I have some newspaper articles and one is an interview with John Hammill's son in 1928. He said that his father came from Ireland (no other location was provided), that he worked as a stone mason, bridge building and road grading before moving to MN in 1852. (Am not sure if this was in Ireland or possibly in NY that he had these jobs.) Article also said he was married when he came. However, their first daughter was born in NY in 1854 (from multiple censuses) so that is a bit confusing.

I am a documentary filmmaker in Nebraska working on a project involving WW2 fighter pilots. One of the pilots was Millard F. Arnett, Jr. His wife's mom (Caroline Louise Wells Snider) divorced, then re-married an Edward Charles Hamill (born 29 JULY 1913 in Jerome, PA. Parents Patrick James and Mary). We have never been able to locate anyone in the Arnett family.

We know Edward died 18 JULY 2001 in Las Vegas, NV, but cannot find any trace of family or an obit. Is this Hamill any relation to the family you are researching?

You are correct. The name Burus came from another researcher (my cousin). I have since ordered & rec'd a death certificate for John Hammill (son of John & Ann) and it states that his mother's surname was Burns. Burus really stumped me!

Unfortunately I have no idea where they came from within Ireland. They were Catholic and their daughter Alice married an immigrant from Kilkenny. I've ordered some obituaries from the Scott County Historical Society and am hoping they will answer some questions. I will post what I find here in case we have any ancestors in common. I REALLY appreciate your offer to look for my Hammills in NY records. I know that Mary was born there, but don't know if John and Ann arrived from Ireland as a couple or met and married in NY.
Just a quick note-Burus doesn't sound Irish to me-it may be that the name was Burns-old handwriting could make the "n" look like a "u".I am doing research on Hamill(Hammill)from Ireland to NY and yonder. Do you have an idea where in Ireland they were from?I'll see if I can find anything for you in NY records.

Hoping to find others researching John J. Hammill, born about 1818 in Ireland. I don't know when he immigrated, but his first daughter Mary was born in NY in 1853. His wife, Ann (Burus?), was also from Ireland (abt 1825) but I don't know if they came together or met in NY. They settled in Glendale, Scott County, MN as farmers and the remaining children were born there: Rose (abt 1855), John (1858), and Alice (1865). I believe John and Ann died while living in Scott County since I don't find them after 1880.

If anyone has any connection to this family, please let me know as I would be happy to collaborate.

Bill Grosskleg was the first mayor of Lake Cowichan where there is an historic plaque on their heritage house and a street is named after him: Grosskleg Way. The brass plaque is on the house at 75 South Shore Road in Lake Cowichan. William (Bill) M. Frederick Grosskleg (14 Jun 1886 – 14 Dec 1952) owned a logging company and was married to Helen Grace Hammill (25 Feb 1898 – 12 Jan 1981). Helen was the first teacher at the one-room school there. The incorporation of the village of Lake Cowichan was due to Bill's efforts – it became a town officially 26 Nov 1996. Later, Ron and Sheila Kenyon lived there and they published the “Lake News” newspaper.
Rodolph Case, Philip Carson Case and Will Aubrey Case.My two sisters are still present ,Claudia Case Thames and Marilyn Case Flowers. I would be interested in finding out more about my relatives and background of just where we all came from and who all we are related to.My mother use to talk about our Indian heritage on the Cherokee tribe side and every one laughs when I tell them that but I don't think she was lying about it. My brother Rudy was a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft 1 in Barth Germany and was shot down while on a bombing raid in WWII over Gotha Germany. He was part of the 409th bomb wing and was a flight officer on a B-24 Liberator. He served with Teds Traveling Circus flight group and was a member of the USAF TRIAD group after the war was over up until the time he retired from the military. My Grand father was "Buck" Case and my grand mother was Minnie Case. My parents families were married to the Cases and the Hammills as I have a few double aunts and uncles. If there is any one out there that knows anything about this set of families I would love to hear from you.
Thanks,
Larry Hammill Case

I'm looking for information on Michael Hammill and his wife Elizabeth Sedgewich (sp?) who came to northern NY by way of Montreal, Que, around early 1800s. They had several children among them John who married Sara McCalley, MacCauley. Michael may have settled and died in Potsdam, NY (St. Lawrence Co) while John settled in Hogansburg, NY and helped to found the Catholic church there in about 1835, St. Patricks (pixs attached). Many of these Hammills settled around Massena, Brasher Falls, etc.

Any help will be appreciated.

Joe Hammill

Hi Joe, One thing that really confuses me is, with John Hammill, I see some folks list identicle info in their family trees but connect him to the surname ENLOW.

I have a list of seven children for John Hammill and Sara McCauley and will post names and dates if yoiu don't have them.

I am curious about the connection to a church as there are a few priests and nuns in the family and I wonder about a connection.

