Connie, my name is Austin Worthington, and I noticed that your gr.gr. grandparents are John Hamman and Margaret Evans. Well, you can imagine my pleasure: they're my gr.gr.gr.gr.gr.gr.grandparents (apparently there's a large generation gap between us). But, just so you know, I have plenty of information on this lineage on geni.com, and if you ever want to talk just e-mail me at ea12394@yahoo.com . :) Hope to hear from you soon!

Looking for info on the Hamman line that included Sarah Ann born about 1831 in Ohio and married John Musser. She lived most of her adult life in northeasstern Indiana--Dekalk and Stueben counties. Their children were Amanda Musser who married John Mortimer Brown. The sons were Emanuel, William and Edwin. Seems to have been many Musser families in this area. Thanks for any info you may have.

Re: George Hamman

Pete,
I have some information that you might already have but might still need:

HAMMAN, George H., farmer, residing in the village of Meredosia, Morgan County, Ill., was born in Pike County, Ohio, September 12, 1840, the son of Henry and Barbara (Keberth) Hamman, the father being a farmer. The family came to Morgan County, Ill., in 1867, and occupied a rented farm for two or three years, when George H. Hamman moved to Cass County, Ill., and farmed there four years. He then returned to Morgan County, and for thirty-one years, with his son, Edward, operated the splendid farm of the late George Graham, situated near the bluffs east of Meredosia. In 1894 Mr. Hamman moved to Kansas and three years later returned to Meredosia, where, with his wife, he now resides in a pleasant home. He has been a successful business man and is classed among the well-to-do residents of the community.

Mr. Hamman was married, in 1864, to Lena Fry, and of this union two sons and two daughters survive. The wife and mother died in October, 1885. In 1897 Mr. Hamman was married in Coffee County, Kans., to Margaret Quelch, who owns some valuable town property in Meredosia. Mr. Hamman and his family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Besides Edward, mentioned above, the other children are: Lizzie, wife of D. E. Curry; Mary, wife of George Butcher, and Amos, a practicing physician at Longbeach, Cal. In politics Mr. Hamman is a stanch Republican.

Hi Doris,
That "rachel2127" is actually Ben Hammonds! :) Anyway, that would great if would finally recruit a James Hamman descendant into the YDNA project. Family Tree DNA has a great special starting today for the next two weeks -- a 37-marker YDNA and a mtDNA test, all for only $119!
Cheers,
Brian

Hello, Amanda, I am Doris Rose, desc of John Hamman, brother of Valentine Hamman who md Mary Ann Alexander. Some years ago you were in contact with Linda Kaye Cope Lanier re this family as well as the Betsy Hamman Lacy famiily who migrated to Missouri at same time as Valentine Hamman. I have the info that you sent to Kaye; just want to let you know that the Phillip Hamman Family Re-Union ov 2010 will be held in Missouri with trips to Valentine's home area. There are still Lacy cousins there... recently another of our Hamman cousins learned of a living descendant of Valentine & Mary Ann's who lives in Florida. We are still trying to get in touch with her......... if you want this lineage, please contact me at rose0303@att.net, directly. Many thanks for sharing your information on Valentine Hamman and his wife Mary Ann Alexander's family! Doris Rose
Tom, We have been everywhere digging up famiily since I have talked to you. We went all over Iowa, Indiana, Pennsylvania, etc. Every year we go for 2-3 weeks searching family lines and have found some amazing things. We did visit the graves of Leander and Mary Hamman as well as the Curls graves. They are buried in a private cemetery just north of Des Moines and we were able to drive right to it with the help of some information that listed the locations of 3 cemeteries that could be the one. I haven't been very active with search lately so I am a little rusty on recall about all the other stuff. We did find some Hutzell info so I will have to dig it out to share with you. I did find a place where my two lines Hamman/Saylor lines joined up back a couple of generations. Contact me at elainechristensen@sbcglobal.net and we can share more Info.

Greetings! My daughter married Ben Hamman, son of Frank Hamman. Frank's father was Glenn C. Hamman married to Margaret McCoy (wife # 2?). My son-in-law's father, Frank, died when he was young and Grandfather Glenn died in 1989.

