I am trying to trace a Martin Hanrahan who was living in Cobden Victoria in about 1906. Martin was born in about 1870 in probably Limerick. He arrived in Melbourne on the SS Thermopylae in 1896 and married Bridget Quaine who arrived on the same ship. They do not appear to have had any children. I have traced Bridget to Sydney NSW where she died in 1927. I have however been unable to trace Martin after 1906. Any information would be appreciated.

The only "David Hanrahan" occurring in Griffith's Primary Valuation of Tenements (c. 1849) for county Kilkenny occupied land in Kilmurry, Thomastown. A memorial in Columbkille Cemetery bears the following inscription
"Of your charity pray for the soul of DAVID HANRAHAN of Blessington, who departed this life on 8th November, 1875 aged 54 yars. Also his mother HONORA HANRAHAN who died April 23rd., 1870 aged 70 years. Also his loving wife ANASTATIA M. HANRAHAN who died 22nd April, 1894 aged 58 years and PERER JOSEPH HANRAHAN, Blessington."

The occurrence of the christian/first names NORA and ANASTATIA in your family suggests, but is not conclusive evidence, that this is your family.

While not then related, the family is well known to me and the then residence in Blessington is occupied by a cousin through a later marriage. The late Peter Hanrahan was, for a number of years a member of the local authority, Kilkenny County Council and was an unsuccessful candidate for the national parliament, Dail Eireann. His son Joe was an unsuccessful candidate in the June, 2009 local elections.

If you can provide any additional information, which may be obtainable through public or church records, it may be possible to verify that this is your family.

I am looking for any information regarding the family of David and Mary(nee Sullivan)Hanrahan. I have her year of birth as 1837. Their children with birth dates were: Nora (1864), Anna (1868), John (6/24/1869), Anastacia (1870), Mary Elizabeth (9/25/1872), and Annie M. (3/25/1873). Mary Elizabeth's death certificate shows her place of birth as Kilkenny. This is the only info I have on location.

Hi Stacey,

I have just been researching my husbands family tree and have come across a connection with your Alston Claude. My husband Kim, was adopted by Thelma Dorothy Lakeman (nee Hanrahan)with Wiluna connections. Thelma is deceased but I know of a sister Olive still living. We have been wondering what the Hanrahans connection to Wiluna is. I found Ola Hanrahan's headstone in the Wiluna Cemetry site and it lists the names of her children.

Regards

Kylie

Hi Stacey,

My husband and I were in Perth on the weekend and visited Aunty Olive Towl (nee Hanrahan)she is Alston Hanrahan's sister and the last remaining member of that generation. I think I have worked out that Grant and Mark Hanrahan are my husbands 1st cousins. Kim's family refer to Alston as Uncle Bull (a nickname from what I gather). Thelma Lakeman (nee Hanrahan) died on 13 January 1971. There was also a sister called Barbara. Barbara moved to Perenjori/Caron and Thelma also came to this area meeting and marrying Harold (Hal Lakeman) Not sure when Barbara died. I told Olive that we had come across your messages on the net and she was very curious as to how you were related.

If you come across any more info that you think might help our family tree please let me know. I am curious as to what the Hanrahan's did at Wiluna.

Best wishes

Kylie

Robert- Thanks for the information, I know I will use it, I've run into so many brick walls with my Hanrahan relatives, I don't know where to turn. I know they existed, but I'm finding so little proof. Every time I find a name, it's like gold. I will be in touch, thanks for the offer.
Linda

This is an update to a posting I made last year regarding PATRICK HANRAHAN from Waterford City, Waterford

Very recently obtained the following information:

PATRICK HANRAHAN born c. 1870 and MARY DOOLEY b.1875 married?
Children born in WATERFORD CITY to the couple
PATRICK HANRAHAN born 1903 in Robinson's Lane, Ballybricken
LAURENCE HANRAHAN born 1901 in Shortcourse, Ballybricken

It is possible that PATRICK senior died around 1908 in Waterford and Mary Dooley remarried at some point after his death.

