This may sound a little scary. My heart fell to my feet when I saw your ad. I am related to the Hanaghues. My Great grandmother is Anna Hanaghue. Her mothers name was Margeret Hanaghue. Now She had many other siblings and one of them Michael. Their parents names were Patrick and winnifred Hanaghue. See we couldnt trace Michael any where we thought he remained in Ireland. Me and some family members have done alot of searching and it isnt easy but if it the same Michael then I will do my best to help.Listen thou your article kind of confussed me i figured i would take the time to write and see I am currious. Have a great day.

Melissa

Hi Julie,

I'm not sure if you are still on this site, but will put this out there. Are you referring to Catherine E. Hannahoe, b. 1/22/1875 in Corroy, Mayo Ireland and d. 9/11/1966, daughter of Bartholomew Hannahoe and Catharine Breslin Hannahoe? She married Jacob A. Klump on 11/26/1901 at St. Peter's Church in Reading PA. My great-grandmother was Mary Hannahoe, Catherine's older sister. I know of 7 other siblings beside Catherine and Mary. What is your connection to her?? I have other information regarding her mother and siblings. You can also email me at: mdyroff@mtsinai.k12.ny.us Hope to hear from you. Matt

I believe that Matthew Hanahoe and Sarah Touhill (Toole) were my great grandparents -- they had 7 children: Bridget (10/8/1895); Francis Joseph (8-25-1897) -- my grandfather; Martin (8-3-1903) -- the 1st PA State Trooper to be killed in the line of duty; Gertrude Hanahoe Reddington; Rosemary; Eleanor Cosgrove; Cyril. I believe Matthew and Sarah's parents were: Michael (June 1842, Ireland) and Mary Cavanaugh. They had 9 children.

Hi,

My name is Perri Cole Llewellyn and I just posted this same message to someone in this thread, but I thought I'd also send it to you, since we may be talking about the same line of Gilboys, and I didn't know if you'd see the other posting... The difference is that your Gilboys settled in PA and mine in Ohio. I'm not 100% sure that they didn't spend time in PA before ultimately going to Ohio - many people who ended up in OH were first in PA, so you never know.

My husband's great grandmother was a Hanahoe (they may have spelled it Hannaho or Hannahoe). I wonder, if I give you some details (and I have many), if you would let me know if this section of the family sounds familiar? This is a lot of info. - I'll try and make it simple:

Relatives say these people were from Co. Mayo, but John Hannaho may have originally been from Northern Ireland...

John Hannaho married Catherine Gilboy (she was from Co. Mayo). Catherine's siblings included: John, Mary, Ellen, Elizabeth, and Bryon/Bryan Gilboy. The siblings, and Catherine's mother (Gilboy, first name unknown) came to the US (Youngstown, Ohio), but Catherine stayed in Ireland and married John Hannaho.

John Hannaho and Catherine Gilboy Hannaho's children included (dates are rough. All of the Hannaho children came to the US except their daughter, Catherine, who stayed in Ireland and married Patrick Gallagher:

Catherine Hannaho b. 9/7/1870 Crosmolina Parish married Patrick Gallagher

Ann(a) Hannaho married Patrick Madden from Co. Cork

Mary Hannaho b. 1865 married John Dixon

Bridget Hannaho b. 1864 married Edward Dooher

Maggie Hannaho married Thomas McHugh

Ellen Hannaho b. 1872 married Michael McHugh (brother of Thomas, above)

John Hannaho

Catherine Hannaho (the second Catherine to stay in Ireland) married Patrick Gallagher . Their children included: Martin, Michael, Margarate, Bee(?), John, Mary and two others. As of 1940, the first four listed were living in England and John was a tailor in Co. Leitrim... Mary Gallagher (married??) stayed in Ireland.

Now, one more thing, or bit of family news (from pre-1900) that may have made it back to Ireland, and that may spark someone's memory... Mrs. Gilboy (first name unknown), the mother of Catherine Gilboy Hannaho born about 1920?? (the first Catherine I mentioned above, who stayed in Ireland) also emmigrated to the US (Ohio) and was killed by a train in Youngstown, Ohio near the Brier Hill Works steel mill (Arlington neighborhood)...

Anyway, I hope something rings a bell with someone looking for the Gilboys... I'm trying to find the Gilboy line as well as the Hannaho, (and the Patrick Madden line in Co. Cork - yeah, good luck, huh?).

