Martha Jane Curlis was born in Brown County, Ohio on March 26th, 1821. She married Benjamin Applegate on April 22nd, 1837. They were married in a Methodist Church.
They had thirteen children. In 1909 Seven children were still alive, three boys and four girls. For the past eight years she had lived with her daughter, Mrs. Jennie Hancock in Champion, NE. On february six she fell and fractured her hip, it was the cause of her death. Her age was 88 years old.

Baby Irene Hancock was the Adopted child of Charles and Jennie Hancock. They adopted her from The Nebraska Childrens Home Society, of Omaha. She died on August 13th,1903 age 6 months.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F., Rebeka, M.W.A, and A.O.U.W. lodges.
He was one of the pioneer residents of Chase County, NE.
Having arrived in the Spring of 1886 and seen the hardships of the early settlement of the county.
In the Fall of 1907 he was elected County Commissioner.
Funeral Services were held in the Presbyterian church at Champion wednesday afternoon under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. lodge of which he was a honored member. The funeral was preached by Rev. Haggerty, a brother Odd Fellow, and the remains laid to rest in the Champion cemetery.
It was one of the largest attended funerals ever held in the county, more than one-half of the people being unable to gain admittance to the church.
The court house was closed Wednesday and the session of the Board of County Commissioners adjourned Monday as a mark of respect to an honored member.
Mr. Hancock was a loving husband and father, a faithful and true friend and will be greatly missed by the community.

Nathanial S. Hancock was born in 1832 in Licking County, Ohio. He moved west and followed the settlements up to Seward County, NE, coming to Chase County, NE. in March of 1886.
Very much impaired in health, from which his decease was the end. Friday August 6th, 1886. He was 54 yrs. old.
He leaves a large family consisting of wife and grown up children to mourn his death, as well as the entire community, who express deep sympathy.
He was a member of the Christian church. He called his weeping family around him directed his own burial and that it should be simple and plain, his grave to be on his own claim and to be interred without waiting the coming of any absent relatives.