I would be interested to hear from anyone with information about these HANRAHANS.

Regards

Catherine

Lyndy

I came across an old posting from you and wondered if you had moved any further with your Hanrahan research? My g-grandmother was Johanna Hanrahan, father James, born around 1860 and married to Maurice Cagney in 1879 in the parish of Ballylooby. Her place of residence at that time was Scart. Only other info I have on her is that she had a sister, Alice.

Any connection?

Regards
Sheila Flynn

HANRAHAN - London, Cork, and Nevada

Looking for any connection to EDWARD WILLIAM HANRAHAN, my paternal grandfather, known as NED. No idea when he was born, could have been in London or Cork. He was one of fourteen siblings. One of Ned's sisters is supposed to have emigrated to Nevada, to found a convent.

Ned himself was a draughtsman at London County Council but also claims to have been comedian Sir George Robey's manager, at one point.

He claimed also, that his father(sorry don't have a name) was one of the original founders of Pearl Assurance and that they worked there together for awhile.

Ned told my father, that his father had a big house in Cork and that his parents had been wealthy, often entertaing politicians.

Ned fought in WW1 and was gassed during the Battle of the Somme.

He was the second husband of LILIAN RUBY NEWBOLD of Dulwich, London and upon his death in 1962, he was discovered to have been a bigamist with a surviving Irish wife and daughter. He was interred in an unmarked grave in Nunhead Cemetery.

Ned was the family black sheep and I'm curious about him. Any suggestions on how I go about proving/disproving his claims would be welcome. Thank you for your time.

I have a HANRAHAN, Mary married James Ryan in Castlegrace/Ballylooby circa 1818. Their son RYAN, James b. 1827 Castlegrace came to Philadelphia, PA and married Maguire, Ellen The church records are in very poor shape. The priest allowed us to look at them a few years ago and the pages were brittle and stuck together, obviously heavily water damaged. I was afraid to handle them, so just went with the information from the Family History Center. Only have a name and date, but there are still many Hnarahans in the area.

Sheila, I have not gotten any further with my HANRAHAN research. I also have not had as much time this past year to spend on my research so that could be part of the problem. Seems like I can't get anyplace on this line. I only know James HANRAHAN married Alice (Ally) DOOLEY and had at least 4 children but I can find birth/baptism records for only two of them. One of them married an O'Brien and I have a small lead to that but have not been able to follow up on it yet. There has to be some connections with all the HANRAHANS in Ireland but it is a hard connect the dots trail. How close is Ballylooby to Ballydruid I wonder? Is it in Tipperary? That's the only place I know of mine were but that could be because I don't have more info to connect them YET!!! :-) Let's stay in touch. Lyndyc@suddenlink.net. in California/USA

Cork, and was born around 1888. I don't know the name of her father, but I know that her mother was named Kate Lonergan. I would think we descend from the same Hanrahans. I live in Dublin and plan to do some research into this branch soon.

Iowa.

I am taking my 86yo 'Hanrahan' grandfather to Ireland this spring, his first trip to the homeland and would love to go to the town his gg grandfather and grandmother emigrated from. Some of the latter family members have visited me in Kilkenny in recent years!

Michael.

Hello: You bought that photo from me. I'm Edward Joseph Hanrahan. I also have an account on Ancestra.ca. My father Gerald, was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. My Grandfather, John lived in Brigus, Newfoundland. He died in 1898. His wife Mary Anne also there. I'm not sure if they were born there, but definately of Irish dessent. As I understand my ansestors are from Ireland. I only have info back to my Great Grandfather, John and Mary Ann. I'm not sure how many children they had, but do know they had my grandfather William, his brother John and Edward. My grandfather William left Newfoundland around 1905 with wife Margaret Brophy, William worked in the mines in Glace Bay all his life. His brother John later came to live with them. If you have any additional information, I'd appreaciate to hear from you. Also, I am the 3rd Edward Joseph from my side.

Thanks,
Ed Hanrahan
Halifax, Nova Scotia
