When posting my query I noticed your name of Pearson.
Are you somehow related to Georgiana Pearson (abt 1855)who married Peter Knapp(abt 1842). They were from Ohio and went to Washington and both are buried there. They had a daughter May I think is her name. Can't seem to find out what happen to her. Looking for Peter Knapp's diary that he wrote during the civil war. Hoping it will give me clues as to what happen to his mother Margaret (Jones) Knapp.
Any info would greatly be appreciated. Raida L.

I am looking for the name of the father and descendents of 4 Hammel brothers who were born in New York between 1858 and 1868. They are on the 1870 census with their mother, Margaret. John age 12, Mattie age 10, Adam age 8, Lewis age 4, and their sister Mary (my grandmother) age 1. I believe that Mattie is a nickname for Martin. The surname on the census is HOMMELL. The spelling from other records is HAMMEL or HAMEL. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am looking for information on Joseph V. Hammel b. 6/10/1869 in possibly Germany or Baltimore. He was a cigar maker and seemed to appear out of nowhere in Baltimore in 1886. He married Anna Marie Bremmer and on the marriage register his last hame is listed as "Hummel". He died Feb 22, 1903 and is buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Baltimore City. He had 3 children, one stillborn: Joseph 1898-1898, Henry Joseph 1903-1949 and Emma Alvina 1900-1927.

Hello Gady,
My name is Sean Hammel with family being from Oklahoma for several generations now. What I do know is my grandfather was Raymond Frederick. His Father's name was Frederick, Grandfather John, and I am inclined to believe his Great Grandfather was Julius (immigrated to U.S. in or around 1850 at the age of 19-20. I do know that our family line traveled south from Indiana and settled in Oklahoma. What I don't know is ultimately where my immigrant relatives came from (current burial site is Burchfield Cemetery in Greer Township, Warrick County, Indiana). I have always been told it would not be a surprise to find out our ancestry was Jewish; however, was raised in Christian environment. My wife and I have been drawn to raise our family in a Torah observant environment, and curious for this strong draw! It is this draw that has prompted me to search out my ancestry. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to continue my search?

Re: John Hugh Hammel, b. 1844 in OH, m. Susanna Varner

It is possible we may have a common ancestor in the name Hammel. I first found Susanna Hammel in Peoria County, Hallock Township; pre Civil War. She is most probably buried at Hardin, MO. The Peoria, IL census incorrectly used her last name as "McCormisk" It should have been "McCormick".
She was my G-G Grandmother.

In your searches, do you see a Susanna Hammel or soundex of Susanna Hammel anywhere in the same time frame?

The following is published elsewhere:

My ancestor, William S. McCormick was married to Susanna Hammel/Hamel/Hamal. They may be found in the Hallock Township, Peoria County, IL 1860 census with the misspelled name "McCormisk". McCormick came from Kings County (according to a paid researcher; I have doubts now about all New York City Family information), Brooklyn, NY. Susana is listed as coming from Illinois.

Williams' Father, also William S., is said to have immigrated from Ireland. He married a Caroline (1813-??)from NH (no last name given) workeed for his Daughter Carolines Husband, Abner Richards at Richards New York City Shoe Factory as a Mechanic(??). Two of their Female children (Caroline Richards nee McCormick and Sister Elizabeth D. McCormick 1851 - 1889)) are found in various New York documents(Brooklyn and Manhattan). and the New York Times.

The Son, "William S." from the first paragraph moved to ??? then to Hallock Township, Peoria County, IL and later to Hardin, Ray county, Missouri and he was my Great Great Grandfather. His Son married Eve Dronenberg of Norborne, Carrol County (Eve Dronenbergs Father William was from Frederick Mariland and served in the 15th Cav (Reeves)Confederate as a Blacksmith and Trooper. Eve's Son; my Grandfather "Henry Roy" was a Railroad Fireman in Kansas City until he lost a leg in a train yard collision at or around Kansas City Stockyards. He later owned a Tavern at 6th & Central in KCK until his death c. 1941. My Father Charles E. McCormick was in Army Basic Training at Jefferson Barracks, St Louis Missouri at that time so Roy must have died aroound February-March-April 1941. Dad (Charles E.) died two years ago. According to my Sister Maureen the name on Dad's Birth Certificate is "Joseph". Dad said it was common in those days for Doctors to put their own first name on a babies birth certificate. He also had a Brother Rob and a Sister Geraldine Jackson nee McCormick. Both are dead. The Jacksons, my Cousins, live in the area from Olathe Kansas to Ft. Scott Kansas. The information in this paragraph and the next I am 100% certain of, since it is recent family history.

The remains of most of my Hardin McCormick Family washed away in a flood some years ago. As far as I know I am the last living male in my line. Faye Johnson of Hardin is said to be a relative and was living there the last time I was in Hardin +- 5 to 7 years ago.

Mike McCormick
Legal Name: Charles Edward McCormick II
Major, U.S. Army (Retired)
b: 2 August, 1947
West Bend, WI

Regards,
Mike

Gottfried & Louisa, Wilhelmine Hammel Germany to Wisconsin

Hello all, I am researching my Hammel family and one in particular is Wilhelmina Gustina Hammel. She was born 30 Jan 1830 in Germany and died 16 Jan 1902 in Oakland, WI.

her parents were Gottfried (b. unknown & d. before 1882 in Germany) and Louisa (b. about 1812 in Germany, d. somewhere in America).

