I would love any information you have on this Minnie. I have researched some of this family, and the lack of info on her led me to think that this could be my gg-grandma, however I'm not sure. The ancestor in question first appears in 1910 in White County, TN. Her name appears as Minnie Scott b. abt 1872 who states she is divorced with 2 children, Cora Elizabeth Scott and Floyd Scott. She married a man named Lee Barks in 1913, and in 1920 I find her widowed with her son, her age is also off. I have never found a marriage record, divorce record that clearly states it is hers, and the birth record of Cora's doen't give a father. There are too many Minnie's born in the 1870's to narrow it down, except that I never saw any info for Minnie d/o Sarah and Albert even though everyone else in the family was well documented. Any info to prove/disprove this connection would be greatly appreciated!
aphroditeindior@verizon.net

Re: John L. Hanks

Hello Susan,
I don't know who his parents were for sure. I'm guessing it was Cyrus R. Hanks. He was married to a Sarah in the 1880 US Census and to an Eliza in the 1870 US Census This is what the US Census is showing as a possibility. It seems to match up with the census information on my grandparents in the US Cesus of 1910, 1920, and 1930. But I haven't been able to research anything as yet about anything futher. The story is that
my grandfather had run away with Grace E. Maupin back around 1900, leaving his wife Nannie Pemberton and two children. Why he did this we don't know. When they ran away together they moved to Maryland and went on to have 5 children, of which one was my father. My father nor any of his siblings knew any of this information. (My grandparents died before I was born.) The thing of it is is that they also changed their names to John Henry Lewis and Kate E. Lewis when they moved to Maryland. We only knew just a few things about my grandparents. Most of which was about my grandmother Grace. That was how my sister and I were able to get a copy of her death certificate at the Vital Statistics in Annapolis, MD. This is where we were able to connect her to the Maupin name. Horace Albert Maupin and Minnie Pemperton.
Minnie Pemberton was the sister of my grandfather John's 1st wife, Nannie Pemberton. So you can see why they ran away together and changed their names. They lost all contact with their families. We have contacted a cousin who is 84 years old but we haven't been able to get together as yet. Maybe I can find some information from him. He never knew what had happened to Grace. They thought she had ran away with a Union soldier. We were able to connect to someone who is an historian of the Maupin name who also helped us put two and two together.
If you would like to contact me please do so at my e-mail address. jeannettecollins6@hotmail.com

I know my grandfather was born in Ohio and his birthdate-about 1871, that he worked for the B&O railroad, but there is no paper trail from my grandparents. I have no pictures of either one of them. My grandmother died in 1920 with Tuberculosis. My grandfather died in 1950. He lived with one of his son's, William, but I haven't been able to contact his family as yet to see if they have anything. I haven't been able to trace where my Uncle Will's wife moved after my Uncle William died. I think it's in North Carolina. We lost contact with my father's family, we were only close with one of my father's sister's. I'm still learning how to research things with Ancestry, and I still have to go back down to Vital Statistics in Annapolis to see what else I can find out. I work a full time job and I work on genealogy information when I can.
Please e-mail me and I'll see if I can exchange any information with each other to further our research. Are we related?
Sincerely,
Jeannette

Here is some information on Romulus Hanks. He married Francis Brown 6Oct1847 in Putnam Co, IN. They had 5 children

Arminta b.1848 d.???? m. Charles Stanley
Carrie/Castra b.1851 d.1931 m. William Loomis
Charles Annibal b.1852 d. aft.1910 Never married
Laura b. 1856 d. 1947 m. J B Watkins
Luella b. 1858 d. ???? m. Edward Jaquins

I dont see any connection to the names you mentioned, but I suspect it is somehow thru the daughter Luella. Census records show Luella and Edward had at least 11 children, births ranging from 1877 to 1896. The 2 youngest and the 3 oldest were born in Kansas. The 6 other children in the middle were born in New York, dates ranging from 1881 to 1888. The next child born in Kansas was in 1894 so there is a 6 year gap during which they returned to Kansas. There is an 1890 New York City directory listing an Edward Jaquins as a cigar maker, but I can't verify it is the same person.