I read the posting by Michael Hannaho and emailed him, but it was retruned undeliverable... I read about his family home near Crosmolina...I wonder if that's what my husband's now deceased aunt saw on a trip to Co. Mayo about 16 years ago in 1990 - she told someone she had seen a house with the Hanahoe name on it!! Just in case anyone is reading this who lives in the house...and in case she knocked on the door and talked to anyone (and in case they remember), her name was Mary Madden Barnes, daughter of Anna Hannaho Madden... Mary was travelling with her daughter Carol. Hey, ya never know...

I know about the heritage center in Crosmolina, and I will go there in May when we will be in Ireland - but, in the meantime, I just thought I'd see if these people sound familiar to you... They have to be related somehow...

Any help will be MUCH appreciated.

Kind regards,

Perri
Multiple Coincidences

Hi Eileen,

I have a funny feeling that we may be related, but I haven't quite puzzled out how.

My great grandmother was named Ellen Hanahue (sometimes spelled "Hanaghue" and probably about a half dozen other different ways. She was born around 1884 in Killala, Co. Mayo, and died in Sharon, Massachusetts in August, 1913. She was married to a man named Thomas Coyne, supposedly from Clifden, Co. Galway who was born on November 27, 1865.

I know very little about Ellen, who was called Nellie, because she died giving birth to my grandmother. Her parents are listed on her birth certificate as Patrick Hanahue and Winnie Ruddy Hanahue, both of Killala. The only siblinngs I know of for sure are a sister named Margaret (Sept. 3, 1875 - June, 1967) and a brother MIchael 1871 - ?)

Thomas Coyne's parents are listed on the birth certificate I have as Michael and Mary Coyne, although this has been questioned since I found someone else on line who says HIS Thomas Coyne was born to those parents on that date but his Thomas went to England and had a family instead of emigrating to the US. Since my Thomas was illilterate, it is very possible that this is the wrong birth certificate and he just never knew it.

Do you see any connections between my Hanahue Coynes and yours? The names and places are too coincidental for there to NOT be a connection somehow, although I can't quite figure out what the connection is (Hanaghue being a rather uncommon namee as I'm sure you must know)

Thanks a lot. I'd love to compare notes with you.

Mary Gorman
Amherst, Massachusetts

Hi Eileen,

I'm wondering if maybe your Anthony and my Patrick were brothers or something, since their dates match up a little better than the next generation. My g-grandmother Ellen had three children when she died: Anthony, Martin and Mary. Mary was my grandmother. It was her that Ellen died giving birth to, so there really is no oral history on that branch of the family, and precious little written records, either, since they the family was illiterate.

I don't think our Coynes match up. Besides the questionable birth certificate I have for Thomas Coyne, I know that Thomas had a brother Anthony who came over in 1899 and lived next door. The census record looks like it said Thomas came over in 1904, but it was hard to read. Thomas and Ellen's son Anthony was taken in by his uncle and his wife after Ellen died.

The birth certificate I have for Ellen's sister Margaret lists the place of birth as the parish of either Seeyhan or Deeyhan - it's hard to mak out the wriiting - in Killala. I don't have any papers on Ellen other than a death certificate, but somehow I ended up inheriting Margaret's birth certificate.

This feels like a very rambling post. I think I'm probably trying to drop any hints I can think of to help you make the connection, but don't really know what to focus on.

At any rate, good luck! I'll let you know if I find any new leads and hope you'll do the same.

Mary Gorman
mgorman@k12s.phast.umass.edu

Don't worry about the delay, genealogy is like that - long periods of nothing, then suddenly a bunch of pieces that (hopefully) fall into place and lead you to the next long period of nothing.

My sense is that we probably are related and that if either of us could get just one generation further back, it might click and everything would be obvious, but Irish records being what they are, that could be tricky. Would it help you if I sent you copies of the birth certificates I have here? I think my Hanahues are more likely to be related to you than my Coynes are, but you never know.

Good luck!

Mary

I have currently become stuck at a certain point in my family tree and require some help. My grandfather is Thomas Gerard Conroy, son of Bridget Hanahoe and Denis Conroy. I have been told that I am related to Tony Hanahoe the football player from Ireland somehow but I am having difficulty making the connection.

I am assuming that Tony is the son of one of Bridgets brothers but have been unable to find a definate record for Bridget anywhere. If anyone can help at all then please let me know! The only two Hanahoe names I have heard mentioned are Tony and Bridget, I don't know much about them.

