Hello Tim,

Much as I hate coincidences, it appears that we may have one here. I descend through the SNYDER family and we do have proof of Rebecca P. HAMSHER b. 3/14/1836 who married Thomas Jefferson SNYDER on 3/20/1869 in Sparta, NY. Since the first posting, we have established that Rebecca P. HAMSHER was the daughter of Bernard HAMSHER and Rebecaa FLICK (FLECK). Incidentally, Rebecca P. Hamsher SNYDER died in Pekin, IL on 9/27/1877. And we do have a picture of her.

So there may have been TWO Rebecca HAMSHERs born 3/14/1836. It could happen, I guess.

Thanks for the response - Jon

Hi Christine, I don't have that much on the Homsher line. It seems that Anton's descendents changed the name to Homsher. His cousin, Adam, was my gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather, and it seems that most of Adam's descendents changed the name to Hamsher. I believe that when Anton and Adam came over it was originally spelled Hamscher. Not sure what the name on the birth certificate would be. Actually back in those days, its likely there was not a birth certificate, but there may well have been a baptismal certificate. I found a web site a few years ago about Pennsylvania Dutch naming patterns, and its real common that the children will have the same first name. I know my great great grandfather had children named John Valentine, John Adam, and John Peter. The first name John is a religious name, and it was understood that they would be known by the middle name. Technically they would have all been Johan which is like John, and its the religious name. Now confusing this, is if the first name is Johannes, then the name is really supposed to be John. Of 8 boys, three of them were Johan (John) and the youngest son was a Johannes (John), and only the youngest one actually went by John. There is something similar for the girls, as several in the same family might have the same religious first name, but they were known by the middle name. All of those variations of Mary like it could be one of those pattern names, especially if you find something on female siblings with the same name. I hope this helps, but it gets confusing. dh

My maiden name is Homsher, and I may have one of the histories generated by David Homsher that you speak of. I believe he passed info onto my Uncle Joe and my Dad (James) Homsher. Joe input the info into an Apple program (best available in 70's). It does not include very much info on the females of the Homsher family, and almost no info on females that married into the Homsher family. However, it does go back to Anton/Anthony Hamsher, born 1724,arriving in US from Germany. I also have Marie Zearfoss listed as marrying David Homsher (Sr) in about 1787, however, I notice from this notice board that she seems to have many first names: Mary, Marie, Maria, Margaretha, and Polly. Do you know what was actually on the birth record?

I am seeking information on the David and Lydia Hamsher family of Upper Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co., PA. David was born about 1817 in Pennsylvania (son of Samuel Hamsher, b. about 1790) and was a shoemaker. He's found first on the 1850 Long Swamp Twp., Berks Co., PA Census. By 1860 they had moved to Upper Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co., PA. Between the 1870 and 1880 Censuses, David had died, leaving Lydia a widow. Living with her were her 30 year old son William and a grandson, Freddie Wolfe, aged 11 years.

David and Lydia Hamsher had the following children:

Catharine (married William Davis)
Mary [was working as a servant in the Levi and Anna Kramliche (?) household in 1860]
Alfred
Benjamin
Hannah
William
David
Alice

If anyone has any information on this family, I would be very grateful.

Deborah Hainley Bonnar
London, England
My great grandfather had a younger sister, Rebecca who married a Snyder. Last spring a 4th cousin sent me information that she married a Thomas J. Snyder and died in Pekin IL. She was the daughter of Bernard and Rebecca Flick Hamsher, and was born in Sparta Twp. Livingston Co., NY. I spotted another note that showed Thomas Snyder was from Northampton Co., PA. My great great grandfather Bernard Hamsher was born in Northampton Co., PA.

Hi Doug, that was a great reply; it filled a couple of very significant holes. Thanks a lot. A few other comments:
- Rebecca's middle name?
(I have "Jane" and "P.")
- Can you confirm Rebecca's birth 14 Mar 1836?
(in Cumberland, Lancaster Co. PA)
- Any date and place info Rebecca's marriage:
(to Thomas J. Snyder)
- Can you confirm 1 son, Thomas B. Snyder?
(I have a Thomas B. b.19 Jun 1874)
- Rebecca's date of death?

I had some unconfirmed information that Rebecca's parents were John Hamsher and Mary Wunderlich. But I like the "Flick" tie-in because it matches a family note.

It's an interesting speculation of how both families are from Northampton Co., PA. Thomas J. Snyder was born on 25 Apr 1834.

Thanks again for such a good reply. If you wish, you can e-mail me at .

Jon

More on Rebecca Hamsher

Hi Doug, I'm still trying to clear up this Rebecca Hamsher - Snyder linkage. I have a photostat of a handwritten record of births (maintained by the Snyder family) which clearly shows that Thomas J Snyder's first marriage was to Rebecca P. Hamsher who was born 14 Mar 1836. This is an unlikely "coincidence". Do you have any other documentary evidence or proof or suggestions which could resolve this?

Could you copy or scan some of your material for me? I would be glad to reimburse for your expenses and effort. Specifically, I would like paper or digital copies of Rebecca Flick Hamsher's newspaper obituary, the long CD article about the Pennsylvania Flicks, and the old photograph of "Aunt Beck".

Does the name "Lavina (Lavinia) P. Johns" appear anywhere anywhere in your records relating to Bernard Hamsher and h/w Rebecca Flick Hamsher?

Are you willing to pursue this train farther by e-mail instead of the forum? If so, my address is . Thanks - Jon
