I am still in the beginning stages of my Hanagan family research. I happened along Richard's obit from a library in Ohio. I do know that they all were farmers and I have found them in the 1860, 1870 - census in Ohio. Did your John come to Ohio? In the 1860 census I find 4 of my 6 brothers in Woodstock, OH as farmers with a woman aged 74 ( Mary) I would love to assume that she is their mother... but until I can find the birth records in Kildare I am hesistant to make that assumption. I will keep you post and if you are interested I will send you what I have to date on my Hanagan's.
Julia
jstillwell2@cox.net
I am looking for info on a John Hanagan of Kildare, who married an Anne Fitzgerlad in 1843 in Monasterevin, Kildare. He was living in the parish of Nurney on the Griffiths valuation in 1852. Had daughters Ann and Mary.
From an obit for my gg Uncle I found the following info on families origin in Ireland.. I am hoping to make a connection or help with lookup in RC records. I think I have the parish and townland from griffith's and tithe records.

Richard Hanagan was born in County Kildare, Ireland, on March 27, 1831. He died at Ridgway, Hardin Co. Ohio on September 27, 1892 at the age of 61 yrs. He was one of 6 brothers who came to Ohio in 1850............

jstillwell2@cox.net

Hello Duncan,

Thank you very much for your reply. If John Dowling did serve in Afghanistan and is missed off the medal roll, then he should definitely be on the database. I checked the roll, and you're quite right - no Dowling.

Do you have any documentary evidence of his presence at Peiwar Kotal, eg. a copy of the muster roll or his medal and clasp entitlement from his service record?

You're spot on about the climate - the stats alone tell the story there, 74 officers killed in action, 64 died from exposure or illness (and that's just the officers - nearest numbers at hand).

Thanks again, best -
Garen.

Hi Garen,

It was actually John Dowling who served in the second Afgan War at Pewar Kotal, I have all the muster rolls he was definately there when the battles took place and had several children out there including my great grandfather (born in Mian Mir which is now Lahore). Whats really wierd is he is not mentioned on the medal roll, he was a sergeant, possibly a company sergeant major as family lore has it he was a sergeant major, I have not managed to locate him yet after his return from India, I am guessing he switched regiments.

There was another John Dowling who was a Sergeant Major in the same regiment (LIverpool Kings Own, 8th), however this guy did not go to India and is not the same one. I have seen your site before, but will check it out again.

Its hard to imagine how hard life must have been on the western frontier, just the climate alone without hostilities would have been enough for most people.

Keep up the good work,

Duncan
Hello Duncan,

I was interested in seeing that John Hanagan served in the Afghan war. I am building a database of participants in the Second Anglo-Afghan campaign and it would be great to have John remembered on it. In return I can give you any information you may require about John's regiment in the war. What regiment was he in?

You can get more information on the project here:

http://www.angloafghanwar.info/marchtokandahar/kk_project.ph...

and feel free to contact me through the site as well, if you wish:

http://www.angloafghanwar.info/sitestuff/contact.php

Thanks, best wishes -
Garen.

Its seems like we are looking the same area, I have an Ann Hanagan who was the daughter of a John Hanagan, I first find her marrying a John Dowling in 1873 in Preston, England. He was in the army, he was born in Clonsast RC, in 1845. There is also a Charles Dowling who married a Mary Hanagan in the same area. Clonsast is in Offaly, but you can walk to kildare its so close. By chance I came across a couple of Hanagans in the Clonsast parish records in 1843, Bernard was born August 27, to Thos and Mary (could be yours), and James was born September 17, to Peter amd I think Margaret hard to read. John and Ann went out to Afghanistan and Pakistan at the time of the 2nd Afghan war and had lots of kids and returned to Kildare. I believe Charles and Marys son John went out to PA in 1893.

LDS film 0926109 is the Clonsast parish, it is in the LDS London branch, I am thinking of ordering it to my local Branch in North New Jersey.

Cassidy is another big name in the parish, and I have connections to that.

Duncan Still
I had an Uncle: Walter Hannagan, notice the spelling; who died in 1984-thought there might be a connection. He was 56 when he died. Old family history dates back into 1700's in Jasper County, Spec: Newton, Iowa. I don't know where the Walter name was brought into thr family. I do know that Hannagan was spelled many different ways. Any response to: ritahannagan@Ureach.com. THX
