Cindy Dihrkop,

If your folks are from OH & PA and are from Germany, your name was originally not Harbin, but was Harbein or Harbine. Some spelled it Herbein or Herbine. In a few cases the "e" was dropped & it became Harbin. They settled in Berks County, PA, mainly in Exeter & Oley townships. The early censuses are full of them & they pretty much stayed in PA but a few did go elsewhere A Daniel b 1780 went over to Washington Co. MD 1810-1840 & his descendents went to Green CO. OH. Samuel b 1789 was in Butler Co. OH by 1830. There are two little books about them: "Annals of the Oley Valley in Berks County PA" by Rev. P.C. Croll & "A Letter" by J.T. Harbine. There is also a huge book on the history of Berks Co. that has several wills etc. of the family.

Joan Marie

I am a descendant of Watson Franks b. Nov. 1869 Alabama who married Diaffie A. Shug Harbin b. 24th April, 1877 Alabama. I believe that Watson is Andrew Watson Franks and Diaffie is Diaffie Adeline Shug Harbin. Birth dates match and I found in Family Search a marriage that matches them in the 1900 Spruce Pine, Franklin, Alabama Census. It states D.A. Harbin (female)
married A.W. Franks 24th Nov. 1895 Lawrence, Alabama and on the marriage certificate it has Diaffie's birth as 24th April 1877. In the 1900 census it states they were married 4 years est. 1896. In the 1900 Spruce Pine, Franklin, Alabama Census lists family # 57 Elisha E. Franks b. Feb. 1879, 21, AL. and Allice V. Franks b. Mar.1883, 17, Alabama. It states they were married 0 yrs. est. 1900.

1 Watson Franks b. Nov. 18, 1869 AL.
+ Diaffie A. Harbin b. April 24, 1877 AL.
2 Trixie Maetta Franks b.
At least we are making progress. I only found Philip by accident. I haven't searched on the name "Mattie Harbin" yet. As my grandmother Lizzie died before I was born Mom didn't talk about the Harbin side much. After my Mom died last September I found my grandmother's bible and started searching. I vaguely remember Mom talking about an Aunt Mary and Uncle Charles. I am also going to research the Inabitt name. Are you related on the Harbin side? I have a picture of Philip and Martha's headstones.

OK, that takes care of that idea! Philip might be on the Montgomery City census as a 23 yr old in 1880. His father Dominic died there in Feb 1880 & is buried in Oakwood Cemetery (Sq 3, Scots Free Ground). I don't know where the two boys were after that. The wife had died in 1872. He was a lawyer in Lowndes Co in 50-60-70. Interestingly Dominic's birth records were as Harvin too! I would still like to know who those other 2 kids were that Mattie had & were still living in 1910 but were not at home in 1900. Any ideas? If they had had a son, he might have been named Philip G. or even Dominic S. after his grandfather.
Joan Marie,

I think we may be on to something. The Ruddick's I can explain. Anna Elizabeth Harbin was my grandmother and she married James Stanton Ruddick. He is the only one of my grandparents that I knew. Their daughter, Eunice Virginia Ruddick, was my Mom. The Ruddick child on the 1910 Census was her older brother Durward Givhan Ruddick. Growing up I remember my Mom talking about the name Inabinett. And I know that she knew several of her cousins on the Inabinett side. I was never sure were they came in. I knew that my grandfather, J S Ruddick, worked in logging camps all over Mississippi and some in Louisiana, but until recently, I didn't know that my grandmother's parents were probably there first. I always assumed that Lizzie and J S met and married in Alabama but could never find a record. I actually found the Braxton MS Cemetery and have pictures of their headstones. Philip Harbin's was put there by my parents when I was a small child.

Thank,

Virginia

Virginia,

OK, here is some more for you then. I believe this was her 2nd marriage & the Ruddicks were hers from the first one - no proof though but on both the 1900 & 1910 she said she had had 5 kids. The other 2 could have been adults & out of the home already by then. In 1900 they both said they had been m 18 yrs (1882) & it was their 1st, but I have no other explanation. They were m 3/17/1882 in Chilton Co. AL -her name was Mattie Inabinett. Actually if you can find that marriage record it might say whether it was her 2nd. According to the 1900 the 3rd child was a Mary E. b 2/1885. Yes, Charles R. (or P.) was a brother of his & was on the 1870 census w/the parents.

