My g-grandfather was Henry Hamsher, I think his father was William, possibly married to Anjeline. Henry had sons, John, Harry, & George, who was my grandfather, & two daughters. They were from E PA area between Allentown & Reading PA. Does this mean anything to you?

Hello cousin,

We share the same great grandfather, my grandfather was William's sibling, Edmund who was the youngest of the clan, my father was David who was Edmund's youngest.

Perhaps we could communicate by e-mail and see what information we could share, rather spotty on my side as my fathers family was very tight lipped and did not speak much about family history, I do know a bit about Sarah Broughton and that her family had an ancestral castle located at Broughton on Furness and that her father was a member of parliment and a baronet, also that a long succession of Hampshire's were silver smiths, also that the name Edmund had been passed down through many generations, also the middly name of Kay for male Hampshire children (my one son carries that middle name and the other carries Edmund, as well as some of my nephews). My grandfather Edmund settled in Rochester NY and had 5 children, none of whom are alive, they were Edmund, John Richard, David (my father), Betty, Mildred and Leonore. My grandfather Edmund was born To Edmund and Sarah in Swissvale, PA in 1888.
I have a collage of our mutual great grandparents and their children which I am sure would include a picture of your grandfather, I am not sure of all their names so you may be able to help in that respect, I dont believe I have them all scanned but can take some shots with my digital camera to e-mail to you.
Please drop me a line, I dont have many living relatives and it would be nice to connect with "lost" family members.

I'm researching Alfred Hampshire, who I have reason to believe was born in Oldham, Lancashire, in 1876; and subsequently left South Africa to fight with the British forces around the time of the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902).

As I have been unable to find any Alfred Hampshire's born in Oldham in 1876, the record that to my eye has the best potential is that of an Alfred Hampshire born in 1878, to William and Mary Hampshire. I have found mention of him in the 1881 Census (on FamilySearch.org and FreeBMD.org.uk); I believe in the Lancashirebmd.org.uk, where his mother's maiden name is given as Nield; and 1881-census.co.uk.

Whether or not this is the man I am looking for I honestly don't know; he certainly does not seem to appear in the 1901-census.com, which is when Alfred Hampshire is supposed to have already been in South Africa.

Regarding his military career, little is known other than that he allegedly trained troops at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town. He may have also served in World War One. Ancestry.co.uk does have the WWI Pension Records for a Alfred Hampshire, but neither date nor place of birth appears to be given.

During his time in South Africa he married Evangalina (maiden name unknown) and fathered at least three children: Wilfred George, Alfred Albert Victor and Lily.

He died and was buried in 1945 in Cape Town.

Any assistance you might be able to provide is greatly appreciated.

I knoiw there are lots of Hampshires from Thornhill, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, but has anyone come across Ezra b.1839- d.1903. He moved to Stanley, presumably for work in the coal mines and married Sarah Bridgett in 1858. He is my ggg grandfather. Thanks for any help.

I beleive you are incorrect,Edith's father was George Hampshire.Edith's brother was my grandfather John Henry Hampshire.I beleive the first Hampshire came over from England in 1860 who fought in the civil war.

My Hampshire line is traced back to 1758 in Darfield, Yorkshire, England. In the early 1800's, they were in Thornhill-by-Dewsbury, 1830's in Sheffield and Wakefield, So. Yorkshire, and by the 1850's they immigrated to Pennsylvania where they supposedly owned a coal mine in Janesville-Hazelton, Luzerne Co. By the 1880's, my great-grandfather was living in Philadelphia, PA.

OK, I am winging this off the top of my head, without my notes in front of me. Ross HAMPSHIRE was my grandfather's brother, and born about 1895 in OH, died in about 1950 in the Los Angeles area. His son Donald lived in Van Nuys and I spoke to him by phone about 20 years ago. He has since passed away, but had children in CA.

I called your father on a business trip to Anaheim several years ago, and he was very kind in talking to me. I am happy to share what I know of the family. Until recent years, there was a small family reunion in OH of my dad, his sister and some of their cousins.

i've not got that far with my search but we are still living in emley at factory farm. i have got a direct line back to 1841 with john aged 60 and jane also aged 60. but by 1851 john has taken a house keeper called martha kaye aged 44.

