Not sure if they came from Germany of parents came from Germany.
Balsor had a son, George, b. 1881, Penleton Co. married Elizabeth Daggy - could be a Lizzie. Their children: George II 2/2/1884, Jacob, Henry, Adam, Samual, Mary Hammer Mauzy, Elizabeth Bettie Mauzy Rexrode, John, Balsor II, susan Hammer Mauzy.
Interesting that George named 3 of his sons, George, Henry and Jacob!! So did Balsor #1 have 3 brothers of was it his grandson Balsor #2 that had the 3 brothers named George, Henry and Jacob????
We need some information posted here on these Hammers. All I know is George married Lizzie!
There are Hammers buried at St. Cecelia Cemetery in Independence (Kenton Co) and also further north some Hammers buried at Holy Guardian Angel Cemetery in Sandfordtown (also Kenton Co).....I feel these are related. Any descendants out there who can help us with this family?
My connection is with the Egans/Agens who migrated from Ireland.....They were cousins of my Fahey family......They married in Kenton Co. and eventually lived in the Cincinnati area. Please HELP!
akunkel@tds.net

Looking for any info on John Hammer DOB unknown who married Margaret "Maggie" Mulligan who was divorced from Coleman Sowerby sometime after 1900. John died before 1925 since Margaret's Death Certificate states she was the widow of John Hammer and she is shown as HOH in the 1920 New Orleans, Orleans, LA census with her daughter and father. Recent documents prove that the daughter Pearl Hammer who died in 1924 was actually a daughter by the first husband. Have not been able to find any documentation to show whether John Hammer adopted Pearl or not. Margaret and Pearl are buried in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans, LA.

suggestions for finding Hammer Family

I found one possible email match by searching for "Romy Hammer" at google.com:

Romy.Hammer@studiosus.com

If you haven't already googled the other family member names, you might try that.

It might be helpful to be prepared with approximate dates (for example, when did Horst and Inge die) and the city/town from which Brigette came and the city/town where Maria died. You might contact the mayor's office in those towns and ask for assistance locating Maria's grandchildren, or post a query at that area's genealogy message board asking for help with directory lookups or even locating Maria's obituary.

Good luck with your research.

Mary

You can email me at savannah109@gmail.com if you want. I have recently found some information on the FamilySearch pilot program on the family. How are we related and what kind of information do you have? I have gone back to Dominikus Hammer and Melchior Walz but I am lacking some dates.

Yes, you have it exactly right--Adam was my grandfather, my father was Joe. I have a few pictures as there was a fire in the 30s and they lost all of their pictures except for a few that are with other relatives. I do have a wonderful picture of Adam and Clementine when they were very young--a copy I got from an uncle. How far back does your information go? I have some handwritten information from someone in the Hammer family that I am working with right now--perhaps it is yours--about 15 sheets on legal sized paper and copies of the death certificates of Louis and Mary Hammer and Johanna Oser. If you could use my email--savannah109@gmail.com-- I can give you more information.

Re: Eva Hammer

Hi, Eva Hammer and Christopher Brockman were my grandparents. They are both deceased now. Eva Hammer was married to Edward Hammer. He was my mothers father. I think that they had about 7 children. He died when he was about 33. She then married my grandfather Chris Brockman where they had about 5 more children. They lived in an old farmhouse and then moved to Wyandotte Mochigan, other plaes they lived were Dundee and Monroe Michigan. To describe him, he was about 6'8". He was so tall he had to bend over to walk through doorways. My grandmother Eva Hammer Brockman was quite the difference, she very short. I think that once they got married is when they lived in the old farmhouse and lived there for many years. It was going to be condemned so they bought a house in Wyandotte Michigan. He was a very quiet man, stayed to himself, no mattter how the house was filled with ccompany. About once a month, Grandpa would kill about 6 chickens and clean them and Grandma would fry them all up and set the table for a big Sunday dinner. She was one of the greatest cooks. Everything she cooked there was no leftovers and she did this every month. She was very short and I mean short especially compared to Grandpa, but she was a bad diabetic. Grandpa only had one lung, but he got pneumonia in it and that is when he died. Grandma lived on quite a few years after he died. I used to spend all my summers with them. My mother never wantged me so she would take us there and say that I could stay a week and she would be back wwith some clean clothes for me, but she never did come back until it was time for school to start. I didn't caare, as she abused me a lot and I knew that at Grandma and Grandpas that I would not get yelled or beat on. I have a lot of great memories about them, they are nice memories because like I said, they were good to me, I didn't have to be afraid of being abused there. Grandpa's main companion was this pet snake that everytime he would go in the back yard and sit down on this tree stump, the snake would come out and crawl up Grandpa's let and keep crawling until he got to the top of his head and he would just curl up and lay theree until Grandpa would start to get up to go in the house, then the snake would cawl back down him and go back to where he nested until the next time Grandpa came out. He was a man of very few words, but he knew how to put you in your place. He was also a grreat by the hand neeedle and thread seamstress. He could stitch something up and it would last longer than if you used a sewing machine. I don't know any of you or when you were in his life, but I hope that you too have some fond memories of both of them.

