My great-grandfather, Hermann Schmidt, was born in 1888 in Konstantynow, Poland (a suburb of Lodz). His mother was a Bertha Hampel. I do not know Bertha's age, but her first child, my great-grandfather's older brother, was born in 1880 - meaning she was probably born around 1860 or thereabouts.

I have one picture of her, causally taken and in sepia, taken sometime between 1913 and 1921 (she's sitting with her young daughter-in-law, my great-grandmother). I have a tone of pictures of unknown people as well, all that appeared to have been pulled from a photo album (that is on Bertha's lap in the photo), but few have anything written on the backs of them. Maybe they're Hampels ??

All I know about Bertha herself is that she was born in Poland, was of German ancestry (likely Prussian if the family stories are to be believed - as well as records on LDS), was born c. 1860, and that her family spoke nothing but German, their graves are even in German (possible volksdeutsch ?).

Any additional info would be appreciated

Elizabeth Michael in Missouri

Since my husband and I are retired, we do low-budget genealogy. Today, at the Genealogical Society's library, I found my g grandmother, Petronella Elizabeth Michael (Pait) on an ancestry.com listing called Hampel; the owner was listed as "lois beaver." Since I know that many viewers post at both ancestry.com and here at rootsweb, I'm posting here to see of that owner (or anyone who might know the owner) would be willing to get in touch with me; we may be distant cousins, as that site listed Mary Alice Pait, who was the sister of my mother's mother, Anna Pait Dorrance.

Sometimes I do look-ups for others and also am working on the LDS indexing project.
Donna

Looking for any info on the Louis Hampel family of PA. Louis was born in Hesse Darmstadt abt 1835. He married Sophia ? They had the following children: John,William,Franklin,Martin,Annie M.,Harry,George,Charles, Gertie,Lewis,Oscar, and Beulah. Louis died in 1903 in Tyrone PA. Need to know who Sophia was (maiden name) and when she died. Any info on this family would be appreciated. I'm just starting my research and have pretty much exhausted the census search online. Next stop might be county court houses I guess.

The photo was purchased at an antique shop either in Monroe County, Ohio or in WV. If interested, I only want the cost of the photo ($2.00) and postage. Please contact me at briley2@frontiernet.net.
This is just a hobby I have of purchasing photos found with a name and trying to get them to a family member.
I don't know if any of you can help me but I am trying to locate information on my grandmother, Elizabeth (Elsie) Hampel Witt born in Pasewalk, Germany. She was born Oct 15, 1881. She married Albert Fram Witt Oct 14, 1903 or Sept. 14,1908 in Pasewalk at home. Elsie arrived with two children to join husband Albert in 1914 and according to Ellis Island records she came from Portwalk, Russia, I know that she had a sister living in the Russian side and received letters from her in what I was told was "White Russian". At the time I was to young really understand that. On their citzenship papers she is listed as Elizabeth, but I only knew her as Elsie and that is what is written on her tombstone. If any one can shed a little light on this matter or know where else I can look. The time would be very much appreciated. Our researcher was not able to go through every single record, but we have a good amt. of info to start. What do you know about your Leontine?

Other Hampel names: Berka, Berek, Brandli Brandla, Mirla, Liba, Pinkus, Abram, Ejzyk, Lipa, Nuchem, Ruchla Laja, Frajdla, Estera Malka, Estera, Hersz, Gersz, Jachet, Chajm, Perla, Beniamin, Moszek, Abraham, Abba
Other surrnames: Parasil, Grajner, Hemajner, Brodzka, Zeidman, Wenzowsky, Wionzowsky, Wionzoska

Pls. keep my name in your file, as there is a good chance there will eventually be a connection. I plan to order all the Hampel records, eventually, but getting them interpretted is another story! I'm waiting for 12 records to be interpretted now, and it may not happen any time soon.

Hampels in Jefferson County, MO

Having reached a point where I'm not getting anywhere working backwards on my family tree, I've decided to work downwards instead, filling in a lot of the gaps of brothers, sisters, and cousins of my ancestors. Right now, I'm working on the Hampel family that lived in Jefferson County, Missouri. They arrived some time prior to the Civil War, and there are likely still some people with that surname in the area.

I'm descended from Magdalena Hampel, daughter of Peter Hampel and Magdalena Thines. Peter was the son of Jacob Hampel, and this Peter and his brother, Jacob, were the ones who immigrated to the Jefferson County, MO, area.

I'm trying to sort out all of the various family lines, which is made more difficult by the preponderance of Jacobs, Peters, Johns, Michaels, Marys, Margarets, and Magdalenas.

If you are related to this bunch, please drop me a line!

Dawn
He had a second name of Mann that I do not know how it fits in. He was in the Chicago area then in Wisconsin then California. Do you think that they were brothers? I haven't found much on the family. It's like a big brick wall! Let me know. Debbie
