Hi Gang,
I've had a thought, but I don't know if I have the time to organise it. To help track our HANDS, especially for the novice researcher, should we have a database (spreadsheet) that we continually email around, listing according to the 1851 census:
1) heads of houlsehold only, present in Great Britain, supported by wife's name if there are perhaps 2 James' around for example
2) Village or Parish
3) email address of researcher
For security, only those subscribed to this list get to play.
I would suggest that the software would be OpenOffice2, being open source, and free. Rather than the perhaps more well known, but not free, spreadsheets.
OO2 works in a very similar style to the famous one. However, it is able to save in the new cross platform filetype, so will run on Macs, Linux or Windows machines, with no messing.
For those rebellious enough to consider not using the famous software try
http://www.openoffice.org/Plan B would be for someone to spare a page on a website.
Your thoughts please, positive or negative.
Kind regards
Mike
