I am looking for any genealogical information on John Kille Hammitt, the noted shipbuilder of Philadelphia. Born about 1795, Salem County, New Jersey, married Hannah Harris in 1834, father of Jane, Mary (MacCrellish), Martha (Woodward), and John H. Hammitt, grandfather of Henry K. Hammitt. John K, Hammitt died at his home, 1025 Beach Street on 25 February 1880, and is buried with members of his family in the Hammitt plot at Laurel Hill Cemetery. His parents may have been Samuel Hammitt and Jane Simmons (yet to be proven). Any business information on his shipbuilding operations would also be appreciated.
