as his father a Nathaniel from Antrim. (?) Another twist is that I recently found in my Grandad Milo Wyrick Hamill's family Bible a note whic read, "My GGGrandfather was David Hamill from Belfast Ireland." making me think the Robert and Nathaniel I found are wrong. Can you suggest sources for me?

TN Obit Clarissa A (Anderson) Hamill, d. 1934
I found this in the A Biography Folder of obits at the McClung Collection in Knoxville,TN. It did not appear dated nor was the paper where it was published indicated on the obit. IT was a long obit. Name spelt "Hamil" in article. My husband is a Hamill but we have no known connections with Hamill family.

Clarissa Adeline Anderson was born February 3, 1850. died May 14, 1934. Aged 84 years, 3 months and 21 days.
She was the daughter of Robert and Nancy Anderson who lived the greater part of their lives in Blount county.
On November 11, 1869, she was married to Hugh Alexander Hamill by the Rev. James MacNeal, and soon afterward began their married life on the farm near Clover Hill, which is still referred to as the Hamil Farm.
Six children were born to them:-- Charles of Friendsville; Mrs. Lula Lane, in whose home her mother has lived for the past decade; James who death occurrd about 3 years ago in colorado; Mrs. Hattie Wallace who died in Colorado in 1916; Mrs. Effie Sterling, of Maryville, and Robert Hamill of Colorado.
As to her spiritual life--she was converted in her early childhood, was faithful in attendance at Sunday School and church, and after her marriage, united with her husband with the Colver Hill Church-- in which he became an officer, and she an ardent worker and supporter of all the church activities. They both maintained their membership in the Colver Hill Church as long as they lived.
Mrs. Hamil was a faithful church goer, a kind and helpful neighbor, and a most hospitable hostess in her home; she was especially fond of children, and in her little great grand child, Edward.
She has been an invalid for perhaps a decade, and during all her suffering has been patient, and uncomplaining; only regretting that she was thus kept from attendance on the church services, which were ever a source of help and comfort to her.
She is the last of her father's family, and at the ripe age of 84 has been called home.
In addition to the four children mentioned before, she is survived by eighteen grand children, and by nine great-grand children.
Amy, there is a Patricia Hamill on Ancestory.com who found a lot of info from a book by Goodspeed called "History of Tennessee." You may be able to find it in your public library. Do you live in Chattanooga? I was very serious about attending a Hamill reunion. If you have any info on that, please let me know.
I also ran across a listing of all government officials from the 1700's and 1800's for Hamilton County/Chattanooga and a Hamill (forgot first name) served as a Registrar. Was your great grandfather a gov't official?

Amy! I am so excited to hear from you... Sounds like we are related. Milo Smith Hamill was my great grandfather. His wife was Anna. Their son Milo Wyrick Hamill lived in South Pittsburg, TN. His son, Charles William Hamill was my dad. He passed away May 7, 2009 at the age of 86. Yes, Daniel Best Hamill and Mary Jones are familiar to me as is Daniel's father Samuel who came from Blount County. He was married to a Catherine Best whose family had come from Holland..Samuel's father was I think David Hamill from Belfast, Ireland. Do your records show that? I would love to meet you and see some of the papers you have or you could call or email me. Did your grandfather put together an extensive family tree?
Do the Chattanooga Hamill's have reunions? I would love to attend one. I am 65, married and moved from Kingston, TN to Augusta, GA in the early 70's.
My phone number is 707 699 6543. email lyndaj1956@gmail.com
Thanks for the exciting news in your message on ancestory.com!!
Lynda Hamill Johnson, a distant cousin

It appears that you only received the second half of my reply. I will try to recreat the first part. (?) My grandfather was Milo Wyrick Hamill. Wyrick was his mother's maiden name. He was raised by and inherited the house from his Aunt Lou and Uncle Charlie Ingersol, who built the house in 1902, I think. Milo's dad was Milo Smith Hamill. Granddad's mother died when he was fairly young and so did a younger sister...of TB. So, his dad raised him, but at the tender age of 12 the two of them and two helpers were on the mountain behind So. Pittsburg hauling logs, when an accident occured and the wagon overturned and killed my Great-grandfather. His aunt and uncle took him in. The house was occupied by our family until my dad inherited it and sold it around 1984.

