Hi Cathy, Thanks for replying, and thankyou for the info you have sent. I am not sure if we are connected. My gt grandfather, Joseph Hands is a mystery. I have a marriage cert. It states, he married Caroline Manning on 12 Oct 1890, at Shoreditch, London, when he was age 22. But the 1901 Census, when he was living 4 Cavendish Street, Shoreditch, with wife and children, states, he is age 30. So I'm trying to work that one out!!! Was he born in 1868, or 1871. It is causing a problem, when trying to find out when he was born etc. Well, I'm sure I will get there in the end, as I will not give up my searching. Good luck with your searching. from Joan Harvey (nee Hands) from Erith, Kent.

Hi Joan,

The other William seems to be equally elusive.

I have emailed my contact for further info. I'm not sure if he got any further.

Also try for Joseph's age on the 1911 census - just to see if he remembered what he said last time.

Both the silversmith and the jeweller are likely to have left a will. Those MAY say where their children were living.

Plan B. (Always have a plan B.) Birmingham register office employ their own genealogist. In fact we had a talk from him on Tuesday evening. very friendly and helpful. Take all your known information for Joseph and ask for a birth certificate, for the various ages, give or take one year, father's occupation should be in the "trade", so silversmith and jeweller should be acceptable.

You might end up with 3 certificates. But considering Joseph is your direct ancestor it's probably worth the money. (Just hope he is not adopted or a foundling!)

All for now

Mike

Hi Mike, Thank you for your kind response. It's very frustrating, that I cannot get any further back than my gt grandfather, Joseph. Why would Philip William HANDS avoid census? Perhaps he was living abroad at them times. Also there is discrepancy with Joseph HANDS age. Marriage cert, states, age 22, in 1890, then 1901 census, age 30. Why would he lie?? William HANDS is the name of his father (a jeweller) on marriage cert. I only connected PHILIP WILLIAM HANDS, as may be his father, because of the names WILLIAM and also FLORENCE (name connections). But there is nobody in the family line with the name of PHILIP. So perhaps that is the complete wrong line, who knows?? It is so annoying. Perhaps it is best to find someone tracing the same family line, to help with this problem. Many thanks again for your help. Joan Harvey (nee HANDS)

Hi Joan,

Did you notice Florence's age? She was only 27, and Joseph was 13!!!

Then there was a 7 year gap and then children every 2 years. I think this was a second marriage for Philip.

Regardless, I can't find any marriage for Philip William on FreeBMD or WMBMD apart from one in Shrewsbury in 1871. Nor can I find him in the 1851, 1861, 1891 or 1901 census. There was one in 1841 whose father William was jeweller. Philip William does appear on FreeBMD in September quarter of 1838.

HO107; Piece 1141; Book: 14; Civil Parish: St George; County: Warwickshire; Enumeration District: 39; Folio: ; Page: 3; Line: 17;

I think you are looking at a number of possibilities:

1) a mis-transcription
2) avoidance of the census
3) technical: not filmed or not indexed.

All for now

Mike
Hi Mike, Thanks very much for your quick reply and the info you have given, but still not sure about it. I came across, in the 1881 census, a Philip William HANDS,(a jeweller) married to Florence, living Birmingham (Kingsland). They have a son Joseph, age 13. Could this be the family? Not sure. But when Joseph was married to Caroline Manning (1901 census, and living in Shoreditch London), their first born child was named Florence (born 1891).So Florence may be a clue, to this connection. But still not sure. Many thanks for your help. Joan Harvey (nee Hands)

So I don't think I can, at this time, help specifically, but might I suggest you post Jeremiah's details to my newish HANDS research website. http://yourhands.awardspace.com/

You will find contact details and what to do on the site.
Hi Joan,

I was working on his dad William when your posting arrived. I THINK I may have found him. Try RG10; Piece: 3120; Folio: 16; Page: 26 in what looks like Mott Street, a silver smith. The problem is that he was 21 and appears to have a wife, Selina, of 37, with 3 girls. (Toy Boy.) The eldest being 13 years!!! I can't find then in 1881.

