Hampshire name

There are lots of Hampshires in Ohio and Indiana where I am from. Some time back I found a census entry for a "Hampshire, Negro" who was in the Baltimore, MD area. I will assume that this man was a slave and the Hampshire name was taken. There are lots of Hampshires in Maryland as well. Hope tht helps. We have some parallel history way back there.