...sorry didn't finish... My name is Lynda Hamill Johnson. I grew up in Kingston, TN and visited my grandparents frequently. My husband and I live near Augusta, GA in Hephzibah. I have a brother Mike Hamill in Kingston and a sister Debbie Hamill Hemond in Greeneville, TN. Milo married Adeline Gertrude Hmmble of the Humbles of So. Pittsburg. Her brother Milt was the firechief for many years and the firetruck is still named after him. Her brother Jim was a pharmasist and had a drug store on the main street. Milo and Adeline had two children, Loise and Charles William, my dad. They lived in that house all of my dad's life. Milo owned a resturaunt on the main street of So. Pittsburg during the Depression. He was so generous with those who could not pay that he wound up going out of business. Later he was employed with the TVA and didn't retire until his 70's. My dad went to Univ. of Chattanooga. He was a high school and college football star and later after serving in the Marines during WWII he returned to coach football for several years at SPHS. His team was undefeated and untied for 2 years 1949 and 1950, a record that may still be held. When i was about 3 he would let mother and me sit on the bench during games. My granddad is a decendent of a David Hamill from Belfast, Ireland. Recently, my husband Jack and I stopped in So. Pittsburg and had lunch at the Italian resturaunt there. I talked with the owner to see if he knew any history of his building, thinking that it may have been my Grandad's old resturaunt. He introduced me to the mayor who was having lunch there, too. The mayor knew all able my Grandad and Dad. He even made a point of telling me that his dad thought my dad was the best player ever at SPHS. Another tidbit...my grandmother, Adeline taught violin at the home and at the high school, too. I am sorry for my ramblings and that these details are not exactly in the order they occured but I hope this has been of interest. My phone number is 706-699-6543 if you would like to know more. I do not have any original photos of the house, but lots of pictures were taken as we visited and grew up playing in the yard under the pecan tree and tulip poplar tree. We played croquet in the yard, threw the football and hit a baseball around. We loved exploring the cellar, climbing the "secret stairway" leading up from the kitchen to the upstairs. There was also another "secret passageway" leading from the end bedroom upstairs to the next bedroom. My dad slept in the bedroom facing the street upstairs and his older sister, Louise slept in the other one. She married her college sweetheart, Powell McWhirter. They moved to Clearwater, FL and raised 6 children.
My dad inherited the house when my grandad died about 1983. He sold it after a couple of years to a family by the name of Hankey (?). The mayor told me there was a new owner now. I left a small note on the front door when we were there last.

I live in a house in South Pittsburg TN that was originally built by the Hamill family in 1907?. I believe there was a Milo Jr. and a Milo Sr. The name Wyrick pops up too..as well as Humble. I ran into someone on line several years back that provided me with info and stated she had photos of the house in its original build, but I lost contact with her....I would love to be able to find her and get a photo of this house and the history she provided!
I have found that the name Owen Hamill usually shows up in County Louth or County Antrim. Been searching for my Owen Hamill for 12 years but he doesn't want to be found! If I find anything else about Philip I'll let you know.

Robert Hamill and Isabella McCready

This couple moved with several children to Greenwich, NY and some family members probably worked at the Dunbarton Mills branch there. John McCune lived with them as if he were a relative or son-in-law.

I am trying to follow McCune/Doaks nearby from about the same area of Co. Down, Ireland. Are the McCunes related? Were they from Co. Armagh?

Re: Hamill's of NYC

I know this is a dated post, but I just came across it. My great grandfather was one Thomas J. Hamill, born May, 1852. Both New York and Ireland are listed as his places of birth. He married a woman named Ellen Hanley in 1880. There is a census record from 1880 listing Thomas and Ellen Hamil, married that year. They had children named Mary, Bernard, Eleanor(aka Ellen, aka Loretta, aka Lauretta),Michael, Peter and Thomas, Jr. My Thomas died in the Bronx in 1905 from pneumonia. None of the sons ever married. Loretta was my grandmother. There was a Patrick Hamill that lived in brooklyn on Claremont Ave that they would visit often. My mother only knew them as Mr. and Mrs. Hamill. Patrick's children had names almost identical to Thomas's kids. Patrick owned an Auto parts store. Thomas's death certificate lists his parents as Henry Hamill and Mary Duffy. I too am stumped as to where he was truly born. Hope your trip to ireland went well.

Re: Hamills of Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan

Hello David,

I just read your thread. I'm sorry that it took me nearly four years to see it!

As this thread is about the Hamill's I am not sure if any of us can be of much assistance to you, but I will tell you what I know.

The Owen McMahon of Castleblaney that we referred to in this thread was my great-great-great grandfather. I do not know his date of birth , but his daughter, my great-great grandmother Mary Catherine was born in 1876.

You estimate that Ross McMahon was born in 1833. So unless my great-great-great grandfather fathered two children 43 years apart, it is doubtful that the Owen McMahon you speak of is the same man that was mentioned in this thread.

If I were a guessing woman, I would say that "your" Owen McMahon was either an uncle, or perhaps even the father of "our" Owen McMahon... and that Ross was perhaps a brother or cousin of my great-great-great grandfather.

Let me know what you find!
Bridget Hamill Carbonara

Thanks for the reply. Yes, this is the same person, and it was reported in the Brooklyn Eagle at the time. I'm sure the money was a rumor - he was my gg grandfather, and there is no evidence of any wealth! I have him probably coming to NY in 1856, but before that is still a mystery. You didn't happen to find his parents or siblings by any chance?

I think this is the Hamill I was checking on once and it seems to me he and his wife were estranged at the time of his accident. They reconciled before he died. I also seem to remember that as he lay dying he learned that a relative out in the Midwest left him a large sum of money.I spent some time trying to find the rich relative but I kept hitting brick walls.