Joan Marie

Joan Marie,

Thanks so much for your information. In 1910 he lived in Ellisville, ward 2, Jones County, Mississippi. However, on the 1910 Census the name "Harbin" is misspelled as "Harvin". His occupation listed is that of a laborer in a lumber mill. His wife's name was Martha Alevia. I have been unable to trace her further as I can't find out her maiden name. I know there where 3 children. My Grandmother (Anna Elizabeth Harbin Ruddick) and 2 sisters. One of her sister's never married (Caroline Virginia Harbin). The other sister I have very limited information on. I think her name was also Martha. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Virginia

Virginia,

Thanks for the middle name - all I knew was G. Yes, he was the son of Dominic & Dominic was born in Charles County, MD on 26 Nov 1820. I do not have anything associating P.G. w/Lowndes Co but the family was from there. Do you have P.G.'s wife's name? Or his whereabouts in 1910? Any idea of his occupation? He was in the 1878 city directory in Montgomery City & I have him as a wood chopper in Bibb Co. in 1900.

Joan Marie

Becky,Papa-j & others:

Harbin China has nothing to do with the HARBIN surname in the U.S. According to a book called "The Making of a Chinese City: History & Historiography in Harbin" its original name is something I wouldn't want to try to pronounce.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Sorry, I had forgotten about this message board & had not checked it in years. I was just scanning the many threads and have a few comments.

1) re: Adonijah - This person is not a HARBIN. Despite the fact that it is indexed as HARBIN on one census, if you check the other censuses, it is HARBER on others and deeds in NC are all HARBOUR/HARBOR. His parents were Tom & Sarah Witt of Wales. The lesson here is that just because a person (Edward Villers HARBIN) has children of the age group for him to fit in, does not mean he does belong to that person.

2) re some Ohio Harbins being German - they may very well not really be HARBIN. Some of them go back to a German family who settled in Berks County, PA in the 1700's. The name was spelled variously as HARBEIN or HERBEIN or HARBINE or HERBINE. In some cases the final "e" got dropped and it became HARBIN.

3) re most of the HARBINS going back to the family in Yeovil, England. Yes, MOST of them probably do, but do not discount the fact that there were at least 5 different lines in the U.S., 3 of which preceded the William in MD who is thought to be the first one. There were a Nathaniel and a George in VA pre 1700 (whose descendents we don't know) and several others in the Charleston, SC area pre 1700. Now another author is claiming that William in MD was the son of a ship owner and not connected to the Yeovil family. Don't believe everything you read!

Joan Marie

Hello: I am seeking the parents of Jemima Smith. I have gotten information from other researchers that Jemima's parents were Isham Smith, Jr, b. abt 1760 in Cumberland Co, NC. Sarah was born in the same location, abt 1770, d. abt 1803. The children were: Jemima, John, Stephen, Elizabeth, and Isham Anderson Smith. Can anyone confirm this, and connect Sarah to a Native American tribe? By DNA testing, the female line in my family tests positive for a type that indicates Native American heritage. Later female line names are: Maxwell, Russell, Ivy, and Lee, out of Lincoln, Lawrence, and Copiah counties, MS.

Thank you,
MaryAllen

I have been following the posts on this book, hoping for a response that allows me to find a copy of the book somewhere. I have "heard" through the gene-grapevine that perhaps my Maxwell line has a Sarah Harbin in it who married an Isham or Isaiah Smith. This Sarah would have been born c. 1770, with her daughter, Jemima Smith born c. 1798. Does anyone have any information about this *possible* family tree?

MaryAllenM
comamur@sbcglobal.net

Joan is correct, not all the Harbins are related. Not all descend from Robert Harbin I of England. Don't take the word from someone who says they are, without researching the records yourself. Prove what they say is correct or disprove it. In ancestry.com, the famous relative site is full of incorrect information. Half the people I am suppose to be related too, are wrong. For instance they have Robert Harbin's mother as Bridget Drewry, and her mother as Margaret Wentworth, which takes her line back to Geoffrey Chaucer. Actually, the mother of Bridget Drury was Margaret Mervin and she wasn't the mother of Robert Harbin I, but the wife of his son John Harbin. So before one takes the word or genealogical records of others, you should research the records to prove it or disprove it. REMEMBER There's no truth without the proof! Don't give up on your research, its an enjoyable hobby so keep up the good work you are doing. Another thing you want to keep in mind when you do your research, document every thing you find. Take a lot of dimes with you and copy the actual document, and if it comes from a book, don't forget to copy the copyright page with its title. And finally, don't keep your material a secret, once you have enough material, publish your findings. It's one thing to have your material online, but it is best to have it in book form and donate it too all your favorite genealogical libraries. Uncle Sam will even allow you to deduct the donation (your actual out of pocket costs) from your income tax. So keep records of your expenses, including travel expenses. I descend from the Harbin family living in Lincoln County, Tennessee and Madison County, Alabama. They migrated first to Lincoln County, Tennessee from South Carolina. Go have fun and gather up your ancestors, they're waiting to meet you.

