Tabitha,

My Hancocks are from southern Pulaski OCunty near McCreary.
I believe in the 1930's they moved to Floyd County and settled in Wayland. I know my Hancocks moved there to work in the coal mines. I've been trying to trace my hancocks back beyond my GGgrand father for years, but it's a dad end for some reason. My GGgrandfathers name was also George.

1880 Lincoln, Linn Co., KS son Franklin Trigg listed as head of household.

I found ref. to 1883 Pensioners of Linn Co.; John Trigg, LaCygne, Chr. Dar. $4.00 Oct. 1882

So I'm thinking John is still alive in 1882, but why is he not listed in 1880 census?

1711: Several events led to the Tuscarora War. When the Tuscarora of North Carolina killed John LAWSON, sticking him all over with pitch pine splinters before setting him ablaze, what followed was the most deadly Indian war in North Carolina. Chief John HANCOCK, from Catechna (near today's Grifton) led the Tuscarora in an attack of New Bern and other settlements in northern Carolina. Some reports say he led the Neusiok and Olgonquin speaking Indians, neither group being Tuscarora. Hundreds of settlers were killed. Their homes and crops were destroyed. The upper Tuscarora, led by a half-breed named Tom BLOUNT, turned on the lower Tuscarora led by Chief HANCOCK. BLOUNT turned Chief HANCOCK over to the settlers who hung him. Between 1711 and 1713 some three hundred Cherokee helped colonial forces drive the Tuscarora Indians northward to the Great Lakes region. (s)

We are nearly neighbors. I grew up between Bowling Green and Frostproof.My wife's Ggrandmother was from Chicora and married a Hancock.

How are you related to my dad? I met uncle Fred a few times as a child and Georgia once or twice too. My didn't talk much about his family and did not get along with his siblings so we rarely saw them. I knew my dad was married before my mom but whenever I asked about it, he would simply reply that some things should just stay in the past. I have a photo album of a family that I found in my father's things. The album is full of people I have never seen. I suspect these are the pictures of my half brother and sister as children. I also have another half brother, Mark, who lives in Marysville, WA. He doesn't have the Hancock last name as he was adopted by his step father and took that last name instead. We lost contact with him after my father died. He passed away on July 12, 2002 in Portland, OR. He slipped and fell in the bathroom, hit his head and passed away. He was a wonderful and loving father to me and my sister.

Hi – I have just begun researching possible links to the Hancock branch of my mother’s family. Surnames are Hancock and Speigner. They are from Geneva & Houston Counties in south Alabama. There were rumors that we were linked to THE John Hancock, but other posts on several message boards tend to discount that possibility. If so it says she's 7 years old, so that'd make her born abt 1922-23, not 1929. If she was born in 1929 she would have been 1 in the 1930 Census. Maybe that will help in locating her.

my grandfather Fredrick Warren Hancock used to tell a story about the hancock's having come out west on a wagon train that left out of either mid or southern missouri. when following the tree back wards i find a Melvin Carl Hancock born in texas, having married an Ethel Anne Stratton from Missouri and then moving west into Colorado before their children later ended up in Oregon and Washington State. I haven't found any records yet of who gg-grandpa might have been

Melvin married Ethel Anne Stratton who was from Rockville, Missouri and they both later died in a car accident in Gold Hill, Jackson County, Oregon. William Elwood Hancock was my grandfather's brother. My grandfather Fredrick Warren Hancock was born in Payson Arizona and died a few years ago in Olympia Washington. William passed away a couple years ago down around Portland Oregon. His two daughters Annie and Charlotte are on facebook. I passed this post along to them, I hope you are still online. I have a Melvin Carl Hancock Born 04 July 1891 in Seymour, Baylor Texas. Died: 01 Aug 1957 in Gold Hill, Oregon.

I do not know who his father was or whether he had any siblings. Melvin Carl Hancock's Maternal grandparents were living in Oklahoma but my cousin has misplaced that information.

Melvin married Ethel Anne Stratton and they had 6 children.

Pearl and M C Hancock & Melvin show up in the Oklahoma 1900 Census as living in Marlow, Chickasaw Indian Territory

Melvin Carl Hancock then appears in the 1910 Census as living with his Grandfather William Joseph "Joe" Hargrove and Grandmother Suda [Sudie] Hargrove in Tillman Oklahoma.

Prior to 1900 I have not found record of Pearl & M C Hancock, nor whether they had any other children.

After 1900 both of Melvin Carl Hancock's parents disappear.

And I haven't yet found the Hargrove connection to this family line.

The print out I received from the Historical Research Center years ago says:

There are two possible explanations for the origin of the English surname Hancock. In the first instance, the surname may be patronymic in origin, being one of those surnames based on the first name of a father and in this instance the surname means simply "son of John", being derived from the Flemish "Hann", meaning "John", or perhaps from the French "Henri". The suffix "cock" was added to indicate affection or familiarity.

Alternatively, the surname may be local in origin, being one of those surnames derived from the place where a man once lived or held land. Here, the surname would mean "of Hencot" or "of Hengoed", referring to place names in Shropshire and as such would indicate that the original bearer of the surname may have come from one of these places in medieval times.

Before the advent of the hereditary system of surnames, it was not unusual to name a person according to where they came from as it provided a simple form of identification and distinguished the original bearer from others in the same community.

Some early instances of the surname include "Thomas Hancoc" who was recorded in the "Hundred Rolls" for Shropshire in 1274 and also "Robert Hancok" who was recorded in the "Poll Tax Returns" for Yorkshire in 1397.

The prevalence of the surname over the years is substantiated by the "London Commercial and Court Directory" of 1870 which recorded 49 instances of the surname there.

A notable bearer of the surname includes "Winfield Scott Hancock" [1824-1886], an American soldier who achieved fame at the battle of Gettysburg in 1863.

Variants of the name include: Handcock, Hancocks and Hancox.

MOLINE, Ill. -- Adele Hancock, 85, Moline, died Friday, March 19, 2004 at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley, Ill.

Memorial services were at First Evangelical Free Church, Moline. A private family burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.

Visitation was at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd. Moline. Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Free Church or New Kingdom Trail Riders.

She was born Sept. 26, 1918, in New Windsor, Ill., the daughter of Axel and Augusta Johnson Youngberg. She married Harley Hancock May 22, 1937, in Cambridge, Ill.

She graduated from the Sterling School of Cosmetology and was a beautician in her own home for several years.

She was a member of First Evangelical Free Church, where she had taught Sunday school for many years.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Dora Rose and husband, Kenneth, of Moline; a son, Jim Hancock and wife, Diane, of Muscatine; three grandchildren, Jill Mather and husband, Nathan, of New York City, Erica Erickson and husband, Karl, of Mount Prospect, Ill., and Austin 'A.J.' Hancock of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Edward Youngberg.