Wilhelmine married Christian Liebenow in Germany sometime before 1861 when their son Ferdinand was born. The family of Christian, Wilhelmine and Ferdinand Liebenow, along with Louisa Hammel, immigrated and arrived in Baltimore on Oct 15, 1882.

From Baltimore they moved to Pittsburgh briefly where Ferdinand Liebenow married Augusta Koch and three days later Christian, Wilhelmine, Ferdinand and Augusta came to Wisconsin. I haven't found any record of Louisa Hammel being in Wisconsin so I assume she may have died in Pittsburgh or somewhere along the way.

Any help you could give to help fill in the gaps would be great. thanks!

-Jade Schmitt

thank you so much for all of your help. i checked out the census records. i am trying now to pinpoint uncle green hill's correct regiment. you don't know how much it would mean to me to have a copy of the picture of uncle green. just when ever you get a chance. it has taken now almost 15 years to finally figure out how he was related. uncle floyd had said he was his uncle. now i can connect the dots. it will mean a lot to my mama back in Mississippi. it is really a small world. once again i appreciate everything you have done. if you need my address, just send to let me know. thank you, scott

thank you, i think we are 3rd cousins. that puts to rest that mexico story. do you know what year green was born in? i guess we will never know about jacob. i assume he came from old prussia. a lot of hammel or hammill came from that part of europe. i can't go back past my 3rd great grandfather on the rodgers side. it is frustrating sometimes. i have been all over lincoln and copiah county and also can come up with nothing going back before jacob. did him and julia have any other kids beside augustus?

First of all, I was married to one of your cousins, David who died in 1985. I have only had roadblocks where Jacob is concerned. I found two in California about the time of the Civil War who fit the criteria, ie age and came from GA. One was a merchant the other a trader.
The soldier who went to Mexico was Capt. William and Charity Garrett Butler's son James, who died on board ship before 1854. He was Leander's brother.
I found that Civil War Info also, just not sure which one, in 1860 Green was in Copiah county, MS so he probably enlisted from that area. I have nothing on Hammills in the Civil war since I only have back to Jacob, he was declared dead by Julia when she received a legacy from her grandmother Hill around 1865. All other entries were born afterwards other than Augustus and he was too young to go to war, he was born in 1857.

thanks julienne, that helps. have you had any other luck on finding more on jacob? My mama is peggy hammill matthews. i had her call aunt lottie a couple of years ago, but she don't remember nothing abou that pic. is there any way you could send me a copy? was green hill in the civil war or was his sons? i remember uncle floyd saying that he was in the ms calvary. i have found 3 green hill's. one was in the 1st ms state troopers, the 2nd was in the 11th ms calvary, and 3rd was in the 12th ms calvary. floyd had menttioned that he had gone down to mexico after the war and died. he was quite old back then so i don't know how much he actually remembered. i am in school out here in california so i am not able to do much research by foot. i was wondering do you know of any hammill that were kind to us were in the any ms regiments during the civil war.

Scott I answered last night but it didn't send. Leander/Leender C.Butler and Green Hill had five children, Mary B., Julia A., Amelia, George W., and Green JR. All were born in Alabama, probably around Autauga County. I saw that picture at Floyd and Lottie's also. I have wondered about who has it now. I have a photograph of it we made long ago.Green was a very handsome young man. Floyd told me he died at Yorktown, VA so I have tried to find records of his death but have not been successful. I found him on the 1860 Census only. George I have tracked from 1850 till 1900, he moved to Louisiana between 1880 and 1900. Amelia also went to La. and was still alive in 1910. Mary B. was still alive in 1880 Jones County GA, she married and never went to MS. I have tracked Julia in 1850, 1860, Copiah Co. then 1880, and 1900 Lincoln Co., MS, couldn't find her in 1870. I hope this helps you. Julie

I am Wendy, Dan and Andrew's mother. I see her e-address comes up instead of mine. Their dad was David Hammill, grandfather Cecil Hammill, the youngest child of Augustus O. and Elizabeth.. I remember your mother but i'm not sure which Hammill she belongs to, I don't have all the family names in my program. Give me your line and I'll see how you are related.
Augustus had an older sister Tallula born in Feb 1849 in Alabama who married James Ellzey before 1879 in MS. She is on the 1850 Census in Copiah Co with her grandmother Leander, who was referred to as a man, and her mother Julia. Lots of descrepencies on that Census. Tallula has a descendant in Texas who is also researching and hitting brick walls for Jacob.

The James Garrett Butler who did die at sea was also one of your relatives being that he was Julia's uncle.
You do know that Julia was buried under the incorrect name ? On her stone her name was given as Judy, she's buried beside Augustus. The stones were cut and placed long after she died in 1907, Augustus died in 1931 and Margaret Elizabeth " Lizzie" Reed Hammill died in 1948. The stones are alike so I'm guessing they were set in 1948 or later.