Hello Al, Many thanks for your reply, rather confused now since i was sure i had found my Henry Hampshire with his father and siblings .The dates fitted perfectly,however i have since tracked down Henry's marriage to my GtGtGrandmother Sally in 1846 and he gives his fathers name as James Hampshire not Joseph as i first thought. So back to the drawing board.Rather odd though as this is the only Hampshire family in the area.The 1841 census of course only gives Yorkshire as place of birth no town so unless i can find him with his family it could be a long search !! Updating my info on the Hampshire family of Thornhill..
I have Henry Hampshire born c1825/26 to James Hampshire and ?? (possible Johanna Fisher)
have now tracked several Hampshire males..all Stone Masons from Thornhill to the Lancashire/Yorkshire border in and around the Saddleworth area..
My Henry is first found at Knuckitt(Watersheddings)Oldham in 1841 with Abraham and Mary Hamshire..i suspect this is his older brother as Abraham and Mary are only 25 and Henry is 13 yrs. with this family is Rachel Asquith aged 15.
Henry and Abraham are again found together in 1851..this time Henry is a visitor to Abraham now widowed..Henry has with him my GtGtGrandmother Sally also my GtGrandfather James then aged 1 yr..
Now they are at Higher Fold,Hazelhurst.Ashton-u-Lyne.
I have copies of marriages of Henry to Sally Winterbottom in 1846, also that of Abraham Hampshire to Mary Shaw also 1846..in both cases the father is given as James Hampshire- Stonemason..
Is there anyone out there that might be able to give me any further info on this family....?
Have found a possible match on the 1841 with James Hampshire (Farmer/Stonemason) with wife Johanna....no Henry but then if he was their son he was already in Oldham with his older brother..
Any Baptisms would be wonderful to confirm or disprove........

Hi. I'm just starting this, so I haven't progressed very far, but if anyone can help me I'd be really grateful. My maternal family are also Hampshires from the Thornhill area. Henry born 1832 (married to Mary Ann born 1830, surname unknown) is the furthest back I have so far, and I'm trying to track down his parents. If anyone has any suggestions as to who theymight be that would be great. Not many of the names you have mentioned tie into mine, so I imagine I'm looking at a collateral branch. I do have an Ezra, but born later, 1862. perhaps theres a connection? I'm also looking for his sister Honor Hampshrie as I can find no trace of her marriage anywhere. Again, I'd be grateful for any help. Thanks

There are still Hampshires going about in the U.K. My mother was a Hampshire. The only thing I can tell you is my uncle Lionel Hampshire was sent to relatives in the Kent area in the 1930's during his childhood. He is alive and lives Yarmouth. I too have seen the Kent and Yorkshire link and am fascinated by the fact that the branches mixed socially i.e.intermarried.

I am wondering if there might be a connection between our Hampshire lines.
I have a George Hampshire born 1822 in Yorkshire, ENG who married a Morton? and later came to America where children: James, William, Mary Jane, Victoria, and George where born. James born 1858 in Janesville, PA. At least some of this family goes on to Hazelton, PA and they were in the coal mining work.

Hi there, my great-great grandmother Mary Ann Hampshire came from Ospringe, born about 1831, and her father Thomas Hampshire was also from Ospringe, born 1806.

I believe that his mother Ann was born in Throwley c. 1782.

So far I have only looked at online census records and civil registration entries, can you give me more information??

We have a Joseph Kay Hampshire born Emley c1827 who married Mary Kaye & with their 3 children migrated to Australia in 1863.
Joseph was an Engineer who in 1861 was working for Iron Works in Derbyshire.

Very interested to note that you have a Joseph Hampshire married to Mary Kaye in your tree. My partners GT Gt Grandparents were Joseph Kay Hampshire & Mary (nee Kaye) They came to Australia in 1863. He was listed in the 1861 UK census as Managing Engineer at Iron Works Derbyshire. According to that census they had 3 children.However none was named Edmund. Could there be any connection
