Hi Brent

Would you believe I JUST NOW ran across your 1999 post asking for information about William Henry Hanshaw? William Henry was my husband's great-grandfather. He was born February 21, 1848, in Darke Co., OH, to Hezekiah Hanshaw (March 14, 1817 Botetourt Co., VA) and Jane Kern (abt. 1829 OH?). He married Juliet Sargent (March 27, 1853 Franklin, IL - September 1, 1920 MO or OR) on December 29, 1875 in Franklin, Morgan, IL. After his death on April 25, 1936 in MO, both William Henry and Juliet are buried in the Iantha Cemetery in Barton County, MO.

I'm sure we have information we could share with each other about our family members. I'll be anxious to hear from you.

Carol Hanshaw
Liberal, MO

POW/MIA Korean War, HANSHAW

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Greenbrier County, West Virginia as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: HAROLD CARMEL HANSHAW
Born: August 18, 1930, Caucasian
Date of loss: November 30, 1950, POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Hanshaw family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Robert Hanshaw

My grandfather was Robert Ellsworth Hanshaw born 10-21-1929 to Everette L and Hellen M Hanshaw. He had 4 brothers I believe. I am aware of Ken, James, Paul, and Frank. He had a 1/2 brother John Coleman. He died 9-7-1992. He was marred to Marjorie Elizabeth Doyal. I'm not sure of the spelling of the last name, or her exact birthdate. I talked to a lady some time ago...I mean year ago...about a class project we were doing. She had us related to Jesse James and the Hatfield and McCoy families. I think she said Jesse James's mother married a Hanshaw after he was born. I can't remember the person I talked to or even where she was from. If anyone has any idea as to branching this tree, please contact me at marjsmith03@yahoo.com

My mom was born a Hanshaw. Her father was Robert Ellsworth Hanshaw. He was born in PA in 1929. He has a few brothers. He was married to Marjorie Elizabeth Doyal. His parents were Everette Hanshaw and Hellen...I'm not sure of her maiden name. She was married to a Coleman at one point in time I think. They had a son Jon before she married Everette. That is about the farthest back I can go. I have spoke with someone in the past about it and she had the tree back to Jesse James and the Hatfields and McCoys. That was many years ago, and I can't even remember what her name was or where she lived. If we may be related, any info would be appreciated.
Hanshaw/Tapp Connection

I'm looking for a concrete connection between a Martha J. Hanshaw married to Martin Dennis Tapp and a Martha J. Hanshaw daughter of William Henshaw/Hanshaw and Marilla Sweet. I want to find out if these are the same Marthas.

Martin Dennis Tapp with his brother James W. Tapp ran and owned a store on Main St. in Wichita, KS in the 1890's to the 1920's. Along with them also an owner was Oliver Hanshaw. The name of the store was Tapp Brothers & Hanshaw Red Front Racket. Since Martin's wife's maiden name was Hanshaw I assumed that Oliver might have been Martha's brother. I looked in the 1910 census records for Sedgwick county, Wichita, KS and found an Oliver Hanshaw. It showed his occupation to be merchant general store.

It lists his wife and children to be:

Wife: Nora D
Daughter: Estella M
Son: Earl L
Daughter: Evangeline C
Daughter: Cecil

When I was searching I came across The Hinshaw Family Association Website.

http://www.rawbw.com/~hinshaw/index.htm

I found an Oliver Leman Hanshaw on there matching the one in the 1910 Kansas census. Also it showed that Oliver Leman had a sister named Martha J. I found that to be a possible connection. I'm just trying to find something more exact.

In the Nicholas County Marriage records, there is a James Jeffers who marries Catherine Ann Peatt on June 2, 1845. The bond was signed by James (x) Jeffers and John Sopher.

Another Jeffers listing is George W. Jeffers, age 21, born in Nicholas, who marries Rachel Dorsey, age 30 on March 20, 1856. His parents are John and Catherine and her parents are not stated. Minister is Thomas J. Reynolds.

Jenalda Jeffers married Harrison Dotson on Nov. 12, 1850 in Nicholas County, VA also.

I'm descended from Minerva's brother John Jackson Hanshaw.
Hope this helps!
Neva

I meant to change the title to catch people's eye. I can also add for all who read this that Francis says in 1850 Nicholas Co, VA census that he was born in Norfolk. In the 1860 and 1870 Clay County, (W) VA census records he says that he was born in VA. In the 1870 census he also says that his mother and father were born in England. France as a birthplace should have come from the Clay County Free Press article on John Jackson Hanshaw, mislabeled as Andrew Jackson Hanshaw. So far in the census records of Francis Hanshaw's children I have found VA, blank or unknown as what his children listed for his place of birth.
Here's hoping we solve this one day. :)

Re: Andrew Jackson Hanshaw and wife Mary Ann Obrion Simmons

Hi, I don't claim to know everything about this family, and have lots of questions on them, but I have done enough research to know that you won't find him as Andrew Jackson Hanshaw anywhere except on the Henshaw Assoc. list. He is Francis Hanshaw on census records, tax records, and birth records. He did have a grandson named Andrew Jackson who never married. I think the confusion comes because the Clay Free Press printed a picture of a man, with JOHN JACKSON Hanshaw's info of his 2 wives and children. John Jackson was not born in France, but prob. bet. OH and VA. J. J. was the son of Francis Hanshaw. I am willing to share what I have on him, notewise to any relative. Write me and I'll send my notes.

I am researching a man named William Everett Hanshaw who died in West Virginia 20 June 1967. His obit named children Ernest, Fred, Roger and Clifford Hanshaw. A review of census records suggests that William was the son of Harvey C. Hanshaw and his wife Virgie. Clifford was living with his grandparents in Kanawha County, West Virginia in the 1930 census. He was about 5 years old at that time. I have some information about William's second wife, but know nothing about his first wife.

If you think this is the family that you are looking for, please contact me.

Looking for information on John Hanshaw (1834-1910?) who lived in Bulloch County (Stilson), GA. He married Nellie Groover and had 13-14 children, namely Hudson, John, Isabelle, William, Laura, Alice, Eva, Benjamin, Josephine, Nellie, Bossie, and Martha. Nothing is known about his siblings or if he originally came from GA. He owned and operated a Grist and Turpentine Mill, created the Hanshaw school for his children and neighbors. All of his children were college educated and between 1910-1920 most relocated to Savannah, Philadelphia, New York and Cleveland.

this is a wild reply but my William Hanshaw was born in 1851 Kensal Green, and he had an older sister Eliza, and he named his daughter Eliza. This seems to be a pattern that they keep naming their children the same names generation after generation. any conection

Brent,
I am a great-nephew of Ora Hanshaw. He was one of my grand dad's brothers.
I have most of the family information from Ora...relatives, etc.
I have this on video in fact.
I would love to share this info with you. I knew Ora very well.
His mom's name was Winnie Lawson Hanshaw. His father was John Hanshaw. His grandfather was a civilwar veteran, Andrew Hanshaw from Bull Gap Virginia.
I have a lot more info, but it's at another place. I will get it and share it all with you later. Marion was one of his uncles. He had about 7 uncles and several aunts.
Keep in touch,
Von Hanshaw
