I just noticed your message of June, 2008. I rarely check the Hannay site, concentrating on Hanna and Hannah names. If you have not already located it the site http:www.clanhannay.org or http:www.clanhannay.us illustate the Hanna/Hannay Coat of Arms, the Family Crest, the family motto, and the clan tartan. They also have a map that shows the location of the clan in southwest Scotland. In addition to what is shown on line they have commercial items for sale at reasonable prices.

Hi,
It is not quite clear what information you require.
The Robert Hannay you refer to was born 1845/6 in Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. He appears age 4 on the 1850 US census at Lower St Clair in that county with father William Hannah age 46 b Scotland and mother Elizabeth age 36 b England.
In 1860 the family was in Salem, Columbiana Co., Ohio where father William Hanna was a farmer.
Robert married Lydia A Patterson 17 Feb 1868 Columbiana Co.
In 1860 Lydia age 11 was also living in Salem with father Robert Patterson age 60 b Ireland and mother Lydia T age 45 b Pennsylvania.
I don't know if this helps and whether you have information on the families after 1860?

Robert Hannay (1819/05/22-1864/03/07) in Kent county, New Brunswick, Canada

Hello. I'm looking for information on a Robert Hannay, originally of Scotland, I believe, who married a Sarah Agnes Hudson (1822-?) in Canada. After Agnes died, Robert married her younger sister, Mary (1833/09/09-?). Does anyone have any information on their offspring? I suspect one daughter of one of the pairings was an Emma (or Edith?) who married a TJ Bourque, a doctor.

A coat of arms is not transferable down the generations - If your grandfather had one and you have one - they would not be the same.
As you do not state where your families come from. It would cost you about £900 to register your own shield and over £1000 more for the addition of a crest in Scotland.

This may have been a 'postal address' or he may have been a sub-postmaster.

Can anyone tell me anything about this family? I cannot trace them after 1901 census, other than the odd bits already mentioned. Did they emigrate? Can't see them on any lists. Help please. Thank you

hi Wayne,
I am currently researching (very slowly) the Hannay's of Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire and in particular a Andrew Hannay b 10.1796 - d 07.1882? who married a Hannay McClive b 06.05.1798 - d 1861? and married 12.12.1830. They had three children - John, Mary and Alexander. I have Andrew Hannay's mother as being a Mary Forsyth b-1772 - d 27.03.1858. Not sure if she had Andrew out of wedlock and that he took on his fathers name that being a John Hannay. I also have John Hannay as married to a Isabell McWhinnie - who had four children being Agnes b 01.1795, James b 11.1798, Jane b01.1801 and also Andrew b 10.1796. I also have a copy of a tombstone erected in Memory of a William Forsyth and his family. He was the father of Mary Forsyth. Have you ever come across these people in your research at all. The Forsyth's were from Waterside - farmers I believe. I am also in the Genesreunited but my time researching is very limited. I think I have sent you emails before and have looked at your website which is very rewarding. I have found a couple of contacts - many thanks for that. I look forward in hearing from you soon. If you could direct me to who I need to speak to or look through i would be grateful. My email address is agrp@bigpond.com
Regards Patricia Sheargold (nee Hannay)

Hi,
I'm also looking for photos of the Hannay family. I'll let you know if I succeed. I only have later photos (of great grandchildren of Henry Ter,or grandchildren of his son George Byron,or children of both his daughters Louisa & Arvilla, esp. Eva Hannay (born 1890 Oneida, Ny) . I'm looking for more of these and earlier ones. Are you related to the Stanfords of Oneida NY? Eva was raised by Cyrus Mason Stanford (also George or Tip) after 1894 (after the family moved to IL & MO.), so Stanfords also have photos. Is there any way you could send me the image of David Hannay?
Thanks.

Harriet Hannay of Princetown, N.Y.

I am trying to track down information about my grandmother, Harriet Luisa Hill Hannay, who was born in 1975 and died 7/17/45. She was born and raised in Princetown, N.Y., and moved to Schnectady. She married John Gurry.
I have a sketchy family tree that show her father's parents were William C. Hannay and Catherine C. Flansburg (or Flansburgh), apparently both from New York. William C. Hannay was one of four children of Peter Hannay and Elizabeth Neilson. Catherine Flansburg was one of 11 children of John C. Flanburg and Almire Martin (or Hopkins?). I would love to hear any details you may have about this branch of Gurrys.
Many thanks!

One of my grandfathers, Alexander Donnan, married Helen Hannay and was a Presbyterian minister in Ireland at Gilnakirk until he came to America in 1818. Helen Hannay was born in 1780 at Sorbie, Wigtonshire, Scotland, daughter of John Hannay, who died in 1833. She had two brothers Alexander and Peter and perhaps a third, Andrew; plus one sister, Elizabeth and perhaps another, Margaret. There's more, if this sounds like your line of Hannays.

William Hannay & Esther Jones = Harry George Hannay

At last - I seem to be making some progress!
Can anyone help with the following;

Harry George Hannay(a baker) was born 9th July 1890. He married Fanny Georgina Blackman (a nurse), but he called himself Henry George Hannay on the marriage certificate!
They had 5 children, Henry George, Evelyn, Helen, Phyllis & Frederick (details in previous posting)

Henry George was the son of William Hannay (butcher) and Esther Jones. They lived in Enkel St, Highbury, London.

I have been unable to locate any birth records for William Hannay. Old family mumblings suggest he may have been born in Glasgow. This would have been somewhere between 1855 & 1874 (assuming that he was aged 16 - 35 when Henry George was born)

Any info on William Hannay would be gratefully received

Kind regards

Alison Hannay

My great grandfather was Henry George Hannay and he married a Miss Blackman in 1913. His son Henry George Hannay was born 29/05/1914 in Islington London, and married Katherine Francis Atkinson (b1912 St Pancreas) in 1939 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. My father is also a Henry George.
Traditionally all eldest sons were named Henry George, and I am currently trying to trace the family back to SW Scotland. Please let me know if you have discovered any Henry George Hannays, and I will keep you posted if and when I manage to get further back along the line.