I have just come across your message on Ancestry.com dated 2000 and believe we might have a connection. My files consist of an Ernst J. Hammer born in Germany who came to this country (don't know when); married a woman named Martha in Illinois; then went to Canada where two daughters were born; third child (a son) was born in Wisconsin; last son born in Colorado. In 1920 the family appears on the Nebraska census in Webster county. Ernst's occupation is listed as a minister.

If any of this fits, I would love to hear from you as I think this Ernst was somehow related to my husband's grandmother, Christina Hammer, and that my husband's father was named for him.

Hoping to hear from you.

Carol Michelsen

My great-grandfather was James H. Hammer or Hammers, born about 1875 in Tennessee (or possibly Indian Territory). Both his parent were born in Tennessee, but that's all I know about them. He ended up in De Leon, Comanche County, Texas, where he married Sarah/Sally Dodson in 1895. His children were Norah Artie, Velma, Junette, Wendell and Walter, all born between 1895 and 1909. The family ended up near Los Angeles, and I believe James died shortly after 1910. Anyone have a connection?

Hello Randy
I suspect your family and mine may have a connection. My great,great-grandfather, James H. Hammer(s), was born in the late 1870s, most likely in Tennessee. His parents were also both born in Tennessee, but I don't know their names, birth dates, etc.
James H. Hammer(s) moved to Comanche County, Texas sometime before 1895, which is the year he married. He and his wife (Sallie/Sarah Dodson) had six kids, including sons named Walter and Wendell (my grandfather), and daughters named Donnie, Nora Artie, Velma, and Junette. I've hit a brick wall finding anything else on James H, including his parents and/or siblings, and think he may have been orphaned at a young age, probably soon after arriving to Texas. I can't find him on the 1880 census.
I have found other Hammers around his age in Comanche County with similar/same names as his kids (Wendell, Artie, Nora, Donnie). They are such unusual names that I believe these may be his siblings, but cannot prove it. I wonder if your Martin Luther might be an uncle/brother to his father? In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, he states that his parents were born in Tennessee.

Date unknown to me, but probably between 1820 and 1840.

She was the daughter of the unwed Katharina HAMMER, perhaps born May 5, 1805 in Durnsricht, house #11. The father was probably Peter August WEISS born 1807 in Amberg.

There was also a son of this couple born out of wedlock on Jan 25, 1827 in Duernsricht. He was also Peter August WEISS, my greatgrandfather.

Any helpful data about Margarete WEISS and/or her mother will be very much appreciated.

Helen
I am currently trying to find my grandmother's nieces & nephews. Here is some background story.. My grandmother is name Brigitte she married a US Soldier at a young age (around 20 yrs old) and left Germany.. Her mother Maria Hammer ended up coming to visit her in America around 1978 or 1979 after she was stationed here in Hampton,Virginia, United States of America.. Her brother Horst died in a car accident and his wife Inge whom he had 5 children with died 10 months later from a heart attack.. The children's names are Yens, Romy, Sabine, Jorg, Marion (oldest to youngest)... When the mother and father died Maria (Grandmother of the children) took responsibility for caring for all 5 children.. She has since been past away for about 10+ years.. My grandmother Brigitte is now 70 years old and is in desperate need of finding her only family she has from Germany. If any of this story is related to you please let me know.. Thanks for your time..

