My husband is related to Francis Slade Hancher through his Mother, born Carolyn Elizabeth Slade in Baltimore, Maryland in 1906. We do not know if Francis Slade Hancher every legally changed his name, but started using the name Slade after living with his uncle in Reistertown, Maryland.

Carolyn Elizabeth Slade married John C. Proctor in 1929 in New York City. My husband is Dr. John H. Proctor their eldest child.

He was born Francis Slade Hancher in 1879 in West Virginia. His father was Newton W. Hancher (1843-1926), his mother was Ann R. L. Slade (1848 -??). She died young and he went to live with her brother in Maryland. There is a sister named Anna and a sister named Ona. I can trace them, but Francis/Frank kept changes his name on subsequent Census Records. He is sometimes Slade Hancher, Frank Hancher, Frank Slade, Francis Hancher. We do not know when or where he died. He is my husband's grandfather and we know very little about him.

To Jan Hinshaw:
I am very surprised but delighted to have any response after such a long time - 5 years regarding the background on Francis Slade Hancher. We have been at a loss for years trying to find out what happened to him. We believe we have pictures of Newton Hancher. We are trying to discern if Francis Slade every remarried or had other children before his death. My husband and his sister are the only know survivors of this line.

I am directly descended from Thomas Bright and his first wife Eleanor (Ellen) Davis, both of Belmont Co, OH. (I have not yet taken this back any further). According to a family document that has been passed down: The children of Thomas and Ellen were: John Bright (who later moved to Brown Co, IN and then by covered wagon to Wayne Co, IL) and had at least one son referred to as "Johnny"; daughter Mary (believed to have married Mr. Satterthwaite and had son Tillus)also removed to Wayne Co, IL; and daughter Elizabeth Amelia Bright who married John Howerth in Belmont Co, OH on 09 AUG 1850, also migrated from Belmont Co, OH to Brown Co, IN in 1853; then in 1874 migrated, along with her brother John Bright and his family, by covered wagon to Wayne Co, IL., then in 1886 moved to Bartholomew Co, IN. According to my family notes: "The brothers of grandpa Thomas Bright were Fleming and Henry Bright." No mention is ever made of any sisters. As for offspring of Thomas Bright: "Their (Thomas and Eleanor) children were John Bright, Elizabeth Amelia Bright, and Mary Bright. After the death of his first wife, Thomas married Miss Hancher. To this union were born Billy, George, and Carrie Bright."

From the name this sounds like she was probably Martha Rankin, third wife of John Hinshaw. However if so then she was not born in the early 1900s - Martha Rankin married John Hinshaw May 4 1893. John died only 9 years later in 1902. See:
http://www.blueneptune.com/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/hinshaw/id?1929

Jan Hinshaw
hinshaw@blueneptune.com
Hi Richard,
I just saw your post about the Phifer family. I have nothing on the parents of Martha Lidy Phifer, but have a little information on her.
This came from the copy of their marriage certificate that was in Jacob's Civil War Pension File. Martha Lidy Shetler was born Jan. 21, 1840 in Ohio. She married Jacob Shetler on Sept. 17, 1860 in Mount Vernon, Knox Co. OH. She died Mar. 21, 1931 in Hemingford, NE.
She was my husband's great grandmother. It sounds like you are from her same line, right? I'm sitting here trying to figure out which one of the children you are from, :)
If you have anything on the parents of Martha, I would be very happy to have it.
Thanks so much,
Karen Walk

Still researching for the parents of Elizabeth Ann Hancher who married Alfred Gray on 7 May 1833 in Blountville, Sullivan TN.. Elizabeth was born 4 Aug 1816 in Blountville, Sullivan TN I believe her father may be William Hancher and her mother Sarah Nicely.

Francis Hancher

Looking for information on Francis Hancher, b. early 1880s perhaps in MD. After the death of his mother, the children were separated and he was raised by his maternal uncle, Dr. William Slade in Reistertown, MDd. Francis later changed his name legally from Hancerh to Slade. Francis could also have been in the medical field. He married Mary Arabella Cox in 1903 in Baltimore and had two children: Robert and Carolyn. The couple divorced and we lost all track of Francis Hancher Slade. Rumor is his mother was originally from W.VA.

I have Rebecca in the 1850 census for Knox Co OH page 428 with husband Michael. She is 51 b. VA, he is 54 b. PA. They have children (all b. OH) Crary 23, Jacob J. 21, Margaret R 17, William C 14, Mary R 12, Martha L 9, Elizabeth 4. I have their marriage record 21 Jan 1821, Ohio Co, VA.

Curtis Bright was raising a largish family inthat area and I had (based on proximity) assumed she was a daughter of his (Curtis b. 12 July 1775 or 1771, VA; died 22 Feb 1859, Meigs Co, OH).

I would welcome information that would completely and accurately define Curtis' family, and of course, his ancestry.