Thanks,

Matt

My computer would not allow me to send back a message to the address as it came over.

Thank you for the tips on Rinagry. I will try to locate Kinnard or Richmond on a map and compare it.

My g-grandfater was Michael Hanahoe. He was baptized in the Parish of Backs, Diocese of Killala on Sept 27, 1863 by Father P. Kelly. His sponsors were his future wife's grandparents - Mr & Mrs Anthony Ferguson. Michael's parents were Anthony Hanahoe and Bridget nee Joyce Hanahoe. Anthony & Briget Hanahoe had at least 3 other children that I have located ... Cate (Catherine?) born 1861, Pat born 1866 and Anne born 1868. Godparents were Peter and Mary Hughes, Pat Grehom and Judy Halleron.

Does any of this sound familiar?
Mary: I'm sorry to take so long getting back to you. I've really seemed to hit a brick wall with my search. Patrick and Anthony are possibly brothers - Anthony did have a son Patrick in @1866 who died. Maybe he named him for a brother. The only thing that I found for sure was that Anthony's residence was listed as Runagry. I haven't been able to locate where exactly that is but I know that it is in the Parish of Backs in Co Mayo. I'm still checking and I'll let you know if I find anything. Eileen

I will definitely contact the Heritage Center in Crosmolina.

As for Runagry, I believe it is in Ballynahaglish Parish. I found the name Runagry under the catholic parish records for Backs. I'm assuming that it is very near Carrowgrarve as my g-grandparents (Michael Hanahoe and Ellen Coyne)were neighbors there. Both were baptized in the Parish of Backs.

I have found that my g-grandfather Michael Hanahoe's parents were Anthony Hanahoe and Bridget Joyce. I have found record of several offspring ... Catherine (b=@1861), Pat (b=@1866), Anne or Anna (b=@1868)and Michael (b=1863). There may be more ... I'm still researching. Do any of these names sound familiar?

Thanks as always for your kind help. Eileen

Mary:

I'm sure we are related - Somehow'!!

I'm finally beginning to make a little progress on my hunt and still have a ways to go. I did find my Coynes and Hanahoes on the Baptismal / Marriage records for the Parrish of Backs in Killala, Co Mayo. I am not yet thru the list but had to stop until Jan. I'm using the research room at the LDS in Wilm, De which closes until 1/01. I did find that my Hanahoe side is: Anthony Hanahoe married Bridget Joyce . So far I found children listed as Catherine (1861), Michael my g-grandfather (1863), Pat (1866) and Anne (1868). One of my great aunts remembers that there may be a sister Mary along with others. She did say that Mary helped to raise Michael as his mother died young. The records show that they lived in Runagry. Haven't yet been able to find it on a map. Not sure if it was an abbreviation of something else.

As far as the Coynes go, Mary Ferguson married Michael Coyne. Children I have found so far are: Winnie (1845), Patt(1848), Bridget (1850), Biddy (1853), Patrick (1856), Anthony (1857), Anthony (1859), Ellen - my g-grandmother (1861), Mary (@1862), Anne (1864), Nora (@1872), Elizabeth Margaret (date unknown).

I know that quite a few of Ellen Coyne's siblings came to the US. At least a few settled in the Philadelphia area. Patrick did stay in Ireland but his son Michael did come over and married a girl from Cherry Hill, NJ. What do you think? Eileen

Michael:

I have found on birth records from the Parrish of Backs that my g-g-grandfather Anthony Hanahoe lived in Runagry. Are you familiar with this area? Also, Anthony's son Michael married Ellen Coyne who's family resided in Carragorra (not exactly sure of the spelling.) I can't find either of these places on a map, etc. Do you have any knowledge of where I might find more? Thanks again for your help. Eileen

Dear Michael
My name as you have probably guessed already is Marcus, I am a 20 year old student in the Queen's University of Belfast. My family live in Dublin and the furthest my family history goes back is to my Grandfather another Michael Hanahoe whom funnily enough has a son also called Michael, and a grandson called Michael, (as families go we are not very original when it comes to choosing names). Considering the amount of effort you have gone to judging from your knowledge of our family tree i trust you probably know of them already. I was wondoring if you could possibly e-mail me with any information you have on our family tree, i feel a little ignorant having such a unique surname and not knowing anything about it.
Marcus

Dead Eileen .
I wish you all the success in tour reserach but you will find it very difficult. The Hanahoe Family prior to the 1900's were a very back ward sort of people( info I have gatherd from elders)They didnt know any English , or reading or writing.
I have searched the graves in the family graveyard in Killmurry , Crosmolina co mayo , but could only go back 5 generations as back then only the rich could get Head stones.
I will try to do a bit of talking to the old Hanahoes and see if they know anything else from their grandparents.