A national search, on FreeBMD for William HANDS and Selina, between 1845 and 1872 only gives two hits. Both in Aston, Birmingham.

1) Dec Q 1850 William HANDS and Selina HAND (NO "S")
2) Mar Q 1852 William HANDS and Selina SUTTON

If it's the first one I KNOW a descendant/relative. He's my webmaster for our branch website! The trouble is I only know of 3 daughters.
Hi Mike, Would you have any info on my gt grandfather, Joseph HANDS, born Birmingham. I now have his marriage cert, which you had advised me to apply for, previously. He married Caroline Manning on 12 Oct 1890 at Shoreditch, London, when age 22. It states that his father is William HANDS, a jeweller. But the 1901 census, when living at 4 Cavendish Street, Shoreditch (St Lukes) with wife and children, states he is age 30. So he must have told some porky pies, for whatever reason. So it is a puzzle, as to was he born 1868 or 1871 etc. I would be very grateful for any info you may have, to help in my searching. Many thanks.
Hi Cathy,

My interests are twofold. One is that the name is HANDS and secondly a distant branch of my lot were in the area, about half a mile a way, from where Henry T was born. (I had trouble with the spelling of his place of birth. I think it should be Brettel Lane, Kingswinford, Staffordshire. Still can't find the family in 1851.)

From FreeBMD I think Sophia's was probably HODSON, December quarter, 1868, Warrington. A similar type of search for Wiliam's parents only comes up with a likely marriage in Kings Norton. (Not happy with this one.)

If you haven't got Henry T.'s birth certificate I think you need to get it. (Nothing on the IGI or FreeREG.) Although not on FreeBMD try the local register offices for his parent's marriage. Sorry the family aren't in my database. And tread carefully in Birmingham!

Cheers

Mike
Hi, I am searching for my gt gt grandfather, William HANDS, a jeweller, from Birmingham. His son is Joseph HANDS, my gt grandfather, born about 1870, in Birmingham, a glove cutter, and was married to Caroline Manning, in 1890, at St John the Baptist Church in Hoxton, Shoreditch, Middlesex, London. Their children were Florence, Joseph, Charles Albert, (my grandfather, born 8 Jan 1897, St Lukes, Holborn, London), Elizabeth, Grace, Rosina, Henry, Ernest. Is there any connection to your HANDS family. I cannot seem to get any further back, than William HANDS. I always thought HANDS was an unusual name, but apparently not so in the Birmingham area.
Please do contact me on s3_hope@hotmail.co.uk as my great grandmother Mary Ludlam nee Walker of Marton, had I think, a sister who married a Hands, the journeyman (nephew?)for the blacksmith Mr Hands(see 1881 census). I know my grandfather Albert Edward John Ludlam was visited by Uncle Hands in Coventry in 1918 as it is referred to in a letter to his brother in Australia. I was born and grew up in Coventry, but live now near B'ham. I have walked around Marton a few times recently, looking for graves etc, but have just found that Mary died in 1900 in Leamington Spa (where her brother ran a Lodging House), and her husband Albert Ludlam died of a stroke at age 47 in 1878, and is buried in Welford Road, Leicester along with his parents,
Please do get in touch
Regards
Sue

Hi Folks,

In our family tree that stretches well over 500 years, actually more likely 700, I thought new researchers should be aware of the surname variants from the Yardley and Arden areas of Warwickshire that then moved over to Tardebigge, Redditch and Bromsgrove areas of Worcestershire:-

Le HENDE
HANNON - documentary evidence - with no Irish connection
HANNE
HANNES
HANDS

Other variants seen:

HANDES
HANS
HANNS

The surname HAND occasionally becomes HANDS. Whether this was an error or true transformation is unknown. Even rarer is the truncation of HANDS to HAND. In fact I have only seen this twice. Again the root cause is unknown.

I have also heard that there may also be movement of "HANDS" from the low countries.

I would welcome any contact regarding the name or likely connection

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike

Sorry for this late reply to your message, which is very helpful and much appreciated. I will apply for my great grandparents birth cert, (the HANDS), as you suggested.