No other family member appears to have any connection to NY. Romulus had no connections with NY (born KY, then to IN, Iowa and Kansas). Arminta & Carrie stayed in the Kansas and Iowa area. Charles and Laura moved to CA, along with their mother Francis. Charles & Francis both disappear after the 1910 census.

Hope this helps you out.

Would it be possible for you to scan and e-mail the photos to me?

Thanks
Ron Hanks

Romulus Hanks

I have read the boards with interest about Romulus Hanks. Our family oral history states that we have a connection with this family, but those who know the full story have passed on. The connection is through our g-grandmother Anna Erdman(n) b. abt 1867 who from an early age lived with her aunt in NYC. The aunt's first name was Heccuba and she was born in KY, married to a painter/artist Mr. Angerstein.
I do have two photographs - one of a civil war soldier. On his hat is a bugle and the number 15. Written under the photo is R.L.Hanks. The second photo is of a woman with three children (2 girls, 1 boy) and handwritten under the photo is: F. Hanks & children.
The oldest living member of our family states that her parents went to a Hanks reunion sometime in the 1920's - she thinks in the midwest, near Chicago.
sound familiar to anyone? Thanks. Sandy
Naomi ( often called Omi)Caroline or Carolyn (I've seen it both ways in family papers) Hanks is my grandmother. She married James (Jim) Franklin Parks. They came from Kentucy to Tennessee to Illinois to Missouri. They had several children. I don't have all the dates in front of me at the moment. Sons: Harry, Cecil, Fred, and my father, Elza whom they called Elzie (sounds like LZ)
daughters: Agnes, Maggie

Evidently, your gfather was Daddy's uncle Bob Hanks. We lived in Qulin, MO but Daddy had Hanks family members in Poplar Bluff, MO. Daddy and all of his siblings have now passed away.
Romeo P. Hanks, b. 11 Aug. 1800, Pawlet, VT
Marcia Hanks, b. 11 Jan. 1803 Pawlet, VT
William Hanks, b. 17 Oct 1806 Pawlet
Camillus Hanks, b. 15 Aug 1808, in Pawlet d. aft 1870 Twinsburg, OH
Jonathan Safford Hanks, mentioned previously, b.17 Aug 1810 in Pawlet, d. 12 Dec 1880 in Napa, CA
Ermina Hanks, b. 24 Sep 1812, Pawlet, d. 24 Sep 1891 Meigs Co., OHio
Galusha Hanks, b. 16 Jan 1816, Pawlet, d. 28 Nov. 1901
Isaac Hanks b. 15 Feb 1818, Pawlet, d. 20 Nov 1895 South Haven, Michigan
Amanda Hanks, died in infancy

Romeo married and settled on the west shore of Lake Champlain. He had two sons, George and Deane. His wife died when the boys were quite young and soon afterwards Romeo was drowned, George being adopted by a friend of his father, a Mr. Frisbie, and Deane going to live with his grandfather Oliver.

Marcia married Sylvanus Buckland Lathe, they had two children that I know of, Marcia and Henry. Nothing more is known of this family.

William left home when a young man to follow the sea and was seldom heard from.

Camillus as a young man worked on the farm summers and taught school winters, being often spoken of as a remarkably good teacher. He married Fanny M. Nelson, daughter of Moses Nelson and Cloe Carver. They reportedly had no children, however, there is a 10 year old child named Adaline H. Hanks living in their household in Twinsburg, Ohio in the 1860 census.

Jonathan Safford Hanks, subject of previous posts. He and his wife Sarah had 7 children. There was a successful and popular doctor named Jonathan Safford in Pawlet, Vermont. He came from Bennington, Vermont in 1793 and died in 1821 at the age of 56. It is assumed that Jonathan Hanks was named for this gentleman, but it's unknown whether there is any family relationship.

Ermina married William Hoover Packard on 05 April 1832 and moved to Ohio. They had one son that I know of named Oliver Hanks Packard.

Galusha Hanks married Lovina Pepper on 29 June 1835 in Pawlet, Vermont. He was a shoe maker in Pawlet and they had 15 children. I won't name them all here, but will provide the names to anyone who is interested in this line.

