I have an obituary "Death of a Veteran..Mr Elijah Groom dies at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mertie Wanke, in the city of Boscobel Thursday afternoon, April 2, 1903, of asthma, aged 71 years. Death came to the old settler and sturdy veteran suddenly--while he was sitting in his chair. He had been ailing from his old complaint for a few days, but was feeling better and thought to be out again, when the Messenger summoned him suddenly to the Camp beyond the stars. The funeral took place last Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Congregational church in Boscobel. The Rev. W.J.C. Bond preaching a most appropriate sermon. the services were under the auspices of the G. A. R. post, of which deceased was an honored member. Elijah Groom was born in England June 25, 1834, and came to the United States with his parents when 10 years of age, in the year 1814, settling immediately in Cassville, Wis. Here he lived until he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Hammond at Beetown on Nov.5, 1857. After marriage he resided for a time in Missouri. When the war of the Rebellion brout out he enlisted in company C 25th Wis. Inf., under "Cap Ferg." He was enrolled on the 9th day of August, 1862, and after serving his country faithfully through a campaign of unspeakable hardships he was discharged at Washington June 7, 1865. Mr. Groom came to Marion, Wis. in 1870, settling with his wife on a farm, where his wife died in July 1900. Thirteen children were born to him--six daughters and seven sons--of who nine are living today. Those of the children who remain to mourn the passing away of a large hearted father are: Mrs. John Adams, Crawford County, Wis; Mrs Waltz, Marion, Wis.; Mrs Edith Stocker, Rockford, Illinois; Mrs Joe Wanke, Boscobel, Wis;Mrs Ernest Ricks, Crawford county, Enoch Groom, Stuben; Abraham, Frank and Lee Groom, Boscobel. Brothers and sisters who survive him are: George and Lewis Groom, Emma and Laura Obershaw, Cassville, Wis; Mrs Graig, Oklahoma; Mrs Ganiard, Oregon; Walter Groom of Colorado.".....My great grandfather, a half- brother, George Edwin Groom, from William Groom's second marriage to Elizabeth Salter Groom of Cassville.