There were two John Hammer's born in Shelby County Texas in the mid- late 1800's. Both were sons of an Elisha Hammer born around 1820 in either Missouri or Tennessee. I don't if this helps. There are several Hammer and Hammers families that moved to east Texas in the 1830's

This is real interesting to me. I am a decendant of Elisha Hammers, who lived in Tn about the time you said Elisha was born, but the book I have says his first child was William, born in 1822, which may be in error. I was thinking he (your Elisha) may have been a Jr. What I'm thinking is just speculation, but maybe Elisha Hammers who married Nellie Jordan, was your Elisha's father.

I can't make the connection at this point but will keep this information in mind as I continue to look. Thanks for replying. Martin Luther Hammer was born in June of 1861 in Tennessee.

My Grand Father Walter Hammer spoke about Robert Clyde Hammer and Wilbur Hammer (who both lived in Bristol, Tennessee until the 1950's) and Dr. John Hammer, who left Tennessee in the late 1880's to go to Idaho, as his father's (Martin Luther Hammer) relatives. I'm trying to research those links. My Grand Father Walter Hammer thought his grand parents were David Albert Hammer and Caroline Butler, but I have never been able to find any mention of them in any records.

There was and still is a concentration of Hammer people in North East Tennessee. The earliest records in Washington County have many references. One of the big groups, which my grand father Walter thought were related to us has the following simplified history (but I have never made the link to my family):

John Hammer (immigrant from Germany arrived in Philadephia, moved to North East Tennessee and married Margaret Kaupp or Cupp)

Their children were:
Jacob Hammer m. Catherine Bogart
Barbara Hammer m.James Range
Isaac Hammer, m. Susanna Bowman
Elizabeth Hammer m. Samuel Bogart
Joseph Hammer m. Susan Bowman
John Hammer m. Nancy Agnes McMahon
Jonathan Hammer m. (1) Polly McDaniel & (2) Sarah Bogart

Children of John Hammer (3 April 1771 - 28 Sept 1851)and Nancy Agnes McMahon (born 17 Aug 1763, Chester PA)were:

Rachel Hammer m. Samuel Bogart
John Hammer m. Martha White
Anna Hammer m. Jacob Range
Margaret Hammer m. Asa Cook
Mary Hammer m. ---- Booth
Betsy Hammer m. ?
Isaac Hammer m. Catherine Boart (married Washington County, Tennessee 29 May 1793)

Children of Jonathan Hammer and Sarah Bogart ( 2nd Wife):

Deborah Hammer m. Henry Young
Samuel B. Hammer m. Elizabeth Range
Catherine Hammer m. Wellington McMahan
Jonathan M. Hammer m. (1) Eliza thomas; (2) Kettie Havis

Children of William Hammer and Maria Ruth Temple

Jane Emily Hammer m. M. Wallace A. willoughby
Sarah Ruth Hammer m. Thomas J. Henderson
Josiah Temple Hammer m. Sarah Ann Latham
Julia Ann Hammer (died in infancy)
John Painter Hammer m. (1) Margaret Ann Jame or James
(2) Kate E. Snapp Haynes
David Holt Hammer m. Mary Zimmermann
James Cyrus Hammer m. Elizabeth Gray
Samuel Crawford Hammer m. Mary Wallace

Hope this helps. Randy Hammer, Atlanta, Georgia

Martin Luther Hammer and Martha Gaut Hammer were my great grandparents. They had six children.
1. Charley Hammer 1880-1911
2. Daniel Webster Hammer 1883-1942
3. James A. Hammer 1886-195?
4. Stuart Hammer 1890-195?
5. Mary Augusta Hammer 1892-?
6. Walter B. Hammer 1899-1973

Walter was my grandfather. My Dad lives in Nashville, TN. My sister lives in Chattanooga. My Dad and I have more info on these siblings and some of their descendants but nothing but speculation and oral history on our Hammer ancestors and Martin Hammer's family. You may contact me at thehammerfarm@att.net or thehammerfarm@msn.com. I would appreciate any information on Martin Hammer's siblings and parents. Randy Hammer, Atlanta, Georgia
