Saw your posting from years ago. We are related to the Fuchsteiner family. I am the great granddaughter of Cresentia Fuchsteiner. My grandmother was her daughter, Gertrude Krismer. Gertrude married Charles L Morgan. They had 4 children (one died as an infant). The other three were: Marita, Charles R. (my father) and Jo Anne. I have three siblings, Charles T., Timothy and Kathryn. I have three children, Charles, Elizabeth and Christine. We still live in La Crosse, WI I have additional information on the family and some pictures of family. I haven't gone onto ancestry.com or other sites but will try to do so to learn more.
There is an old bar/restaurant with the Hammes coat-of-arms in a leaded glass window no longer owned by a Hammes. One Hammes listed in local directory was old and infirm, he declined an invite to talk. Many familiar names in cemetary at the church and much information available from the church records. I got much info from a distant cousin who was able to correspond with the church pastor in German via mail. I have found many links doing searches of church records thru Ancestry. Good luck. Which of John's children do you link to? Hubert was my great grandfather. Dick

Hi Mary,
I will try to be as helpful as I can but I am going through my dad's records and I remember trying to research the family as we were growing up so this is what I can tell you at this point.
My Great Grandparents were Anna (Mauer) and Michael Hammes. Michaels parents names are Peter Hammes and Maria Assion both born in Germany. Michael came to Newberry Michigan in 1887 (1859 - 1928). They had four children Ferdinand (1890-1919), Gertrude (1893-1949), August (1894-1967) and John (1896 -1986). I hope that this may help you in some manner.

Debra Hammes Starrs

Now I am very curious. My Hammes' settled in WI, then my grgrandfather went to Calumet, MI. My dad moved to Detroit about 1940 but I don't know of any John or August. It's not the most common surname so I figure we are likely related somewhere in the tree. Where do John and August hale from

Mary Hammes Hinchman

Regarding the Hammes brothers. August Hammes is my Paternal Grandfather. He was born October 26 1894 and died August 06 1967. His brother John was born January 23 1896 and died October 24 1986. August Hammes was a Detroit Firefighter and retired at the rank of Captain. I am currently researching more of my families history after the passing of my father.
I was born and raised in West Bend, Washington County, WI. My gggrandfather was John Hammes and came to Washington Cty in 1846 from Gillenfeld, Germany. His oldest son Hubert stayed in the area and was my great grandfather. A daughter,Elizabeth married Mathias Berres and moved to Minnesota (Lakeville) and John died there in 1883 while living with her. The youngest son was Jacob and he moved to Eden Valley, Minnesota around 1870. He had a large family and some of them went to North Dakota but many descendants are still in Minnesota. I have a fairly complete genealogy going back to Germany. Dick Hammes email: rjhammes@gmail.com

My grandmother (of S.F.) talked of the family in Anaheim, but other than that I only know the history through record search, and oral history.
Visit my family tree and see what you can make out of it re. I have a photo of Olga H. I will post. I also have oral history and notes from my father. I've been scouring the census data and have written a short story attached to Olga Hammes Wenzel, who married Edward Wenzel. She shows up visiting Phillip and Charlotte Hammes in Anaheim in a census. One of her children, Olga Wenzel was my great grandmother. Olga W. married Wm. Nicholson. Their two children were named Olga (of course) and Wm. Nicholson, Jr. (of course). This Olga Nicholson married my grandfather Louis Boman of Sweden. See Bowman-Leask Family Tree.
M Bowman

Hi, my name is Maria Cool and am currently doing geneology on the Hammes family. My grandfather was Bernard Hammes and my mother was Irene Hammes. So far no luck on tracing anyone further than John Adam Hammes 1774. I did however come across a news aryical that said prior to 1625 the name was Hammanns and that name was the founder of the Hammes family. His roots can be traced back to Moselle Valley in Germany in 1500. Hope this helps. If you have any questions feel free to email me at cool.maria30@yahoo.com. Take care.

Family in Germany?

I am interest to know if there are any Hammes relatives who still reside in Germany. My ancester Jacob Hammes, son of Adam Hammes, left Masterhousen in the Hundsrucken region in 1851 with his wife and 8 children: George, John, Peter, Ernest, Nicholas, Sybilla, Mary, and one child who died on the voyage. They first went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but then settled near La Crosse, Wisconsin where there remains a large Hammes group. So did Jacob leave any relative in Germany? I know there are many individuals in Germany with this name, but I am not sure if any of them can trace their families back to Jacob. Please let me know.

Interesting, the surname I'm connected to is Dauven and just very recently discovered it. Specifically Michael Dauven and family. Johann Dauven emmigrated from Ferschweiler in 1852 to Washington county WI and had neighbors named Hames-Hammes. If you would like to share more my email is sharolk@hotmail.com
I'm wondering if the Hammes in WI are connected to Minnesota and I believe that there are Dauvens in MN as well. Like I said I just discovered the alternate surname spelling I was researching.
