Dear Dennis,

Can you expand on that?

To all,

Anyone have Sahs/Sass relatives/ancestors who may have lived in Michigan?

My mom remembered recently that my grandfather before he died (1973) talked about taking a trip to Michigan to visit (I think) relatives.

I'm fairly certain that his mother was named Henriette Potrafke. I'm pretty sure Henriette had a sister named Anna m. H.F. Pieper. I found a news article from the Edwardsville Intelligencer saying that Henry Pieper and his wife Anna Potrafke-Pieper and daughter Ruth visited Walter Pieper of Detroit, MIchigan..circa up to 1950's..but perhaps there were Sahs in Detriot or nearby also.

Dear Tracey,

You mentioned that your ancestors last name was spelled Sahs....upon arriving in the states, New York Immigration changed the spelling to Sass...****to look more American.

Actually there is symbol ß "the esset" used in german. The symbol signifies the "ss" sound.

Anyhow...my grandfather spelled our surname Sahs.

His brother spelled the name Sass.

My grandfathers Ellis Island record records spelling Sass.

My grandfathers baptismal record in Germany reads Sahs.

Is my opinion that the American English cursive 'h' resembles the ß (esset) .. and American English pronouciation of Sahs [Saas] is as German Saß. .
HANK family

I have recently found that the surname of my great-great grandmother, Mary Ann, was Hank. I have very little to go on at this point but I do know she had a brother Jacob, who lived in Nebraska in 1903. Mary Ann lived in Northampton county, PA at the time of her death in 1903.
She was born Dec. 31, 1840 and it is unproven that she arrived here in 1851. I have not been able to find a ship listing yet to confirm this.
She married twice, the first time to Hiram Hawk and the second to Leonard Schill. She was Catholic at the time of her death but I do not know if her family was Catholic while in Germany.
Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi! I'm not sure if your Herman is connected to my Hank side. I don't go back very far on that side. However, I do know that my Herman Hank was not the first one, so maybe your Herman was a brother (or cousin) to my Herman's dad, Carl. I don't know if they came directly to Wisconsin after leaving Germany, but that's where they ended up (Milwaukee), and that's where we still are! Please feel free to message back or e-mail me anytime: butterflyzz@hotmail.com. Thanks!

Hello; I have recently obtained a diary written by Leonidas Rosser Hank from 1934 to 1938. I am interested in corresponding with any descendents of this family, which goes back to Jehu Hank in West Virginia, whose son was Leonidas Hamlin Hank, father of Leonidas Rosser Hank. Rosser married Minnie Johnson and they had a daughter named Irene who was born about 1903 and who died in 1938. If you have any information on this family, please contact me directly at gensearchers@shaw.ca

Best wishes

Norm Dawson
Calgary AB
Canada

Dear Tracey,

I think its possible Sahs might have also been jewish name.

However, I am fairly certain my circa 1920's Sahs/Sass family were Lutheran.

Though interestingly, in my grandmothers jewelery box there were couple small star of david pendents... I don't know if they were really hers from Germany or when in Germany or if ever worn...or possibly if myself or my sisters might have lost necklace pendent at grandfathers house and he found and put away.

I remember during the early seventies lots of people, (not just jewish) at school wearing star of david pendents in support of Israeli students around the time of the 1967-1973 wars.

What are the first names of some of your ancestors? I think often in older records sometimes, (not always) you can assertain a jewish backround by the given name, or sometimes the spelling of the given name.

By the name Edmund Carl Heinrich Sahs, or Carl Paul Heinrich Sahs, doesn't seem jewsish to me. The name Johan doesn't seem particularly jewish either as is in my experience (no expert) the Latin rendition of John.

Barbie

Also, do you know where is Poman, Germany is located?

My Great grandfather's name was Johann Wilhelm Sahs. He had two brothers (my great uncles) who married two sisters whose surname was SASS.
A gentlemen on the internet send out this information in the surname. "I guess in modern German language the spelling of the SAHS surname could be be SASS, because normally the "hs" in the old German script represented the double "ss". My German speaking ancestors taught me to pronounce the SAHS name as SAAS, similar to the German pronunciation fo the surname "HAAS" 'I hope this clarfies this up a bit for you. I know for sure that my great grandfathers last name is SAHS as we have a copy of his birth certificate. You may need to check church records in Germany (but they may have been destroyed during WW2) and records here in North America.
I hope this helps you out.

Wow! You know so much about your family. I don't know much at all....all I know is in Poman, Germany, where my father was born, his last name was spelled Sahs....upon arriving in the states, New York Immigration changed the spelling to Sass...to look more American.

I am trying to find out if I have any German Jew in me. Frankly, my family doesn't look German at all as they claim, rather they look Jewish. I am of the belief because of the time (WW2) that they did not wish for anyone to learn of their Jewery. I am only guessing though.

I do not know where to start to find this information. Family members in the states do not know, and if they did, they certainly wouldn't tell....please help point me in the right direction for the answers I seek.

Thanking you in advance,
Tracey

Dear Dennis,

My grandfathers name was Edmund Carl Heinrich Sahs. He was baptised at St. Petri unde Pauli Kirche in Bergedorf, Germany. (Near Hamburg)

Interesting is that witness' to his baptism were:

1. St. Petri unde Pauli Kirche, Baptismal Register, 25 Dec 1901. "Edmund Carl Heinrich, born 25 November 1901, baptism 25 December 1901, witnesses to baptism:

1) Karl Wilhelm Heinrich Harders
2) Johann Heinrich Wilhelm [Rump?]
3) Johann Heinrich [Jurgen?] Sahs *******

Parents of the born child are:

Carl Paul Freidrich Sahs, from Bergedorf, lutheran, employed as a carpenter.

Henriette Potrafke, from Posen, catholic.

I know he had a brother named Richard.

I have a photo from the 1920's-1930's of my grandfather and friend and or/relative...reads..

"Hanging with Albert in Chicago."

My grandfathers wife was named Dora Schmidt. I believe she had sisters, Martha and also an Anna Steffens? I know she had a brother Karl Schmidt, and another brother (name unknown) who supposedly died in Germany chopping his hand off while beheading a chicken.

My mom remembered that my grandfather had cousins in Illinois. I wonder if the Sahs family of Woodstock, Illinois could possibly cousins? Though I think she mentioned Monroe County Illinois.

An Uncle H.F. Pieper was listed as the person who paid his passage to the U.S. on his passenger list in 1924. Mr. Pieper lived in Edwardsville, Illinois.

He was from Steuben Co., NY, but moved to Rockford, IL about 1860.
I'm looking for more details as well. I have quite a bit on the Lander family, but only the name Emma Hank with a few sketchy details of the marriage. If anyone can fill in the blanks, I'd love to hear from you.

Carolyn

Would seem we are dealing with the same individual. If I have my relationship correct Anna M.(daughter) is my second cousin 4 times removed (or something close to it). Anna's grandfather William Hank was a sibling to my ggggf Jehu Hank of Monroe Co. VA/WV. I have a fair amount of Hank information, both ancestors and descendants of J.W.F. Hank, including a copy of a letter written by Mrs. Anna Maria (Keener) Hank, widow of J.W.F Hank, on 1/23/1883, to a Mr A.E. Ewing where she's responding to his request for family information.

If you want to send me a note at wmhank@hotmail.com we can take this offline while we sort out how to best share info.
