Hammers of Tennessee

My great-grandfather, James H. Hammers, was born in Tennessee in 1874. He later is found in Comanche, Texas, where he married Sarah "Sally" Dodson in 1895. A few years later he is in neighboring Erath County. By 1910, he, his wife, and his kids are in California, where he died in 1915. I haven't been able to find any information on his parents or his line. Interestingly, I find others in Comanche Texas with the fairly unusual names Wendell, Donnie and Artie -- which happen to be the same names he gave his own kids. So I figure they must be related, but cannot verify exactly how. Anyone have a Hammers from Tennessee, who ended up in Texas?

Hi
Wondering if in your research you have found a James H. Hammers? This is my great-grandfather. He was born about 1874/1875, most likely in Tennessee. Both his parents also born Tennessee, but I don't have their names/dates. He ends up in Texas (Comanche and Erath counties), marries Sallie Dodson in 1895 and moves to California by 1910.

Please contact me at mbiondillo@msn.com. I have such a long time searched for family of my great grandfather. I have not connected Arthur to Adenijah. I do know where the name came from! William L. hammers born 1836 in Tenn married minerva A Barker born in 1843 in Miss. They married in July 1859 in Rusk Co. TX. She was daughter of Jesse Barker and Eliza Dunbar. On the 1870 census I find William age 32 and Ann age28 in Henderson, Rusk Co. TX Their children were John ( my great grandfather) age 10, William age 7 and Alice age 2. I next find William L and MA in Freestone Co. TX on 1880 census. John and William have left home and Alice is 12, Jennie is 6, Attas is 4 and Addinijah is 1. (Adenijah). That is where I lost the trail. My great grandmother Eliza Jane Cooper was living in Rusk Co with her parents in 1880. She married John Hammers ( no date) but my grand mother Was born to them 21 Aug 1882 in Carthage TX. I next find Eliza in Van Zandt Co. with daughter Mary Ruth Hammers age 8 on school records with a guardian ( Mr. Hall. Please contact me. I will review all my file for more information. My uncle said he was born in 1880 but he didn't know for sure. I can track him back to Elisha thru David Polk Hammers and Calvin Hammers.
James H. Hammers -- Tennessee/Indian Territory to Texas and California

My great-grandfather was James H. Hammer or Hammers, born about 1875 in Tennessee (or possibly Indian Territory). Both his parent were born in Tennessee, but that's all I know about them. He ended up in De Leon, Comanche County, Texas, where he married Sarah/Sally Dodson in 1895. His children were named Norah Artie, Velma, Junette, Wendell and Walter, all born between 1895 and 1909. The family moved near Los Angeles before 1910, and I believe James died shortly after that. I've found a lot of Hammers with similar first names in Comanche County, Texas, leading me to believe there's a connection. Anyone have any info?

Hammers - Tennessee; Comanche County, Texas; possibly Indian Territory

I'm looking for info on my great-grandfather's line. His name was James H. Hammers, born about 1872 in either Tennessee or Indian Territory (different census records say different things). As far as I know, he wasn't Native American, but perhaps? Both of his parents born in Tennessee. Family moved to Texas. He married Sarah Dodson and they had five or six kids, including my grandfather Wendell. Whole family moved to California before 1910. I believe he died before 1920. I can't find his date of death, or any info on his parents or family. Any help out there?

For a long while I was pursuing the wrong James H. Hammers, son of John Henry. This is not my James Hammers, as that one married someone else and stayed in Texas.

Hi

I'm a Hammers, and I've been perusing these Hammers boards trying to find a direct link to my own line.

James H, son of John H Hammers and Geneva Turrentine, is my great-grandfather. Looks like he was born in Tennessee, married Sarah Dodson, lived in Texas, and ended up in Los Angeles, dying young before 1920 (as his wife Sarah is listed as a widow, working in a bakery along with some of her daughters, in 1920 census) -- but that's about all I can find. I've been trying to find more info on him and his parents and his line.

Anyone know more about the parents/family line of John H Hammers and Geneva Turrentine?

My grandfather (Wendell Poe, better known as Jack) was born in Texas but ended up in Los Angeles, and his line of the Hammers are still here in So Cal (including me).