You have mentioned about setting up a family tree search type thing, for the HANDS FAMILY, (if that makes sense), sorry, I've only had my computer for 2 months, and still learning. All this modern technology is a bit above me, at present, But I'm getting there. It sounds interesting, and hopefully, if I am able, I would like to be involved.

If you could let me have any further info on this set up for the HANDS family, please let me know.

Thanks again for your help, its much appreciated.

Joan Harvey (nee HANDS)
from Erith, Kent

Hands family of Marton, Warwickshire

Marton is a small village that lies between Coventry and Rugby, and was in the mid 1800's quite a busy little place. My maternal Great-Grandmother Mary Ludlam nee Walker, had a number of relatives marrying into the Hands family. At one point the Hands Family were the village blacksmith and journeymen, farmer, baker and grocer in nearby villages. I know from a letter written on Christmas Day 1918 to the Australian Ludlam family that Uncle Hands was still living in Marton at that time.
Are there any descendants out there?

Dear Mike:
Thank you for the prompt response on Harry Hands. The separation from his family is an intriguing aspect to the story. When I was quite young, Grandfather Harry's sister Kate (married name, Kipling) visited Canada and I met her briefly. Until now, I had the impression there were just the two children, Harry and Kate. Now the fascinating questions, in addition to father William, are, what became of Matilda Warner Kimber and Kate Kipling?
This is my first foray into family spadework and I can already see why it is so fascinating. Cheers, Dave

My name is David Ross Hands. Harry Hands was my grandfather. He was born in 1870 in Poonah, India and married Mary A. Picken in Newcastle in 1892. They emigrated to Canada in 1911 (approx.)They had three children, Mabel, Harry Jr. Hilda and William (my father).
I believe my great-grandfather's name was William. He would have served with the British Expeditionary Force in India. I have reason to believe his father's name was originally Lavin or Lavan from Ireland. If anyone out there can add detail to the Lavin/Hands connection, I would be most grateful

Mike ,

Many thanks for your suggestions. Have found my ancestors James and Mary Ann in 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses but can't see anything about parishes where they were born. My info about their wedding was found on familysearch.org and I also found there a mention of a Mary Ann Hands born again in St. Martin in 1796. Of course, have wondered if this is the same Mary Ann.

Incidentally are parish records for Birminghan now available online or is it a matter of consulting the records in person? I have many family connections from the area and wonder how to progress my research to before 1837.

Hi,

Is there a clue about her parents - from the marriage witnesses, please?

St. Martin was used by a lot of people 'popping' in from the countryside. From later censuses which parish was your Mary Ann born in? Use more than one census, if you can, since localities changed their names or importance.

Also there are some records of other HANDS family members living further down the street or around the corner.

Cheers

Mike

Hi,

Ignoring the 1841, which isn't hugely useful in this respect, go to the 1851 and the parish of birth is the second column from the right. The end one is "Whether Blind or Deaf-and-Dumb". Get back if you still have a problem.

They are not going on-line as far as I know. You must still see the image in person. But you can do that in Australia or where ever. Two ways:

1) BMSGH set of CDs http://www.bmsgh.org/bookshop/warw/wa_birm_par.html

2) The LDS (FamilySearch people) filmed the registers so in most countries on the planet you can hire in a copy of the register(s) on the film. If you can't get to Birmingham go to http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp for your local centre. Discuss with them the time frame of the registers before ordering a film, as several registers may be on each film.

There is also the Greater Birmingham Marriage Index, 1776-1837. BMSGH again. Either visit their library in Birmingham or http://www.bmsgh.org/search/GBMIndex.html

If you join BMSGH http://www.bmsgh.org/ you will get discounts. (There are several branches in the Midlands. Entry is free to all for members.)

Researching pre-1837 is where you earn your spurs. There are very many different resources, wills, probate, militia records, estate records, quarter sessions, etc, etc. The list is quite large. But you have to be methodical - results will not come anywhere near as quickly as you have found so far. You will find records that look right, but you must also search for records that disprove you theories. (E.g. suppose you find 3 Mary Ann HANDS alive in the same village at the same time, and one dies - but which one????)