Isaac married Lucinda Wheden on 11 April 1841. They had 4 children that I know of, Milton Henry, Alta Jane, STella Ardelle and Helen Frances. He moved to Twinsburg, Ohio near his brother Camillus. In 1860 he moved to Bellville, Wisconsin, where he lived until 1874. He then moved to South Haven, Michigan where he purchased a fruit farm.

If anyone finds any inaccurate information in the above or can provide additional information I would appreciate hearing from you.

Barbara Shannon

Emma Amanda Hanks' parents were Jonathan Safford Hanks b. 17 August 1810 in Pawlet, Vermont and Sarah Atkins. Jonathan's parents were Oliver Hanks, b.07 Dec. 1778 in Pawlet, Vermont and Diadema Porter, b. 1777. I can take your line back to Benjamin Hanks who immigrated to Plymouth Colony in 1699 from Malmesbury, England. Contact me directly for more information, but I'm afraid you will not find a direct connection to Abraham Lincoln.

The John L. Hanks you are looking for was my grandfather. He ran away with his wife's niece, Grace E. Maupin, back around 1900. Why he did this, leaving his wife and his two children, I don't know. They moved to Maryland and changed their names and went on to have 5 children, one of which was my father.
Please contact me for the rest of the story.
My grandmother was also a Hanks- born Florence Elizabeth Hanks in 1917. She had 2 sister: Margaret (Peggy) and Marjorie as well as several half-brothers. Her father's name was Sam(uel) Hanks and her mother's name was Jennie Tetrault. It was rumored that Sam was related to Nancy Hanks, but I am at a dead end. Have you come across and information on a Sam Hanks? (Sam was also first married to Jennie's sister who died, but I am unsure of her first name-so the half-brothers were quite a bit older).

Regarding the John C. Calhoun and Nancy Hanks argument, I have personally seen this document at the Abbeville County, SC Courthouse:

"This agreement made and entered into on the 19th day of February 1809. I John C. Calhoun of the said state and district, of the first part and Nancy Hanks of the second part, for and in the consideration of the sum of $100.00 per year, to be paid to Nancy Hanks, for the support of an illegitimate son born February 12, 1809. The said sum of money to be paid to Christopher Orr, who shall act as guardian for said child.

John C. Calhoun Signed in the presence of, and on the above mentioned date. Witness Christopher Orr, Robert Brown Norris, Thomas Lincoln."

Half of my family is from the Ebenezer area of Anderson County, SC and the "legend" of Abe's paternity is not a story, not a rumor, not a joke. To us, its nothing but the truth. There is an amazing article online here: http://www.greenvillesouth.com/abe.html
(the text of the document I quoted earlier is copied from this internet article for accuracy)

Take from it what you will, but for doubters there is substantial evidence to the contrary of what has always been said about Lincoln.

I am so hopeful that this is him and we can make some contact. To clarify...we are looking for Willis Raymond Hanks, son of Charles Franklin Hanks and Della Gertrude Thomas. His oldest brother was my grandfather Arthur. Willis Raymond also has a brother, Charles, who is still alive and quite aged. I know that Willis Raymond had a second wife named Laura and a son named Willis Raymond...believe he went by Bill Ray. The info I had placed Willis Raymond's last contact in the Phoenix, AZ, area. Oh please, if this is this Willis Raymond Hanks...please please please contact me!!!! Please email me at weshallprepare@hotmail.com You just don't know how long we have been looking and hoping for contact!!!!

Lester R. Hanks

I was just wondering if anyone had any information on Lester R. Hanks. He was born in 1934, and my father thinks the family was originally from Illinois. His parents may have been named Mary and Joe. He died in 2004 in West Virginia.

He came to Kansas prior to 1960 and married Marian Lang, but other than that, I have no information on his early life before Kansas. I did not get the chance to know him, and he did not talk about his parents or siblings with any of his children. I do have some information from a family bible, but it doesn't divulge anything about his parents, or which of the names listed would be his grandparents.

Any information found would be greatly appreciated, and I would be more than happy to share the names and dates listed in the family bible.

Thank you!

Hannah Hanks (3 Jun 1767-1820)is not the second wife of William Hanks Vincent (b. 1802): she is his mother. She is the second wife of William H. Vincent (1755-1816), but nobody knows what the H stands for there. William H's first wife was Lucy Luzadder (Luzader) (about 1760-1784).