Hi Julene,
Sorry you couldn't get through off-line. We would like to pursue this if we could. Could you tell us where you got the birthdate for your Mary? Was it from a census record or family information. Would you happen to know when she married General Giles DAY and where? Have you pursued the census records and found out where the DAY family lived? Where was Frances born? Anything you could provide would certainly be a lead for us. We don't need to go all the way back to Mary just yet---just knowing where she lived might lead us to further records. Do you know when she died and where? As you can see, I have many more questions than answers. Did the DAY family live in Shelby County before Frances married into the family? You could try me again off-line if you want to at: LT105HAM@Douglasfast.net Thanks for your reply. Linda

We will keep looking and maybe find a clue to the Bills and williams and Johns. Do you know where your Bill is buried? I found some civil war records on Hammers. Of course that is too early for your Bill but Elisha was listed as a indigent family. After the Civil war the State paid compensation to those who were in dire straits due to what happened during the war. It was a tiny amount, like 2 $'s. But it is a list. Texas has land records. I keep finding Elisha and not my John. I will let you know if I run across anything. Mary

Hi Mary,

I do not know any more info on my William other than they called him Bill. On the census in Shelby Co. Elisha has a son named William I do not know if this is the correct William or not. But this William had a child who is called Texas. I do not believe this is his real name. My grandfather was born in Buena Vista which is a small community in Shelby Co. He left home at 14. The 1910 census shows his father was from Ms I do not know if this is Mississippi or Misouri. My grandfather named his third chiild William but he was called Bill he died of TB when I was very young. We have nothing on my Great Granddmother there is no name on his certificate and my uncle did not know. I put my grandfather's picture on the Root-Web so maybe I will get something from it. Your William could be my William who knows.

Sandra

There is a William Hammers on the census born in 1880 Freestone Co TX. Head of household is William L Hammers, wife Manerva Ann Barton Hammers, children Alice, Jennie, Alta, Analijah and William. This is the same family living in Henderson Rusk Co on the 1870 census. Names a little different. Older children John and William are missing on the 1880 census. John is my great grandfather. He married Eliza Jane Cooper in about 1880. My grand mother was born in 1882 in Carthage, Panola Co Tx and I don't find John anywhere after her birth.

Sandra, I live in Texas also. I have a relative who lives in Center. She would probably look for me too but I know she doesn't really know how and she is from the " other side" of the family. Not connected to the Hammers at all. I posted a query on the Genweb Freestone Co. site to see if anyone will answer . That is the last place I found William L and Minerva in 1880. Mary

Hey Sandra, you are a hammer! I didn't know my great grandfather's name until recently. My william L. Hammer was born in 1839 in Tennessee. He married Minerva Ann Barker July 17 1859. She was born about 1843 and died about 1884 in TX. I believe they were living in Freestone Co when she died. I first find them in Henderson ,Rusk Co TX in 1870. They had 3 children, William, John and Alice. My (GGF) John Hammers married Eliza Jane Cooper about 1880 in Henderson, Rusk Co. TX. She was born 10 Feb 1859 near Henderson. They had one child, Mary Ruth Hammers born 21 Aug 1882. We next find Eliza and Mary Ruth in Van Zandt Co. TX. in 1889. Eliza has a new husband. John must have died. We found John's name on a delayed birth certificate for Mary Ruth when her youngest son was killed in WWll. The Govt required it as proof of who she was. Her mother Eliza was still living and gave the information for the document. Now you know what I know. One World Tree is on Ancestry.com web page. Cost a lot but it is my only vice. I have found about 8 William's but non with an I for a middle initial. I have found William Lewis and a William Oliver. The only Hammers I know would be like me and my cousins that have grandfather's. My dad died in 2003 and all the uncle's I knew went before him. The one's in Shebly County are further removed than that.

Did you see the picture I put on for Linda?

Sorry Iam not much help.

Sandra

I think it is time for Dna testing! All known lines and suspected lines. I have recently had the test myself, not good for much I only did it to find out "Does it hurt?" and what they can tell me about my ancestors. I also think we should get all our research and compare to see if we fit. Do you all have your information on Tree Maker? I found mine on the One World Tree. But I havent yet found the person who submitted it. Barker is the surname that has the most information. Do you know who submitted that line? Mary

Hi Linda

My grandfather was born on September 7, 1881 and died on September 8, 1965. There seem to be a lot of Williams. My nephew seems to belief that the William of Elisha is his father. I can not prove this or disprove it.

