Hello
My name is James Hardy Hankins. I can only trace my family name back to my grandfather James Earl Hankins from Springfield Ill. Family lore has it that Grandpa was abandonned as a infant and was raised by a black in texas. He apparently took their name, he never recieved or sent any letters. So little is known of his early life. I would hope that such a story would be in another families lore.
thanks for any help I can recieve.

Mose *D* Hankins

Trying to find info regarding the middle name of Moses D. Hankins, son of Moses Pigman Hankins and Sara Ann Buker. He was born abt 1863 in Newton County Missouri. The Hankins were originally from Ohio, moved to Indiana and then Missouri, and finally to Kansas.

Most family trees state that the "D" was for David, but list no sources as proof. I have a Moses Decatur Hankins in my family line, with information that matches this Moses "D" and wondered if "David" was an assumption that has been passed down. Or perhaps the "Decatur" stated in my family line is erroneous and he is really a "David". The person who provided this information (it's on my g-grandmother's funeral record) was not known to be all that lucid as it is :-(

Terri

Hi Zach - where in Texas and Louisiana were your dad and grandfather from? My Hankins were all in Alabama, but I know there are quite a few Hankins in TX - not sure about Louisiana.

If you would list the cities or areas of the states that they were from, and also the dates of their births or deaths or anything like to narrow it down, you might get some specific responses for your request. It's cool you are doing this - I started around age 11 bugging everyone as I always found this fun. My siblings and other family members think I'm nuts ;-)

Good luck in your search! I hope you find some people who knew them!

Re: Dr. Samuel Frances Hankins

My GG Grandfather was Samuel Masters Hankins, an attorney born 1812 in Wilmington NC. He had either a brother or uncle named Samuel William Hankins, who may have been a minister, who married into the Howe family. He was an associate of Major General Howe's son Robert Jr. It appears that Sam W.'s mother-in-law was a Howe. Robert Jr died without heirs, leaving to Samuel William Hankins acreage in the Henry/Benton County area of Tennessee, he inherited from the Major General's war service.

My Samuel Masters Hankins apparently conducting legal work (perhaps on behalf of his brother or uncle) found himself in Paris Tennessee where he met and married Hadassah Chambers Brown (of the Chambersburg PA Chambers family).

I haven't traced Samuel Williams Hankins, but have my Samuel Masters Hankins. He and Hadassah (Hetty) and family found their way to the Yalobusha/Panola Counties area of Mississippi where resided my Moore family. One of their daughters Frances Evelyn Hankins married my great grandfather John Thomas Moore.

Between the 1870 and 1880 censuses Samuel Masters and Hetty settled for the last time in Forrest City Arkansas.

Hope all this might fill in some of your blanks. You might want to check the Hankins family in Wilmington NC for Samuel Frances Hankins, I am not familiar with the name. You might also go to Ancestry.com and search the family of Dennis Hankins (both in NC and SC).

Sorry it took so long. I'm not perfect at how this message board works but I'm learning.
This is what I have on Laura E. Applegate. Born 8 Jun 1837 d.4 Apr 1861.
1850 census Dover Twp., New Jersey Laura is 13 y.o. and living with another family. Next on census entry is another Applegate family poss. brother age 26 w/wife and child. No other Applegate family who could have been their parents listed. Poss. died prior to 1850 and she had to become a servant?
Laura m. William R. Hankins and had two boys before my g-grandfather Gilbert was born.
Wm. Jr. who died after 12 y.o. and Eugene Marquis d.28 Aug 1858 at the age of two.
My g-grandfather was born in 1860 and Laura died in 1861 after a lamp fell on her and she died of burns.
I can't find any name in the Hankins line that would support the name Eugene or Marquis which makes me think that it might be a name(s) on the Applegate side. There are Gilberts and Williams in the Hankins line.
Thanks,
Ruth

HELP! Looking for any info regarding Mose Hankins. I found a Mose in 2 different census, one said he lived with brother-in-law Jeff Presley, 1 said he lived with Charlie Taylor as a step son. Mose married Beulah Bell Jinks and Mose was quite a bit older than her. 1 census names a son Wilburn Hankins but Beulah was only a couple of years older than him. Mose could have been the dad but who wsa the mom? they are from Tennessee. Knoxville and Greene County. Please try to help. Thanks

This Hankins family is perplexing. My William and Gilbert and their brother Francis were born in Virginia, moved to Kentucky and later moved again to Indiana. There is a William and a Gilbert in 3 consecutive generations. With these names popping up in seemingly unrelated lines, there SHOULD be a common ancestor somewhere!
Sharon

Re: Hankins' in NJ

Christos,
From the info in your note, you already have the necessary material for substantial research on your own that will almost certainly bear fruit. It would be nice if everything we wanted could be plucked from others when we want it, but that simply isn't how things work. Just from available U.S. Census data, you should almost certainly find your ancestors back to at least to about 1780-1800 (if your immediate lines were in America at that time). However, you will not be able to make any headway until you commit yourself first to the task. Sign up for an introductory membership with Ancestry.com that includes unlimited access to U.S. Census data. Find your known ancestors in the 1930 census first. If they are the head of their own household at that time, then evaluate the given data to determine when they married so that you can pinpoint a census whereby they were single and living with their parents. From the 1930 census, step back each decade for two reasons: 1) reconfirm info already gleaned and 2) you may find their elderly or widowed parents living in their household. This is pretty easy to do, but it does take commitment, and perseverence. Perseverence because sometimes it seems that people just disappear. That's when you go to the last county or town they lived, and then you read each line of every family in the entire census to ferret them out. Often, you cannot depend on search engines, or the eyes and intuition of those who, with the best intentions, spell or interpret names that they see as correct, but simply aren't. I think that you'll be pleased with what you can dig up with what you already know. Then, along the way, you'll certainly identify cousins/aunts/uncles that dovetail into other families that you've already perused but went away empty-handed because your own research had not yet contributed the detail necessary to establish the links you seek. Good hunting!

Are we related? Another new Jersey Hankins.

Hi. My name is Christos John Hankins. My mother is Marietta hankins. My uncle is Andrew Hankins. My grandparents are janet and fred hankins. Both died in New jersey(monmouth county). Other than my mother, uncle, brother, and myself everyone else is deceased. I have no other knowledge to my family other than this info. If it helps, it helps. If not thank you for at least acknowledging there is another branch of the hankins. I don't think anyone knows about us. I have searched online and no one at this point knows who we are or even asks about us. maybe we're the "unspoken of" family members. I don't know.
Hi Linda,

I am working on the complete Hankins tree and at this time have the largest Hankins tree around 20,000 descendants. I just live north of Greene Co. I need dates and more information on your Moses as at this time I have 18 Moses's.
Also we are working on a DNA Hankins project which shows Greene and Grainger Co., Tennessee matches in the line.
hkjca@bellsouth.net I need dates. Look forward in hearing from you. Jeff
