Rich,
I have been digging through Hammes records and this is my conclusion. We are all related. Untangling exact relationships is a Gordian Knot. We came from around Colonge and Dusseldorf Germany. As far as I cane determine there are still Hammes's in that area. They came to the U. S. in waves during the 1800's. I now have birthdates for 35 who were born in Sheboygan County. I'll just list a few of the early dates: Anna, 5/15/51; Anthony, P., 2/28/61; Catharina, P., 11/21/57; Elizabeth, 12/22/68; Emma, 7/26/66; Margaruth, 9/3/63; Mary, 7/30/59. I think we settled in the Pennsylvania area in the early 1800's. And then some moved westward, and writing back to Germany all the while bringing more of us to the U. S. But I repeat, we are all related. The name is occassionly misspelled as Hamas or Hammas in records. My grandfathers birth record lists him as Hames. Well the Sheboygan Hammes's are having a re-union on August 20th. I expect there will be about 5 of us there. See how good we are at keeping touch!
