Hello. This is Robert Hammers. My father, Chester Ezra Hammers was married to Melba Irene Blackburn. I never knew the man. Uncle Lee and Leo use to visit mom. Help her out if need be. One, I forget, I think it was Matthew that owned Right Cut Cabinet shop in Marshall, Texas. Never had a chance to get acquainted with the offspring. I went into military service 1976. Lost track of people and family since then. Supposedly, Chester died 12/55. I do not know what is going on with this picture. Sometimes, it lingers in the back of my mind. Nothing bothers me much. Had a heart attack last year in Asland,Va. I was parked at a truckstop on break. I suppose going into all this genealogy stuff can be sometimes confusing, CONFUSING.
My grandparents were Chalie and Katy Blackburn. That lady passed on and he remarried. Cant remember her name att.
My mom and 2 sisters, Norma Ruth, Cant remember the other aunt name. If anyone has any POSITIVE feedback, please reply.
Hi..

We have just found out that we have the HAMMERSCHMIDT surname in our family.
My father put a trace on his Uncle who was taken by the Nazi's in WW11. The International Tracing Service have come back stating that his parents names were Anton Lachera/Lagera/Lachyra and his mothers name was Helene nee HAMMERSCHMIDT.
The only living relative that I knew. My Great Great Aunt. Always talked about the surname. We think that they were sisters. Helene & Karolina. Karolina was born 5.5.1901.
They had a farm in Western Ukraine. A Village then called "Taubowka".
Anton & Helene had 4 Children. 3 Boys & 1 Girl. My Grandmother.

Reportedly written by Doug Hammers, member of the Hammers Family Facebook Group:

Elisha Hammers Married Nellie Jordon ca 1819, from the New England area, who migrated to Tn when young. Not alot of info on them but there is speculation he died ca 1835. They had 3 sons and one daughter, and i have no records of the daughters name, but it may be Sarah A. Hammers. Sons- William b 1822 d 1910, Morris G b 1827 d 1889, and Joseph b 1832 or 1883, d Nov 24 1891. Joseph Came to Butler Co KY 1858/59, He was married in Sumner co Tn to Sarah J Suttle. They had Seven children

William J b 29 may 1852 d July 10 1892
Marry F b dec 10 1853
John Henry dec 22 1855 d feb 20 1856
Isaac Franklin b May 12 1857 d april 30 1925
Anthaline Elizabeth "Betty" b feb 20 1859 d oct 9 1906
John Thomas "Tom" b sept 28 1865, d April 1937
Josie ca 1874

John Thomas was my Great Grandfather he had 7 children Joseph, Luzettie, Virgil, Erdie, Minnie, Festus, and Ustus.

Erdie was my Grandmother (never married), she had one son,
my father Lindell Cephas, She died when he was 10 yrs old.

I have a book called The Hammers' Of Butler County Kentucky, which has alot of information, but I'm kind of interested in tracing it back and getting more info on Elisha and Nellie Jordon.

I was always told the Hammers' migrated from Germany, I have no ideal if this is true.

Born abt 1895, had a daughter named Catherine Elizabeth with Wilford Burke abt 1916 (he's elusive as well... have found NOTHING about him). She had a 2nd daughter named Eleanor Grace with a second husband named Herman Ewan. Eleanor died in 2010, Catherine in 2005. Family hails from Allegany County, MD with much of the family buried in the Mt Savage area. Does anyone know anything about her?
Thank you.

A. Jett

Hi Roberta

I have discovered that the James H who descends from Geneva is not MY James H. I have since traced my James H. to Josiah (Jo, Joseph) Hammer and Mittie Mariah Jones Hammer. Joe and Mittie moved their family from Tennessee to Texas around 1880, and James H. moved his family from Texas to California in 1910. The James H. who descends from Geneva is an entirely different person.

I sure hope this reaches you, MaryAnn. I have been ill and very busy with work, so I have been unable to work on the trees for some time. I still have little time to put into them, but at least I am back at it!

My husband is descended from William Smith Roop, the sole offspring of Geneva Turrentine's marriage to Smith Roop (he either died or was divorced from her when William was very young; she then went on to marry your ancestor). I know that William Roop stayed very close to the family- he even named one of his daughters after his sister, Ida.

Have you had any luck getting info on Geneva? I swear that woman is hard to find!

Hope all is well and have a merry Christmas!

Roberta

It is possible that I have some info for you on Sarah Dodson.

If we are speaking of the same Sarah, she lived between De Leon and Dublin, Texas on W.H. Harrell (step-father's) ranch (30 acres). I am Great-Grandson of her brother William Henry Dodson.

William Henry Dodson and Sarah Dodson were both born near Mineola, TX. Their father, James Marion Dodson died in the Civil War....never made it home to Smith County.

Their mother, Mary Thorn Dodson remarried and moved on with W.H. Harrell to Farmersville and then to Comyn, Texas. They are both buried at the Round Grove Cemetery near Dublin. The Baptist church there has been closed for many years.