There are many books and much internet advice. Make sure you are reading about English records. Joining a society is good since you can bounce ideas off people much easier than this way.

Don't forget to re-post when you have more information.

Good luck

Mike

Hi Folks,

I have come across a Richard HANDS on my patch,
but he was from Weston sub Edge. He was an Ag. Lab. living in Ipsley, Headless Cross, Redditch, Worcestershire. Although in 1841 he probably was in Warwickshire, even if he didn't move house.

In 1841 Richard was 45 yrs and Allis (sic) was 40 (Also present were George HANDS 10, George HUNT 14 and Charlotte HUNT 10) Street address = Mount Pleasant None were born county.
In 1851 Richard was 63 yrs and Alice was 52, from Morton Bagot, Warwickshire. (A hamlet east of Studley, WAR). Street address = Mount Pleasant. No sign of George

I'll vote on the 1851 for Richard's age, so he was born around 1788.

All for now

Mike

Happy New Year Joan,

If you are new to computers and genealogy I would suggest joining your local family history society. Very often it doesn't matter that you have no one locally. The point is there should be lots of free advice on both subjects. (Many of my members in Bromsgrove haven't a local connection, but they still learn a lot from the range of subjects our speakers talk on.)

When you have done your spade work, my plan is that researchers submit ALL their HANDS heads of households from the 1851 census, plus address and parish of birth, along with their email address. Other researchers can then have an on-line resource or email list to make connections. The reason for this is the extreme complexity of the various family groups in the West Midlands. Final details are still to be sorted but there is no point in me doing this if no one is interested.

In the mean time, I would be most grateful if you would send me a copy of your HANDS family tree, once you have proved your line pre-1840. Your computer family tree program should have the facility to export files in not only it's own format but one known as GEDCOM. I think all manufacturers these days can import this type of file. It makes look ups so much easier.

Again, if you need more advice, just ask. (It pays dividends in the long run.)

Kind regards

Mike

Hi Joan,

The 1851 plan hasn't got off the ground yet. Anyway Happy New Year.

I hope you have Joseph and Caroline's marriage certificate. That will give you Joseph's father. I think it may be a John HANDS in Bridge Street. But you need to confirm this.

If it is then his wife was Priscilla. Use FreeBMD to get the date of the marriage http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ but additionally do track them through each census. Then send for a certificate. (This John married seems to have married at the age of 38 or so. So whilst the children may be his they may not necessarily be Priscilla's.)

From that marriage certificate you will get (?) John's father. You have to do this as Johns and Josephs, in the HANDS lines, were very common. (I think I have over 20 Johns.) Again use the census details to track the family back. The 1841, however, only gave adult ages rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5 (unless the enumerator broke the rules.)

At that point please post your answers back on this list.

Your Joseph may well be at an undisclosed part of someone else's tree. The more points of reference you have the greater the chance of linkage. Most of my contacts are on this list, so you may be lucky.

To progress further you will definitely need to know where your Joseph's grandfather was born. There are lots of very good pre-1837 resources available for most of the counties around Birmingham.

Happy New Year

Mike

New HANDS contact site using the 1851 census

Hi Folks,

Just gone on the Internet is a new website just for HANDS researchers. It's main advantage is that it helps both novice and advanced researchers.

All you need is your Head of Household and the 1851 census to see if someone else is researching your line. Or look at the 1851 residence or parish of birth of your line to see if you can link to someone else's line. Then email them. (Email address are broken up to prevent spam harvesting.

Just send me your HANDS 1851 details as described on the website.

Please take the time to go to http://yourhands.awardspace.com/ Then let me know what you think.

If this works I will add databases for lodgers and grandparents and other who are not Heads of Household. Again, if there is the demand I will do one for the USA using their 1850 census.

Regards

Mike
Hi Folks,

Has anyone got any information on HANDS or HANNES from the village of Knowle, Warwickshire, or parishes around. I'm looking at the possibility of linking two trees. One that's in Tanworth and one that migrates from Hampton-in-Arden to Tardebigge, Worcestershire.

