I would like to clarify and expand upon my Query re James A. Haptonstall posted 23 Aug 2002.
I should have said ---“Might he NOT be the son of Samuel b 1797?”
I believe that James, the son of Samuel b 1797, was living with his sister Malinda in TX at the time of the 1880 Census, and he was single at that time. Please see the data for Malinda below:

[Notice that Malinda was married in Dekalb Co., MO, and that is where her father, Samuel b 1797 was living in 1850]

In the above 1880 census listing, both Malinda and James Haptonstall have a father born in NC and mother born in PA, which does not agree with the birthplace of VA for both Samuel b 1797 and his wife Eleanor. This error could be the result of an error on the part of whoever supplied the information to the census enumerator.

The above data is what makes me believe that the James A. Haptonstall who was in Tazewell Co. IL in 1860 and in Gallia Co., OH in 1880 was not the son of Samuel b 1797.
Then, who were the parents of James A. Haptonstall?

There is also a record of a James H. Haptenstall serving in the Texas Cavalry during the Civil War:
Texans in the Civil War; Texas 16th Calvary, Company F (Confederate): Haptenstall, James H.

Does anyone know if this James H. is the son of Samuel b 1787, or who his parents were?