Please share what you know about Sarah and James H. Hammer...It seems Sarah may have been about 10 years older than James. That is curious...
Wow, now this is getting interesting! I didn't know tat I had family in Texas! Runey Hammers was my Greatgrandfather! I've been stuck at Elisha Hammers He was married to Nellie Jordan. He was born in 1790.He had a son named William who was boern in Conn. then moved to Tenn. He then moved to Ky. His Son Elias was my G-Grandfather. I live in KY. My Dad told me about Marian Hammers and he went to visit her but he didn't get into genealogy so he din't write anything down. She is dead now, but she did write a book. We need to get a copy of it. My dad and Grandfather worked construction for Brown and Root so I didn't grow up her in Butler county KY But from what I understand that allthe Hammers here are decendants from 3 brothers who settled here in the 1800s. I lived in and around Houston TX for 20 years then my husband and I moved back to Ky to be with my parents after they retired. I started doing research in 1996. I would love to compare notes with you and any others interested in the KY hammers line. This is so interesting. Feel free to call if you would like. My number is 270-934-2076 (home) 270-799-5137 (cell)

Hammers of Tennessee

My great-grandfather, James H. Hammers, was born in Tennessee in 1874. He later is found in Comanche, Texas, where he married Sarah "Sally" Dodson in 1895. A few years later he is in neighboring Erath County. By 1910, he, his wife, and his kids are in California, where he died in 1915. I haven't been able to find any information on his parents or his line. Interestingly, I find others in Comanche Texas with the fairly unusual names Wendell, Donnie and Artie -- which happen to be the same names he gave his own kids. So I figure they must be related, but cannot verify exactly how. Anyone have a Hammers from Tennessee, who ended up in Texas?

Hi
Wondering if in your research you have found a James H. Hammers? This is my great-grandfather. He was born about 1874/1875, most likely in Tennessee. Both his parents also born Tennessee, but I don't have their names/dates. He ends up in Texas (Comanche and Erath counties), marries Sallie Dodson in 1895 and moves to California by 1910.

Please contact me at mbiondillo@msn.com. I have such a long time searched for family of my great grandfather. I have not connected Arthur to Adenijah. I do know where the name came from! William L. hammers born 1836 in Tenn married minerva A Barker born in 1843 in Miss. They married in July 1859 in Rusk Co. TX. She was daughter of Jesse Barker and Eliza Dunbar. On the 1870 census I find William age 32 and Ann age28 in Henderson, Rusk Co. TX Their children were John ( my great grandfather) age 10, William age 7 and Alice age 2. I next find William L and MA in Freestone Co. TX on 1880 census. John and William have left home and Alice is 12, Jennie is 6, Attas is 4 and Addinijah is 1. (Adenijah). That is where I lost the trail. My great grandmother Eliza Jane Cooper was living in Rusk Co with her parents in 1880. She married John Hammers ( no date) but my grand mother Was born to them 21 Aug 1882 in Carthage TX. I next find Eliza in Van Zandt Co. with daughter Mary Ruth Hammers age 8 on school records with a guardian ( Mr. Hall. Please contact me. I will review all my file for more information. My uncle said he was born in 1880 but he didn't know for sure. I can track him back to Elisha thru David Polk Hammers and Calvin Hammers.
James H. Hammers -- Tennessee/Indian Territory to Texas and California

My great-grandfather was James H. Hammer or Hammers, born about 1875 in Tennessee (or possibly Indian Territory). Both his parent were born in Tennessee, but that's all I know about them. He ended up in De Leon, Comanche County, Texas, where he married Sarah/Sally Dodson in 1895. His children were named Norah Artie, Velma, Junette, Wendell and Walter, all born between 1895 and 1909. The family moved near Los Angeles before 1910, and I believe James died shortly after that. I've found a lot of Hammers with similar first names in Comanche County, Texas, leading me to believe there's a connection. Anyone have any info?

I'm looking for info on my great-grandfather's line. His name was James H. Hammers, born about 1872 in either Tennessee or Indian Territory (different census records say different things). As far as I know, he wasn't Native American, but perhaps? Both of his parents born in Tennessee. Family moved to Texas. He married Sarah Dodson and they had five or six kids, including my grandfather Wendell. Whole family moved to California before 1910. I believe he died before 1920. I can't find his date of death, or any info on his parents or family. Any help out there?

For a long while I was pursuing the wrong James H. Hammers, son of John Henry. This is not my James Hammers, as that one married someone else and stayed in Texas.

Looks like he was born in Tennessee, married Sarah Dodson, lived in Texas, and ended up in Los Angeles, dying young before 1920 (as his wife Sarah is listed as a widow, working in a bakery along with some of her daughters, in 1920 census) -- but that's about all I can find. I've been trying to find more info on him and his parents and his line.

Anyone know more about the parents/family line of John H Hammers and Geneva Turrentine?

My grandfather (Wendell Poe, better known as Jack) was born in Texas but ended up in Los Angeles, and his line of the Hammers are still here in So Cal (including me).

Do you have any idea if Lucy's maiden name is Carter or if she was married before? I'm interested in tracing this part of the family----I can't find David Polk Hammers in any census, so I'm not sure where he comes in.

My father, Gary Lynn was adopted when he was 4. His birth parents were Emery and Sylvia Hammers. I know of 19 brothers and sisters (ten full, the rest half). I know his father, Emery went to Louisiana and had ten more kids. I'm trying to find anyone who may be in relation to Emery Hammers, or Sylvia.

My great grandfather was David Hammers. He married Amanda Loftin in New Orleans. I think he was also born there. If anyone knows who his parents were I would appreciate the help.