They were all from the Wichita, KS area. Glenn died in Laclede Co. Missouri.

I've finished most of my family's geneaology at least as far as we can go....so now I'm turning to my son-in-law's and "yet-to-be" grandchildren's ancestry.
Hi,
I have been reading all of the messages for Abraham Hamman and thought I would tell you what I have found in Allen county Library in Indiana--Book titled "Newspaper Abstracts-1802-1805, 1809" on p. 38 under Saturday, 4 January 1806-- says "Notice is hereby given to all those whom it may concern, that I am about to leave this state in 30, or 38 days, and therefore all persons that have any demands against me are requested to come forward with their accounts for settlement, and receive their pay from me. Abraham Hamman" Some one had said that it was unusual for Anne to travel alone in this time period to marry Nicholas Carter- I beleive she was with her family. Abrahm is my 4th great grandfather through son Abraham Jr. and his son William Florence, Coleen

Hello, I am looking for my grandmother's birth family. Her birth father was a Herman M. Hamman, who might also have gone by Bert. He was born about 1885 in Rockford, Indiana and then moved to Nebraska. He might have died around 1918.. I don't know where he died, would assume Nebraska. He married a Carrie Lee. does anyone have any information on this person. My home email address is fritzfamily@centurytel.net. Please let me know. Thank you, Heather

I have found out more information. My grandmother's father might have gone by "Bert Hammon" instead of Herman Hamman. I have also found some information that leads me to believe he might have died in 1918, which would explain why the kids were put up for adoption. Anyone with information I would greatly appreciate a reply.
Hello,
I am researching the Hamman/Hammon families of Richland County, OH. There are two different ones that arrived in the 1820 and 1830s -- the former settling mostly in southern Richland County (Worthington Twp.) and the latter settling more in northern Richland County (Franklin and Blooming Grove Townships). I have the the family of Worthington Township traced back to the early 1600s of Lachen-Speyerdorf, Germany..... The family that settled in Blooming Grove has been much more difficult to trace but I now have them back to the early 1700s of America... Anyway, I would like to help you trace your husband's Hamman ancestry back as far as possible. Can you please tell me when/where Harry Hamman was born? If you'd prefer, feel free to email me at brianhamman@yahoo.com
Thanks,
brian Hamman
Re: ABRAHAM HAMMAN

Hello,
I recently discovered thru YDNA testing that I am related to this Abraham Hamman (1754-1844). I spent the last couple months gathering any clue I could find on the origins of Abraham Hamman and his parents. Here is a summary of the facts:
1) We know from Abraham's Rev War Pension file that he was born in New Jersey in around 1754.
2) Abraham says in his Rev War pension file that his father used the "German language" in their family bible.
3) Thomas Hamman emigrated from Lachen-Speyerdorf, Germany, in 1730 and settled on the border of what is now Bucks and Montgomery Counties in Pennsylvania. There are records of Thomas Hamman in the New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church during the 1730s.
4) There are no records of Thomas anywhere (as far as I am aware) between 1736 and 1754, when he shows up in the records for the Tohickon Reformed Church in 1754 Bucks County, PA. Thomas dies in 1755 and I recently ordered a copy of his Will. It is quite possible that Thomas Hamman lived in NJ between 1736 and 1754....
5) We know that Thomas had at least two sons: George and John. A) George was married by 1756 and it is quite possible that he is the father of Abraham Hamman (I have some evidence to support). B) Conversely, John Hamman was not married until 1760 and is therefore NOT likely the father of Abraham Hamman. Furthermore, John Hamman left an extensive Will in 1805 VA and there is no mention of a son named Abraham (or his brothers Isaac or Jacob).
6) I have other pieces of info (and more coming) that support that Abraham Hamman was a son of George Hamman, and especially agree that Abraham Hamman was a grandson of Thomas Hamman the immigrant from Lachen-Speyerdorf. There are a couple of families that followed the same migratory path as Thomas Hamman and his descendants, from Germany to PA to NJ to MD to VA and even to GA.
7) John had sons named Thomas and George, and those two have male Hamman/Hammond descendants still living today that we might be able to recruit into our YDNA project. If they match our Hamman line, I will conclude without a doubt that our Hamman line came from Lachen-Speyerdorf.
Cheers,
Brian Hamman