Lori-Ann
I'm at the office at the moment, not sure what Jennie (Jane) O'Neill's mother maiden name was, we are related to Lantrys so it could be. I'll look and let you know that. These folks spelled their name, O'Neill, I've also seen it with one "L". On their tombstone in Massenam, the Catholic cemetery, it's spelled with two "L"s. Their are several in that plot, including two Hammills, brothers of my father.

She died in 1916 from "consumption", which we know as TB. I bleieve she was not yet 40, 36 seems to come to mind. My father was about 8 yrs of age when she died.

Would be happy to share what I have on my Hammill's and of course am very interesed in learning your information.

Joe Hammill

I would be interested in seeing your list and comparing notes.
I grew up in that part of NY state. The first Catholic church was the Indian church, St. Regis. As the Irish and French came across from Canada into that part of NY, they attended mass at St. Regis. The church was staffed by French Jesuits and probably was part of the Catholic Diocese of Montreal or Quebec.

By 1835, John Hammill, Keenan and others worked to build a new church, St. Patricks. John Hammill, I think Keenan's name might have been John too, married a Hammill girl, sister of John Hammill's. There were about 5 of them that served as original trustees. I have some pixs of the current church and also the tombstones of John & Sarah. They're buried behind the rectory next to the church.

I'm not sure about priests and nuns (vocations) in the first generation or so. My father, James' (his grandfather was also James) father was Arthur, who Married a Jane (Jennie) O'Neill. She had a brother who was a priest and was pastor of St. Mary's church in Canton, NY. One of my father's brothers, John became a priest, ordained in 1939. They also had a nun on their father's side who lived most of her life down around Albany, NY. She was a sister to Art Hammill, my grandfather. The Fr. John O'Neill was a great uncle.

Joe Hammill

I just started researching my Hammill family tree but my grandfather Thomas Patrick Hammill was born in Blairsville PA. He had a large family, 6 bro and 3 sisters. I have a picture of them, I think it is visable on my tree under Hebden family tree. All born from 1878 through 1897 or so. Parents are Frank and Margaret Hammill. Kids: Belle, frank Francis, Thomas P, Nellie, Maggie, John, Harry, Charles, Edward, Paul. I believe Frank Francis had kids: John, Francis, Maray, Elija, James.

Lieutenant HAMMIL - KC police - Kansas City, MO - November 1907

"The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Friday, November 22, 1907

CAN'T DESCRIBE HIS WIFE.

"I have always maintained that a man can not give an accurate
description of his wife," said Lieutenant HAMMIL of the Walnut
police station yesterday afternoon. "Now here's where I get a
chance to say 'I told you so.' Listen to this letter I got this morning
from a man whose wife has left him:

"Chief of police," the letter ran. "My wife left home Saturday night.
She works down at Jones's warehouse and had just got her week's
pay in the afternoon. I am led to believe that she is still in the city
and would like for you policemen to keep a lookout for her.

"She is about 18 or 19 years old, I don't know which. She is 5 feet
3 inches tall and weighs 135 pounds. By this you see she is
somewhat chunky. She has either blue or gray eyes, and her hair
is either auburn or red. I don't know which. One thing I do know,
and that is that she has a dimple in her chin which grows bigger
when she laughs. This is all I know about her and I hope that you
will be able to find her and send her back to me. I have been a
good husband to her for some time and cannot see why she has
left me. She is not at her mother's."

The man who wrote the letter gave his address as 1224 Locust street.

"Perhaps we can find her, but perhaps we can not," continued the
lieutenant. "Now you may think that this is only one case out of many
where a husband could not describe his wife, but I tell you that in
ninety-nine cases out of a hundred, a man can not tell you the color of
his affinity's eyes or hair."

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo5

it's a long time since you posted your message but I have only recently discovered my Scottish ancestral connections. Anyway: John Cassidy married Margaret Hammill December 31st 1898 at Johnstone - about 18-miles from Irving, They produced one son that I am aware of, John wjo was born at 1am on July 7th 1902 at 54 Canal Street, Paisley.

I know nothing of Margaret's ancestors but John was one of 11-14 children born to Andrew Cassidy and Ann Blue of County Antrim, Ireland

Hammells in Sussex County, New Jersey

I am looking for William Hammell's parents. William Hammell was born on September 5, 1878 in Sparta, New Jersey and he died on April 5, 1925 in Sparta, New Jersey. He is buried at Sparta Presbyterian Church Cemetery along with his wife Julia Norman Hammell-Perrigo. He married Julia Etta Norman on May 5, 1907. Julia married Ira m Perrigo in June 1928 in Ogdensburg, New Jersey. William and Julie had a child named Russell D. Hammell that was born on June 2, 1907.

I know that there are a lot of William Hammells born around 1878. I do not know what his middle inital was, hence me having problems finding him :). Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
