Hello Olivia! My aunt who just recently passed was married to a Vernon Claude "Pete" Haney. He was born March 31,1922 and passed away (soo sorry!) March 31,1993. He is buried in Wieland Cemetary in Hunt County Texas. They married and moved to Lakeland Florida until his passing. I know that he was married previous to my aunt and that he did have a son. I found this post trying to locate the cemetary he is buried at b/c my aunt was cremated and her wish is for her ashes to be spread over her husbands grave. However I know next to nothing about his family and only found the cemetary info through searching the internet! I know he also had a sister Helen and his mother's name was Mary. He had a military background as well. I hope this helps you and sorry I have to be the one to inform you. I hope you will find this information and contact me back. My email is suswat@verizon.net. My aunt loved him very much. She married only one time and it was not until later in her life. They had no children together. God bless you!

John Haney on this wife, from a broadside published 1834, Illinois

From a broadside published by John Haney

To My Four Sons,
James, John, William and Thomas

My children having the misfortune to loose their mother, and they being young at the time, if they should live to the years of maturity, their remembrance of her will be considerably obliterated. Expecting that it will be a gratification to them, in that case, to have some knowledge of her whose affections they once enjoyed, I would here related particulars of her life and character. She was the daughter of John Alender, a honest and respectable man, her mother’s name was Jane Poake, a worthy woman, who died, leaving two sons and five daughters. At the time of her mother’s death, the subject of notice was in her thirteenth year. She was born in August, 1796, in Penn’s Valley in the State of Pennsylvania. Her father removed to Jefferson County, Ohio, where her mother died. After her mother’s death she undertook the whole management of the family; which she performed so well, that she was loved and admired by all who knew her. In two or three years after her mother’s death, her father, feeling and judging, as men in circumstances generally do, (the impropriety of which they find out when it is too late to mend it;) thought that his own and his family’s interest would be promoted by a second marriage. He, therefore, courted and married a very respectable woman; named Margaret Miligan, of Washington County, Pennsylvania; by whom he had seven children. It seldom fails but that jealousies arise in the bosoms of step-mothers. Although your Mother never allowed the least difficulty between herself and her step-mother; yet she, in order to avoid such things, thought proper to leave home. There being a very worthy lady in the neighborhood, who had become very much attached to her, she went to live with her where she continued the principal part of the time until we were married. A better place she could not have selected. (Mrs. Gilchrist (the woman’s name) was truly, one amoung a thousand -- mild, amiable, and a pure christian. She has gone to reap her award. Mr. Gilchrist was a highly honorable man). Our union was one of mutual affection; and the happiness we enjoyed during the time we lived together, evidenced that our affections were not misplaced. My departed companion was nearly two years older than I was; she being 2-3, and I 2-1, when we were married. She was of middle stature – pleasant countenance – and considered very handsome. But she possessed qualities of a much higher grade. She was mild, friendly and peaceable. She never had a difficulty with any one; and always lived in peace with her neighbors and friends; -- and she was highly respected by them all, both before and after we were married, and without interruption until her death. I now venture to say, that in proportion to the number of her acquaintance, she had as many friends and well wishers, as perhaps, anyone living. Respecting her domestic relations, there were few to compare to her. Her whole object and aim in it, was to make her family happy; and she was perfectly successful. I am confident that it has been the lot of but few families to enjoy so high a degree of happiness as we did. Her unremitting attention was ever placed upon her family. If any of us were sick, she was always at hand to administer aid, even when her own health was so impaired that she stood in need of help herself. In the management of her home, she was not excelled by any one. She always labored very hard; sat up late, and rose early. She instructed her children in their duty – instructed them how to say their prayers. She is now gone! and I have every reason to hope and believe that her soul is in Paradise. I hope, through the mercy of Heaven, to meet her there.

I want each of my sons, if they are spared, to preserve a copy of the above. It is written by your father; the object of which is, to retain some knowledge of One who has done more for each of you than all the world beside. May God bless you in Time and save you in Eternity.

John Haney
Rushville, Illinois
August 1834
Re: McCulley-Haney

I wish that I had noticed this McCulley-Haney thread years ago. My understanding is that the original poster, Frankie Larsen, passed away in Arizona in 2006.

The Sarah Rebecca Haney mentioned here was the daughter of James Haney Sr. and Sarah ?Elizabeth Simmons. Her father's Civil War Pension records list her first name as both Sarahphina and Saraphina. She went by both "Sarah" and "Rebecca" (her middle name).

Sarah was born August 13, 1850 in Washington Co., TN.
Source #1: Her father's "Minor Child" Civil War Pension: Haney, James; Min C. 234,242; Co. I, 1th KY Cav.
Source #2: Her eldest brother's Civil War Pension:
James Harvey Haney; WC 370,229

At the start of the Civil War, James & Sarah Haney lived in Cocke Co., TN near Parrottsville. James initially entered the Confederate service, possibly via conscription, in Co. F, 64th NC Infantry Regt, CSA. He later enlisted in the Union Army in 1863, serving in Co. I, 11th KY Cavalry USA. James spent much of his service time in the hospital.

While home on medical furlough, James Haney Sr. was murdered by Rebels on Oct. 14, 1864 in the Chuckey Knobs area of Cocke Co., TN. James' wife, two of their sons, and another boy brought James food in the woods. The Rebels followed his family to his hiding place and shot him dead.

The above event is heavily documented in the Civil War pension records of James Haney and his sons.

Following James Haney's murder, three of his sons enlisted in the 3rd NC Infantry USA, the "Kirk's Raiders". Another son served in the Confederacy.