Your best bet in researching the family name would be to start in Crosmolina in the Heritage center , then work your way down to Belmulit and the prehistoric Ceidge fields.

Another good place to try would be ballina in mayo . There is a big hill there with small ruins localyu known as " Hanahoes hill"

Best of luck
Michael.

Dear Eileen,
You are probulary a distant relation to me
because most of the Hanahoes in Ireland today (where I live ) are related to each other in some way - I can trace my direct roots back to the 1500's where they lived in Blacksod in Bellmulit ,co Mayo .Towards the late 1600's Most of the Hanahoe moved up north Mayo to Killilla and Crosmolina where most reside today. I have never heard of your families names being mentioned , but Michael Hanahoe (Micheal O anoue - in irish) is my great great grandfather 1700 - 1870 RIP.
Hanahoe / Hanaghue

I am searching for information on my great-grandparents, Michael Hanahoe and Ellen (nee Coyne) Hanahoe. I have baptism records of an unknown source for both. They were baptized in the Parish of Backs, Diocese of Killala.

Michael was born to Anthony and Bridget (nee Joyce) Hanahoe on 9/25/1863. His godparents were Anthony and M.Ferguson (Ellen's grandparents).

Ellen was born to Michael and Mary (nee Ferguson) Coyne on 10/20/1861. Her godparents were Patrick Walsh and Winefred Coyne.

Ellen had 9 sisters and one brother. I know the names of some - Patrick (the only sibling to stay in Ireland that we know of), Elizabeth, Winnie, Nora, Mary, Margaret, Bridget, Anna. Not sure of others.

Ellen and Michael came to the US from County Mayo between 1883 1886. I do not think that they came together. I do not believe that they were married yet when they came over. They were neighbors in Co Mayo from what one relative remembers.

If anyone can provide and further details, I would really appreciate it. Thanks. Eileen

Hi Michael,

I think we're cousins. My grandfather, Patrick Carolan was from Crossmolina and I've heard of Fr Tommy mentioned many times in the past. I think my great grandmothers name was Bridget Hanahoe. Could he be the same Fr. Tom?

Michael, I realize that this is an old email, but I am looking for information about my Catherine Hanahoe from Co. Mayo, Ireland. She came here at the age of 17 with sibillings (i think). She settled in PA, maybe reading. She married a man named Jacob Klump from the Bavarian Alps of Germany. I've seen the message boards and know there is a relation some how, but I can't quite find the link. Any help would be great!

Dear Eileen,
I have never heard of the place called
Runagry.What county is it in?
The place Carragorra (spelling Carrowgarve)
is in mid-north mayo about 6 miles out side
Crosmolina,about 16 miles from Ballina.
It is a 10 mile radius of bog and forest with only 10-15 people living there
today.I know the place very well because my
grandparents live there in the "family home" there.
My family arrived to Carrowgrave in the 1600's
from Bellmulit,Blacksod.
Carrowgarve is very bleak these days because
most people have emmigrated.Despite this I
always visit 2 or 3 times a year to see
my relations. For move information it is well
worth getting in to contact with the Heritage
center in Crosmolina co Mayo

Regards

Michael Hanahoe

Michael, You seem like you are a wealth of information on the Hanahoes so I am hoping you maybe able to help me out with my hanahoe.

She is my great grandmother and came to Berks, Reading PA with her family when she was a girl. I have a record that she passed in 1966 on Sep 11th. She married Jacob Klump(p) and had several Children: Charles Edward b. 1909 (my grandfather), Kathryn, John, William, Paul aka "hank" b. 1911 and Dolly. Jacob was from Bavaria, Germany. I am looking for more info on the Hanahoe lineage. Do you know of my Catherine?

Hello,

I am related to Catherine Hanahoe that came here with her 6 sisters and 2 brothers by boat. All but four of them settled in Reading, PA. I don't know a couple of the sibiling's names. Does any of this sound familiar? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Julie
