Looking for info on Ole Ivar Hamre

Hi,
I'm the g-grandson of Ole Ivar Hamre, b. 25 Mar 1865 in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway. Ole and his family immigrated from the Leikanger, Sogn og Fjorde area to Minnesota around 1875. He ended up in NW Minnesota in Norman county. His brother, Jens, was also there in the Twin Valley area. Ole's father, according to the Bygdebok, was Ivar Kjelson Fosse, so apparently they took the Hamre name from the farm they worked in Leikanger. Ole married Ingeborg Huseby, b. 16 Feb 1872 in Minnesota, d. 4 Sep 1911 in Norman County, MN. The Huseby family also appears to have immigrated from the Leikanger area. Ole passed away on 1 Aug 1942 in Gary, Minnesota.
If any of this sounds familiar to you, I would be very interested in chatting with you. I can be contacted at mngolfergeek@yahoo.com.
The 1920 US federal census for Kings Co. (Brooklyn) New York lists "Nels M? Hamre" as 32 years old b. Norway and immigrated 1905. Source: National Archives Microfilm Series: T625 Roll: 1148 Page: 275.

So he might appear in the 1900 Norwegian census. Two online databases searchable for that resource:
http://www.rhd.uit.no/indexeng.html
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...

So if he was born ABOUT 1888 consider that spellings in Norway may have differed and build those possible variations into a search.

The "RHD" database returned two possible matches but only one living on an island off the western coast of Norway.
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1900&...

This family is living in the little port town of Skudeneshavn on the island of Karmøy in Rogaland, Norway.

You can find "Nils M Hamre" in the Ellis Island arrival records and that would seem to validate the match to the family found living in Skudeneshavn.

not related - for board info

Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Hendrum, Norman, Minnesota; Roll: 1109; Page: 4A; Enumeration District: 13; Image: 909.0.

Name Age
Martin Hamre 44
Clara Hamre 42
Heman Hamre 19
Curtis Hamre 17
Moselle Hamre 11
Lester Hamre 6
Melvern Hamre 4
================================
Hamre, Melvern Clair

MELVERN CLAIR HAMRE, 81, of San Bernardino, passed peacefully into eternal rest on March 19, 2008, surrounded by loved ones who will miss him dearly. Melvern was born on June 3, 1926, in Hendrum, Minnesota, to Martin Otto and Clara Josephine (Selness) Hamre. He graduated from Hendrum High School in 1944 and the day after his 18th birthday, began active duty in the United States Naval Reserves. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1946, he attended Concordia College in Moorehead, MN, for a year, and then enrolled in the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. Mel always said this course of events was guided by a higher hand, as it was there that he reconnected with Dorothy Christianson, a childhood friend, and on October 9, 1949, they were wed. Mel and Dorothy settled near Fargo, North Dakota and so on began their family. In the spring of 1960, seeking a new adventure and warmer climes, the family moved to San Bernardino, CA where Mel began working for Lazar Cadillac. In 1964, Mel accepted the position of Parts Department Manager at Hatfield Buick in Redlands where he daily demonstrated his strong work ethic, keen organization skills, and personal integrity. Mel retired from Hatfield's on May 17, 1991, a day chosen with a dual purpose. May 17 is Norwegian Independence Day and Mel, who was proud of his Norwegian heritage, never missed an opportunity to elicit a smile with a play on words. Mel was an active member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in San Bernardino for 47 years and enjoyed the game of baseball, pitching horseshoes, playing golf, and mostly, spending time with his family. Mel is preceded in death by his parents Martin and Clara and 3 brothers (Herman, Curtis, and Lester). He is survived by one sister, Mozelle Sosalla of Sac City, Iowa. He also leaves behind Dorothy Hamre, his devoted wife of 58 years, 5 children (Cathryn Tasker of Duarte, CA, James Hamre of San Bernardino, CA, Scott (Carol) Hamre of Calimesa, CA, Dianne Pavia of Loma Linda, CA, and Julie (Timothy) Ball of San Bernardino, CA), 5 grandchildren (Ryan Tasker, Kevin Tasker, Nicholas Hamre, Lillian Ball, and Noah Ball), several nieces and nephews and many beloved friends. Visitation will be held at Montecito Memorial Park and Mortuary in Colton, CA, on Monday, March 24, from 5 to 8 P.M. A Service of Committal will take place at the War Memorial in The Garden of Valor at Montecito on Tuesday, March 25 at 10:00 A.M., followed by a Memorial Service at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 5050 N. Sierra Way, San Bernardino, at 11:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Lutheran Church of Our Savior.
Published in the San Bernardino Sun on 3/24/2008.

Looking for descendants of Peter Hamre (b. 1849) and Bertha Hamre who emigrated from Norway to Benson, Swift County, Minnesota about 1880. They had 10 children (9 girls and one boy): Dorothea (Dora?), Nels, Jensine (Sina), Lena, Bessie, Ella (?), Rikka (Ragnhild?), Petra, Minnie, and Laura. Tough to track as only the one boy who had one child, a daughter. Actually Nels became quite famous for photographing Norwegians in America. The only story I ever heard of her, was she had a huge white horse that she would ride over the prairies, not much to go on. I know she was divorced from Casper, he had some type of mental breakdown, and was in Jamestown mental hospital, died there I believe before 1930.
thank for your time
jean

To start your search..look at this message board. The George Hamre obit is my father, Al Hamre's [Clarance and Alma's son]cousin. George and Eleanor [mentioned in the obit as proceeded in death] were both children of Henrietta Hamre who was married to my grandpa, Clarance's, brother. Who may I ask is your mother in law that is searching my family's roots??? Very curious.
Hope this starts you out..looking forward to teaching you more of what it is you are in search of. Kathy A. Hamre

Hello, Linda - It looks like you've had lots of Hamre responses, but not from Røldal. My 4th great-grandmother was Dise Olsdatter Hamre, b. 1688 in Røldal, Hordaland. Her daughter, Marta Knutsdatter Rabbe married Mons Olsen Berge Øvland, and his son, Knut Monsen went to Breive in Setesdal where he married the widowed heiress of that farm. Their grandson was my grandfather, Tarbjørn Monsen Brevig (1849-1937). I have visited in Røldal, and think it is one of the prettiest little spots in Norway!

Gurie Hamre,my great grandmother, a certified Norwegian mid-wife, came to Butte about 1887 with her husband and several children, and homesteaded in the Elk Park Valley between Butte and Boulder. They persisted there at 6300' elevation until 1935 or so; subsistence farming plus working in the Butte mines.

Cousin Hazel Hamry compiled a tree going back to about 1635 or so. If you're interested I can supply that info.

dave marshall

His email address is Grannyandbigal@aol.com just tell them that I gave you their address to help in researching the family tree. Did you go to my father's webpage? It is www.hamrenet.com It is nothing special, it is mainly about his business out here in Northern California. Anyhoo, hope that you had a great holiday season. Nice to hear from other Hamre's!
P.S. While I was driving accross country in September of 1999 I saw a license plate in Illinois that said HAMRE1. Wonder if they are related too!

Guri Hamre was also my great-grandmother, the spelling of the last name was changed to Hamry when they entered the US. I have a little bit different information on their lives but essentially the same.
I have the Bygdebok for Eid which has the Hamre family farm history in Romsdal.