Re: Gus H hamman family from Lavaca County, Tx

I found Gus in the 1900-1930 Census records for Lavaca Co., TX. In 1900-1930, he always says his mother was born in Germany. However, he is inconsistent with regards to where his father was born: 1900=Sweden, 1910=Germany, 1920=Switzerland, 1930=Switzerland. I also have his death record where he says his father was born in Switzerland. Similar story for his 3 brothers (Otto, Louie, Edward) that fluctuate between these 3 countries regarding where their father was born. In their death records, Otto says his dad was born in Sweden, both Gus and Edward say Swizterland, and Louis says Germany!! One thing that IS consistent in the death records is that they all say their parents were Emil Hamman and Minnie Meyer....

Next, I found Emil Hammann (spelled that way) in the 1880 Census for nearby Goliad Co., TX, with his first 3 sons (Louis was born in 1881). Importantly, Emil says in 1880 that he and his parents were born in Swizterland. I find no other trace of Emil after 1880, but just sent out a few queries and might find out something else new...

So it kind of looks like your Hammann family came from Switzerland (really unusual for this surname), but it still remains to be proven. Let me know if you are interested in any of the documents/details that I have about your early Hamman ancestry.

Brian Hamman
brianhamman@yahoo.com
Re: ABRAHAM HAMMAN

Dear all,
Just wanted to follow up on my last message regarding Abraham Hamman. We recruited a bona fide descendant of the Thomas Hamman (b. 1700 Lachen-Speyerdorf) into our Y-DNA project and he does NOT match the Abraham Hamman descendant. Instead, he matches all of the different Hamman lines of Lachen-Speyerdorf. Therefore, Abraham Hamman does NOT descend from the Hamman clan of Lachen-Speyerdorf. Here is my website that shows all the Hamman Y-DNA results and patrilineages in our project:
http://www.brian-hamman.com/Hamman_Y_chromosomeResults.htm

We are therefore still stuck wondering where in Germany, Abraham Hamman's father was born. We do know with fairly good certainty that Abraham's parents were John and Eve Hamman. Abraham Hamman is listed next to John in the 1770 tax records for Loudoun County, VA, but only for that one year. I am pretty sure this is the same Johannes "John" Hamman living in Frederick Co., MD, from early 1760s to ~1776. We also know that Abraham Hamman had a brother named Isaac who was born in Frederick Co., MD, in 1763. A John and Eve Hamman buy and sell land in Rockingham Co., VA, during the same time Abraham lived there (~1778-1785), before they all moved to Georgia.

Prior to 1763 Frederick Co., MD, we only know that Abraham Hamman was born in NJ in around 1754 and that his father was German. I have little clues where our Hamman clan lived while in NJ. Our Hamman family is not found in any of the readily available German Church records that I've searched in NJ, which are Lutheran and Reformed Churches. My ancestor, Henry Hamman, was likely a younger brother (or first cousin) of Abraham, and Henry belonged to the German Church of the Brethren. Abraham's putative father, John Hamman, attended the Lutheran Church in Woodsboro, MD, which is close to the Beaver Dam COB. Many of the Beaver Dam COB members came there from the large COB in Hunterdon Co., NJ. Unfortunately, the COB records are very scanty, to say the least, and none exist for 1700s Beaver Dam COB!

So in the end, it could be that our only hope to figure the German town of origin for our Hamman clan is by Y-DNA testing. If we match a Hamman(n) from a proven town in Germany, we will have an excellent idea about where we came from.