A widow, Sarah (Simmons) Haney and family moved to Roane Co., TN. Sarah died on July 26, 1869 and is buried at the Paint Rock Cemetery in Roane County.

Sarah (Haney) McCulley contributed several affidavits to her father Civil War Pension that provide her residence:

Early 1880s - Lived at Barnardsville, Roane Co., TN.
Sept. 5, 1883 - Relocated to Greene Co., MO.
March 1, 1884 - Relocated to Laclede Co., MO
April 28, 1887 - Living in Sleeper, Laclede Co., MO.

Also, her daughter Mary (McCully) Gage's marriage record shows that she married at her parents' house in Laclede Co., MO in sept. 1888.

If there are any family members of Sarah Rebecca McCulley out there, I would love to learn more about your branch of the family.

I haven't found his parents yet but I am still looking. I descend from Isaac-Ira-David Boyd-William Ernest-William Boyd Sr-William Boyd Jr-me. I have photos of Ira and family on my Ancestry Tree, MS Haneys and LA Thompsons. I have located another descendant and I'm going to call them this week for any leads. I'll keep you posted.
Oh another bit of information I just got today - the Haney family held a family reunion every year at Robbers Cave, OK. My grandma, Verna Mae Shores, said part of our family even had a band that performed at it, but couldn't remember the name. Hopefully she'll remember at some point. She said that these reunions happened when she was growing up - she was born Aug 5, 1930 to John Jasper Steven Shore(s)(b. Dec. 5, 1897) and Nora Viola Wyatt (Feb. 1900). John Jasper's parents were William Albert Shore (b. Nov. 1868) and Martha C. Haney (b. July 8, 1871).

Stephen L. Haney/Martha Catherine (Katheren) Haney Shore(s)

I'm looking for any information regarding this side of my family. My grandmother is Verna Mae Shores, her father was John Jasper Steven Shores, his mother was Martha Catherine (Katheren, Katherin, Katherine) Haney and her father was Stephen L. Haney. I'm trying to find who Stephen's parents were as I can't seem to come up with any more ideas of where to look. As others have stated, I've been told by my grandma that we have Indian in us - Cherokee, Choctaw and Blackfoot. My grandma is very interested to know more about our Indian heritage.
The only information I have regarding Stephen L. Haney is that he was born about 1823, married to Nancy A. Poole and that he's possibly Martha C. Haney's father, as she normally went by Catherine or Kate. In my grandma's records she went by Katheren/Kate, but her death notice states Martha Katherine Haney b. July 8, 1872 Carthage, Miss., d. March 28, 1975 Fort Smith, Ark. My grandma also believes that these dates were incorrect, that Martha was actually 108 when she died, but I'm not certain.
Any information would be very helpful!! Thanks for your time!!

old Haney family reunions at Robbers Cave, OK

My grandma told me that the Haneys from her side of the family used to have annual reunions at Robbers Cave, OK and that the family was pretty large and would have music - some of them had a band apparently. My grandmother is descended from John Jasper Steven Shore (m. Nora Viola Wyatt) whose mother was Martha Katherine Haney Shore (m. William Albert Shore) whose mother and father were Nancy Pool/Pettit and Stephen L. Haney. Kate Haney had full and half siblings: (full) John J., Polly Ann, Jasper and (half) Elsie, Abby and Elmira Pettit. I'm looking for any information regarding this side of the family. I have info on other sides, but my grandma would really like to know more about our Native American side at this time.

Also birthdays for those I know:
My grandma: August 5, 1930
John Jasper Steven Shore: Dec. 5, 1897
Martha Katherine Haney a/k/a Kate: July 8, 1871
Nancy Pool/Pettit: about 1836
Stephen L. Haney: about 1823
I've been reading all the entries on this site regarding John Haney and his marriage to a Foster daughter. Some entries say that John's wife was DAUGHTER to George Foster and Mary Singleton. Others refer to her as daughter to Robert Foster and Charity LNU. In my files, I have that Robert was George's son, which means she was George Foster and Mary Singleton's GRANDDAUGHTER.
Could someone please clarify this for me? Perhaps George had a daughter and granddaughter with the same name, haven't found any info on that.
Thanks for your help

HANEY in Van Buren County, Michigan

I have been scouring Ancestry for any available clues for more Haney's to add to my line, but most of the threads were started nearly 8-10 years ago. And for whatever reason, the owners of those threads are no longer on Ancestry.

I am the granddaughter of Margaret (Haney) Drake... her mother and father were Myrtle "Myrtie" (Challans) and Matthew... Matthew's parents were Matthew and Hannah (Brown). I do have quite a bit of information on my direct line back to Matthew Jr.

I am hoping that there are other Haney-seeker's out there that are willing to share their lines. I know that quite a few of the Haney's had 10+ children and that makes it hard to track everyone down. I do have information that I have gathered for approx. 7 generations back from myself and have tracked them all the way across the ocean to Ireland.

If you have any relationship or are a decendant of John and Sarah (Hulbert) Haney or of Robert and Margaret (McFall) Haney, I would love to fill in your portion on to my chart. I will, in turn, be more than willing to share all of my family's information.

I case there are some that have not ventured very far back in the Haney line, some other names of more immediate family members to me are: Glenn Haney, Vern Haney, Murl Haney, Clark Haney, Martha (Haney) Fry, Margaret (Haney) Drake, Ronald Haney... All of these are from the Hartford, Michigan area (Van Buren County).

Also, I have pictures of Haney grave stones for those that may live far away and would like pictures.