I found several Jacobs who stemmed from Prussia and followed them for years, they all had families in other parts of the country, one even in Ohio .

I'll either have to find the negatives for the Green Hill pictures and make you a copy or have someone scan it for me so i can send it via e-mail. I have too much going on now to do it but will be able to after June rolls around. He listed his age as 28 in 1860. Go to Census year 1860, put in his name, and Copiah Co., MS. You'll get the page containing Julia age 36, George W. 30, Green 28, and an Aunt Susan Butler 40. Down at the bottom of the page and the following page is the family Tallula married in to. I havve no idea where the children were in 1860.
Julie

Hello, Carol.

I found your 2003 posting regarding Robert Frank Hammel on the Hammel message board of rootsweb.com. You mention his father might be named Frank and born about 1931. Did you ever locate him? I ask because I am trying to locate a man of that same name, who might have been related to Frank Hammel/Hammell who had been in Winnipeg in 1930. He may have had an aunt? named Mary Margaret, who married W. Frederick Bliss in 1939.

I'm trying to help someone find a relative of the Frank Hammel/Hammell who married Florence Emily Chewter, age 23, in Winnipeg in 1930. She then died in 1933 in Winnipeg. It is not known if they had chidlren. The address given when she died is the same address in Winnipeg of an older F. E. Hammell (thought to be Frank Edward) whose young daughter Phobe died in 1920. Did he also have a son named Frank who might have been the Frank who marrried Florence Emily Chewter in 1930? Could they have had a son born between 1930 and 1933 before Florence died? Frank Edward Hammell's daughter Mary Margaret married in 1939, her parents having died by that year. Her marriage is from a newspaper notice. It's not known if there were others in the family. These are just some questions. The basic thing I'm trying to find is a relative who would have known this family. And we have a couple of newspaper accounts of a Robert Frank Hammel/Hammell who was in Alberta in the 1950's, wondering if he could be a relative of the above family.

Can you please let me know if this family is familiar to you. Or if you don't know of this Winnipeg family, can you just let me know what you are able about the Robert Frank Hammel you mention. I can hopefully then decide if he might be linked in some way to this Winnipeg family or not.

Diana Gendron
I am looking for information on Hammels as well -- from Odessa, Russia, moved to North Dakota in early 1900's, then to Saskatchewan, and then on to Medicine Hat, Alberta. My brother in law is a descendant of this family, and I have been researching his tree for his three boys, however have not gotten very far. My Hammel that I am working back from is Anna Mary, her parents are Anna Schlachter (1879-1958) and Simon Hammel (1875-1927). Simon's parents were Leonard Hammel (b: 1844) and Margaretha Weiber (b:1845). Coincidentally enough, while living in the prairies, Anna Mary found another import from Odessa Russia (Hagel's) -- what are the odds of that!!!! (Actually, I know better than to question this sort of thing -- I've been working on family trees for too long now to know it maybe isn't so strange!!!).
Any help would be great. Perhaps we can figure out this whole Hammel thing!!
I'm researching about a couple, Max A.HAMMEl and her wife Emma HERZ (born March 1881) lived in Cook county, IL. They married on 1 1Feb 1907, I don't kow if they had children. Maybe Max died young becuase in 1968 when died her brother Walter HERZ, Emma is called "Emma Hammel WITTE", so she remarried in some year. Can you control USA Census of years 1910, 1920 and 1930 or other resources to make clear about them? Thanks

JAKE HAMMEL OR J.H. HAMMEL; Meigs Co, TN 1910 Census

...The 1910 Meigs Co TN Census lists a "Jake" HAMMEL or Hamond, with wife, Mary L....children, Elizabeth (born 1902) Wm. Rufus (born 1905), Sarah Jane (born 1907) and Martin Luther (born 1909). Also on adjacent page is a Barney HAMMEL. Barney was thought to have a brother named James....and I am wondering if this "Jake" could be James??? Surname could be HAMMEL, HAMMON, HAMMOND. Initials are found to be J.H....

...."Jake" could be either a nickname or mispronounced and/or misrecorded in the census. It could be "James.." BUT his intials were J.H. No record can be found other than the 1910 Meigs Co Census. He was farmer and did odd jobs..couldn't read or write. Neither could wife, Mary L.

.....Would like to communicate with anyone researching the HAMMEL surname in E. TN area around Meigs, McMinn, Rhea Co. TN from 1900 to 1914 era. This was second marriage for both "Jake, (James) " and Mary L......would like to find out who his first wife was and if any children existed from that marriage. Also want to know maiden name of J.H.'s ("Jake or James") second wife, Mary L.???? The Census says her father was born in GA, Mother in TN and Mary was born in TN. "Jake" was listed as born in TN as were his parents.

....Any information on HAMMEL IN E. TN would be welcomed. Possible they migrated to TN from another close by state.

.....Also interested in any JACKSON who married into the HAMMEL line.

.... Please contact me at trendsa@bellsouth.net ..... Thank you.

Yes, they are my family on my dad's side. Martha J. is my G-G-Grandmother. Have never been able to find Julia's maiden name or anything beyond Philip's dad whom I think was named Jacob.