Do you have a Laura Harbin married to John Luten in your line? I do not have any information on her parents. I believe she was born in Alabama and was in Texas by 1899. They had the following children: Mae Elizabeth born 1899 in Texas, Elmer, Leoia and Johnnie. Mae married Clarence William Holden about 1915. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

William T.(Thomas) Harbin was my grandmother's (Minnie Leona Harbin Brooks)father. He was married to Eliza Ann Mckinyen and that is where I am stumped, I cannot find any information on her. My grandmother told me that her grandfather was an indian and that might be why I can't find any information because I don't know what Eliza's indian name was and there is no record in the family bible of it. There is a Harbin family book and they are mentioned in it but the book is really about another line of the family. I am still working on my tree but you could check out the Vaughn family tree where they are listed.

I also became stumped from Duke to William Harbin. Thank you for the added information. I am also at a loss as my line comes forward from Louisa Scott Harbin (b. 1849) to Zeddie Lee Harbin (b.1880). Zeddie Lee's father is unknown.

Can you tell me if this William Harbin was from North Carolina?

Thank you so much. I have nothing on Eliza Ann Mckinyen. If she is of native American ancestry, you'll not likely to find any government records. At some point early on, the powers that be in Virginia declared that there were no Indians in the state. They were censused as freed blacks. If I do find anything, I'll post it.

Re: Edward Villers Harbin JR

I finally dropped this line due to inability to prove that Tabitha Harbin was in fact a child of Rezin Harbin and Mary Macnea. I have ruled out all other possibilities, however. Just have nothing further to help. For records involving Mary:

Maryland Records Colonial, Revolutionary, County and Church from Original Sources
Marriage Licenses Issued at Upper Marlborough, Prince George's County, Maryland--1777 to 1801.*
Name: Rezin Harbin
Spouse: Mary Macnea
Marriage Date: 14 Nov 1778
This is the Reason/Rezin born in 1757. There are several more who remained in MD and were Catholic. This one would be an adult male to marry in 1778 and the son of Edward V. Harbin, SR and Lydia, with whom he rolocated to NC. Rezin is in his father's will of 1803 in Rowan County. Also listed in Edward SR's will as reference owner of adj. land.

Rezin and Mary were in Rowan County, NC by 1790. Spelled REASON in 1790-1800 and 1820.
Have a couple of NC records of Rezin or Reason for land taken for debt and several census records in Salisbury area that match his age and age of Mary. They were alive in NC in 1820.

Loose papers collection at Salisbury Library: book 21, page 654: May 4 1809
Edward Chambers as high sheriff of Rowan (on an execution against the lands of Rezin Harbin for 123 pounds recovered by Calwin? Sharp & Osborn of Iredell
Co. with orders to sell & did sell on 1st Monday of May 1809) to Andrew Hunt of Rowan 125 acres next -----Shepherd on west, Widow Stonestreet on north,
Col. Jo Williams on east, Martin Bridgefarmer, Wm. Griffin & on south by Edward Silvers, on east side Lick Run & down said creek to its mouth where it
empties into North Yadkin River, for $40.00 witnessed by B. Locke & acknowledged.

In Abstracts of Deed Books 20-24, Rowan County, NC 18067-1818 by James W. Kluttz it is worded thus:
1171 p. 654.4(?) May 1809. Edward Chambers, Sheriff to Andrew Hunt, by virtue of an execution of Iredell Ct. against Rezin Harbin in the amount of
#123 which sum was recovered by Catw___(?) Sharp and Osborn; Chambers seized 125 A on Yadkin R adj Stephens, widow Stonestreet, P. Williams, Martin Bridgefarmer, William Griffin, Edward Silvey, and Ward. At a public sale held on the first Monday of May 1809 (May1), Hunt was highest bidder at $40. Wit: ___Locke, ack by Chambers
