My great grandmother claimed that her maiden name was Harcourt, and that she was born in Sheffield, England. This claim is dubious. The attached photo is of a portrait, currently in my mother's possession, that was passed down from the ostensible Ms. Harcourt. The subject of the portrait is supposed to be a Harcourt, either my great grandmother's father or her grandfather.

I would be grateful for any insight into the possible identity of this fellow, or information about the regalia. The surnname Tootle or Tootles from Chorley may also play a role here.

Huguenot deHarcourts from France

Greetings --

I am trying to connect my ancestors (names below) to the deHarcourts originally in Picardy who left because they were Huguenots.

The main person I am trying to connect back is Jean deHarcourt, b. about 1661 in Mühlhofen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, married to Judith ?. His daughter, Anna Maria deHarcourt, was b. 1672 also in Mühlhofen. The family is said to have descended from deHarcourts in Saint Pol, Picardy.

Anna Maria was the widow of Peter von Weimar, their child was Catherine, b. 1705/6. She emigrated with Joshua Kocherthal's group to New York in 1709. She next married Isaac DeTurk, b. 1685 in Frankenthal, who also emigrated with the Kocherthal group.

They moved to Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, where both died.

Anyone with an interest in this line, please contact me. Also appreciate any suggestions, leads, sources to check.

Thanks!

Harcourt's - Ireland -Ontario -Seney, Michigan

I have managed to find quite a bit of information on the descendants of Luke Harcourt and Mary McCaffrey of Fermanaugh County, Ireland. This family immigrated to Ontario, Canada around 1832, settling primarily in Wellington, Ontario. Later generations immigrated to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, settling in Roscommon and Seney. All the info I currently have can be found at my family tree website:

www.kdvkfamilytree.50megs.com

Find the Harcourts using the Name Index. All documentation and source info will be found on each individual's page.

I would greatly appreciate any additions/corrections. Please feel free to sign the website guestbook, or drop me an email.

Karyn

Harcourt - Ireland - 1850s

Looking for information on any members of the Harcourt family in Ireland in the 1850s. William John Harcourt was born in Myross, Union Hall (near Skibbereen), Cork in 1868 to Ellen Elizabeth Bourne and Charles Harcourt.

Another Harcourt, also named Charles, was born in Ireland approximately between 1870 and 1884. He immigrated to San Francisco in 1890 and lived with his aunt, Henrietta Bourne Kennedy. Charles Harcourt was a boilermaker by trade. He stated in the 1910 California census that his father was born in England and his mother was born in Ireland. The names of his parents are unknown but may be the Ellen Elizabeth Bourne and Charles Harcourt mentioned earlier as the parents of William John Harcourt.

I would appreciate any information you may have on this branch of the Harcourt surname. Thank you. Patti giftpantry@aol.com

Harcourt reunion in Saskatchewan and James Photo

I recently returned from a reunion of James Harcourt's descendents in Saskatchewan Canada. All are from Sid and Fred who left ontario in the late 1800's. It was a wonderful time with Tom playing the fiddle while generations danced. I also met other grandchildren of James namely Jim, Wilfred, Jack and many cousins. Jack's wife Bea who is coordinating the Harcourt research asked me if I could find a picture of James Harcourt at any age to put with their other info. If anyone has one could you please email a copy to pwh@harcourt.ca and I will have it printed and maiul it to them. Thanks

richard and jane harcourt

More on the Harcourts in my family: Richard married Jane Gorse in 1856 in Birmingham, or possibly Manchester--I don't have the details with me at present. He was 18 and she was 16. Rose was born in 1860, and there was a Frank in this family too. They show up in Toronto, Ont. as early as 1881, and Richard apparently ran a coal company from 1881-2, but he then seems to have gone into the furniture/cabinet-making business. Frank worked with him for at least three years, and then went out on his own. My mother, who has done the research on this, has not looked for Frank after 1896 or so, and said that she found 2 Franks in Toronto, after about 1888, when Virginia was married, and she was not sure which of these might be of her family.

There is a Harcourt Township in Ontario, in the south east corner of Haliburton County, some distance north of Toronto--no apparent relation to my family, at least.

There was a typo in my last message: should have written "local" not "loca".