I do know that they called him Bill and Grandaddy named his third child after him. He named his first born Chester Ezra which Ezra and Chester are both Hammers names because I have found others with these names. He also had a daughter named Edna O. and the twins Lee and Leo back to Hammers names again. Chester was the only on who went back to Shelby County, he married a Cora Elsie Beauchamp so of his grandchildren or great grandchilder Iam sure some of them still live there. Iam at a dead end I know a lot but I can't put it togeather

I did find a Preston Hammers and this a name I have head my dad mention and his father was William and mother was named Bell?

Maybe you can help.
Julene,

Glad you "stepped" into the discussion. We have been searching for our Mary Hammer relation, born (according to census records) in 1847. She would be the daughter of Elisha and Catherine Hammer. Some of the names in your list match names in our Elisha Hammer line. We have a Thomas and a Henry (the younger brothers to our Mary). Paralee (we believe) is the middle name of Mary's older sister Amandy. John and Calvin are both names used quite often in this Hammer family. Calvin was Elisha's first born son. Lucy would have been our Mary's step-mother as Elisha married Lucy Carter in 1874. Catherine was our Mary's mother's name. Your Mary's date of birth is 1845---a possibility to our Mary as census records were sometimes off by a few years.

Do you have any further information about your Mary's parents our where they lived, etc. We would really appreciate hearing back from you to help find out more about this family. Thanks for listing your information. Please write us off-line if you wish at: LT105HAM@Douglasfast.net
Thanks, Linda and Val Hammer

She died young and had 3 sons, Lindon, Burton, and John Wesley. Burton was my grandfather born 1906. (He was 3 when she died. I understand she hung herself.)I would love any info from you if this is the same Annie. I am lost as to her parents but know her father's name was Morris. I met some family at a local hospital several yrs ago and lost track of them. Thanks, Tami

I am not absolutely certain that Morris was the name of Annie E.'s father as I am going by memory. I am a nurse and was working at a local hospital caring for a gentleman by the name of Hammers and I believe his family told me Annie's father was Morris. It turned out that they still lived in Kentucky and was familiar w/ her husband, John Huffman. I have been unable to dig up much info about her family and this may be the reason why...wrong name of father!

Happy holidays! I have not been able to touch base for some time (months!), as work has been out of control. I am on vacation for the holidays, however, and wanted to catch up.

Have you had any luck researching your ggrandmother Ann Hammers using John Herman Hammers as her father? As we could very well have a common ancestor (Geneva), I am happy to share any breakthroughs I can find.

The Geneva Turrentine line is frustrating. I have a whole lot of "maybes", but not one certainty. I know she married Smith Roop, had one son (my hubby's gggrandfather), remarried John H. Hammers, and is listed with Turrentine as her maiden name on her son's death certificate. I have no solid ties to her parents- but I have a "maybe" on a Celia Jones Turrentine (but no husband). SIGH!

You would think that geneaology would relieve stress. :)

She married a General (name not rank) Giles Day. Of this union, 8 children were born:
Thomas Henry Day born Shelby Co. Tex.
Martha Paralee Day born 2-9-1866
Frances Jane Day born 1869 Sheby Co.
My grandfather, who i believe was born in Texas in the late 1800s, was Wendell Poe Hammers. My grandmother, Hazel (her maiden name was Dersey) nicknamed him "Jack," and that's what everyone called him. I was told his mother was Scottish and his father was "Black Dutch," which is how people those days referred to folks who were part Native American. So, with the Texas and the Cherokee connections mentioned on this thread, i wonder if this is the same Hammers family. (I had also heard a rumor that the name was at one time "Hammer" but someone added the "s" to disassociate the family from a horse-stealing relative.

Do you have any knowledge of this Hammer? dorisparker78109@hotmail.com
Thanks, Doris (Leatherman) Parker

I have been doing research for a friend, who is the son of Emery and Mary Hammers. He has 3 full siblings and knew there were 10 half siblings from Emery and Sylvia. But would be interested in knowing about the 5 other ones you mention in your post. Bobbie was adopted out at age 11 in Michigan. This could make Bobbie your half uncle.

Do you have any idea if Lucy's maiden name is Carter or if she was married before? I'm interested in tracing this part of the family----I can't find David Polk Hammers in any census, so I'm not sure where he comes in.