Baptisms, Marriages or Burials between 1700 and 1800, or other information would be most useful.

Thanks

Mike

Hi Folks,

New research looks like my John Henry HANDS (born 1843) of Kings Norton married in 1866 Sarah Ann SOUTHWELL (born 1839), Bridgnorth, Shropshire. (Only FreeBMD, so not confirmed.)

In the 1871 he is a manager in an Iron Foundry, living in Valentine Road, Kings Heath. In 1881 he is a manufacturers manager now living in Frederick Road, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire. Can't seem to find him in the 1891 and I think he dies in 1893.

Has anyone come across him in their own research please?

Regards

Mike

Hi,

Please can you contact me directly. You can either piece together my email address from my last post or, look me up when you're not logged on to this board, then you can see a graphic of my email address.

Still sorting out what needs to be included, so you can join in. You'll need OpenOffice2.

Mike
Re: Harry Hands from Newcastle-on-Tyne, England

Hi David,

It looks like William HANDS married Matilda Warner KIMBER in Portsea, Hampshire in the March Quarter of 1863.

In the 1881 census William is lodging without his family as a Chelsea Pensioner. Matilda and 3 children are down in Landport, Portsea, Hampshire: her home town. Clearly hard up they family are in a lodging house.(Note the single and double back slashes on the census return.)
By 1891 & 1901 the family are back together again.

The 1881 census is important for two reasons. Firstly it helps confirms the place of marriage. Secondly it indicates William was a Chelsea Pensioner.

If you don't know there are likely to be good records for these ex-professional soldiers, who received a pension - therefore records have to be kept. If William joined up straight from home his parents details may be recorded. William's father may even have been in the army himself.

Sorry about the long way round but I thought you should see how I got to the end result. I couldn't see William in the 1861, so he may have been in Ireland or India at the time. The pension records should clear that up.

Mike

Hi Liz,

Happy New Year. Actually I have had no response until yours.

If you have downloaded OpenOffice2 http://www.openoffice.org/ then I can send you my proposed spreadsheet for comments. The proposal is that once you have added your own data, relatives or otherwise, you re-save the document by changing the last 8 characters that make up the file name. Then pass it on to the next person, like pass the parcel. The request to see the file must come via this list so that there is only one up to date copy around.

So the filename looks like "HANDS in 1851 - heads of household_010108.ods" If you think we need more info just let me know.

As, I've just discovered, Ancestry will only attach GEDCOM and graphics files, you can contact me directly by re-building my email by removing the spaces.

mike.yegwart @ btinternet .com

Cheers

Mike

PS For those that don't know there is a version of OpenOffice for Linux, Macs and Windows. You download the version for your operating system. http://www.openoffice.org/ However, the saved file of information can be cross read by any version. Hence no restriction on who gets to use it.
Hi Linda,

Just tis last month I came across info on Hands, Croken and Kelly. I too am researching Roseana Kelly and Patrick Croken. I am Lisa Kelly and I have been trying desperately to see if Roseane Kelly is in fact from MY Kelly lineage. Hands is in my family tree, but again, I don't know if Patrick Kelly coms from my lineage. I have not been able to verify this at this time. I had to write you. Perhaps you know who the parents of Patrick Kelly is. I have a Daniel Mullin as the father to Ellen, Patricks wife. No other info on the mother.
I do not have the names of William Daniel Hands' parents, only his children and spouse.

Am interested in both the Clarke and Hands lines. My g-g grandmother Emma Clarke (b. 1835 in Alcester, Warwickshire) married George Moore (b. abt. 1831 also in Alcester). Their daughter Alice May Moore (b. 1872 in Alcester) married Frederick Charles Hands (b. 1867 in Hunt End, Worcestershire; s/o George Hands and Ann Maria Claymore). Widow Emma and several of her married children including Alice & Frederick emigrated to Montrteal, Canada in the 1890's.
I have much to share re their descendants, but desire information on ancestors.
