Hello,
I saw your posting for the surname Hamrak, and the notes that you mentioned regarding Szepes Megye (now known as the Spis Region) and the villages of Iglo (now known as Spisska Nova Ves) and Poprad. A great, great, great grandmother of mine is Susanna Hamrak, who was married to a Matthias Jurasko, and were from the village of Richno (presently known as Richnava) in the Szepes (Spis) region near Spisska Vlachy, southeast of Spis Castle. There are at least 23 Hamrak's listed in the Klukno (Kluknava) parish records (available through microfilm at the LDS Family Research Centers). It is also my understanding that there are other Hamrak's located near Spis Castle (Szepes Varalja). While Poprad is located northeast of Spis Castle, Iglo (Spisska Nova Ves) is located west, approximately 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) from Spisska Vlachy. In regard to your research, it may be best to check out the microfilms for Spisska Nova Ves and Poprad for your ancestors. I have found some success with the LDS microfilms, but the microfilm for Kluknava parish does not appear to have dates prior to the early 1800s, so I have presently hit a roadblock in my Hamrak research. From the records that I have seen, it does not appear that my great great great grandmother was originally from Richno (Richnava), and may have come from a village to the northwest closer to Spis Castle. I wish you well in your search, and I hope some of this information may help a little. Anyone with the Hamrak surname please feel free to write me. David Michael Baloga at David1Law@aol.com