Feel free to contact me if you have any further clues or insight. You should always be able to reach me at brianhamman@yahoo.com

Best wishes,
Brian Hamman

According to Glenn Hamman's 1989 obit, he was born 13-Apr-1909 in Winfield, KS. His obit also says that his parents were William and May (Martin) Hamman. Indeed, I found this family in the 1910 Census for Winfield, Cowley Co., KS. Based on the 1910, 1920, and 1930 census records, William was born in Ohio in around 1867 or 1868, and both of his parents were also born in Ohio. Between the 1870 and 1880 census records, it seems that this William Hamman was a son of either the 1) Jacob Hamman (b. 1839) found in the 1880 Census for Piatt Co., IL or 2) Daniel Hamman (b. 1845) found in Logan Co., IL in the 1880 Census. I believe that Daniel and Jacob were cousins; I know that Daniel Hamman's father was Franz Hammann born in Lachen-Speyerdorf but I'm not sure about Jacob Hamman's father off the top of my head.... This is indeed Brian Zahn's Hamman line so you should get in contact with him.
Brian
I am also in contact with Dr. Bly and feel that his chapter on the Hamman families in America is a top quality piece of work.
You are welcome, Tom. My understanding is the Hammann is one of the most common surnames today in Lachen-Speyerdorf? I've also been told that there might be several completely different Hammann lines there today. In fact, there is no proven link between Thomas hamman and his contemporary, Jacob Hamman (b. 1706), who immigrated to America in the late 1740s -- those two hamman lines are very possibly not even related....
Hello Jennifer. Guess I ought to check I here too.

I have been in contact with Donna in Pueblo, Colorado and am aware of your Gen sheets (NICE JOB!!!). Donna hooks in to your line thru Jacob Hamman (b. 1795)
Kris (see above msg you posted to) and I are from Jacob's brother, George A. Hamman (b. 1797) Sadly both of our lines are thru females so I am not able to help in the DNA project. There is a male cousin, Alvan Charles Hamman (b. 1904 in Kansas) who has disappeared off my family radar and I am hoping for a clue to where he went in the 1940 census when it becomes available. He is the only hope my line has.

I haven't been able to push back further than George A. Hamman altho I concluded that Balthasar Hamman was probably a grandfather to my George a couple of years ago, when I first started. No positive proof though.

Would love to send you my line for referrence and hear of anything new you may have as of Aug 2008.

Robin Landgren
Dlandgren@aol.com

I am including the following in case anyone else wanders in with a connection.

Descendants of George A.

The Hamilton News (Hamilton, Steuben County, Indiana)
06 August 1915 - page 1

DANIEL HAMMAN DIES

The community was shocked Tuesday morning when the word was received that Dan Hamman had passed away. Mr. Hamman has been in poor health for a year or more but has been around all the time and was in town Monday. Monday evening he retired in seemingly usual health. About three o’clock Tuesday morning he arose and went down stairs; after waiting a few moments other members of the family went down to see if anything was wrong and found him on the floor dead. The body was taken to Eaton Rapids, Mich., his former home, for burial, Wednesday.

OBITUARY

Daniel Hamman was born in Franklin township, DeKalb Co., Ind., April 26, 1853. His death took place at his residence near Hamilton, Ind., Aug. 3, 1915, making his age 62 years, 3 months and 7 days.

His first marriage was with Malinda Oberlin Jan. 1, 1874. To this union were born two children: Henry Marshal and Gertrude May Meerrit Hamman, both surviving their father. Besides these, there surviue him four brothers and four sisters, of whom one sister and three brothers live in or near Hamilton, two sisters and one brother reside in Wichita, Kans.

His second marriage was with Mrs. Nancy M. Gall, of Hamilton, Ind., on Thanksgiving day 1910, whom he leaves to mourn his departure.

He was brought up in the Lutheran faith and teaching in which fellowship he continued until death.

The deceased has been in broken health for a year or more, yet generally able to do light work up to the hour of his death, which came to him almost instantly.

Mr. Hamman was a man of a very kind social nature, with a kind word for all. He will be missed by a large circle of friends.

The funeral services were held from his residence near Hamilton, conducted by L. W. Spayd after which the local Grange, of which he was a member, had charge. From thence he was taken for interment to Eaton Rapids, Mich.

CARD OF THANKS

We wish to thank all who in any way assisted us during our recent bereavement.
Mrs. Nancy Hamman and Children

The Fort Wayne Daily News (Fort Wayne, Indiana)
12 August 1915 - page 5

Mrs. Rhoda Houlton accompanied her sister, Mrs. Dan Hamman, with the remains of her husband to Eton Rapids, Mich., Wednesday, as did Gilbert, Doc, Allen.

Transcribed by O. E. Hamman Jr.
