HARCOURT, Francis Milo "Frank"; Ontario, Canada,1833

Seeking parents or siblings of Francis Milo "Frank" HARCOURT said to have been born 9 April 1833 near Brantford, Ontario, Canada. One source suggested a father named Cyril and a mother named Kate, unconfirmed. I located "a" Frank HARCOURT in the 1860 Federal census in Akron Township, Peoria County, Illinois. The Frank I am interested in was recorded within Mount Pleasant Township, Bates County, Missouri, in the 1870 Federal Census with wife, Lovina SHIVLER, and three sons, Willard 7, Eddie 5 and John 3. Supposedly, Frank and Lovina married in Illinois and likely before 1863, calculated from the birth of the first son circa 1863 in Illinois. From his death certificate from Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, Frank died 15 March 1913, age 79, and was born 19 April 1833, his father was recorded as "John HAIRCOURT" from Canada, and mother's surname was "CUMMINGS". Frank is buried in an unmarked grave in Mound Grove Cemetery South Block 1, Lot 118-1-6, in Indpendence, MO.

Hi Adrienne,

I read your posting regarding your first foray into your family history dated 24Apr2000. We are related as I have the same relations and my maternal grandmother was a daughter of Alfred and Margaret - whose middle name is Graham, by the way.
I was wondering whether you found any more details and see you have a posting regarding an Earl - are these related?

Cheers.

Sheryl.

Hi Barb,

I would be really interested in the Harcourt information that you have. I am a relative of Catherine Rolston who married Richard Harcourt. I know that they had 10 children. From that I know next to nothing except the John Alvin married a woman named Matilda although I do not have her maiden name. Some of my family members actually remember some of the Harcourts.. they were cousins of my grandfather. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Melissa

Thanks for getting in touch. As you have obviously noted I have a Sarah Watson who married a Henry Butler and that the Harcourt connection comes from their son Edwin Watson Butler marrying into a Butler family from Hampshire.
Joseph Potto Harcourt and his father James certainly had connections with Leicestershire and Birmingham as I have some letters which were sent from those places as well as the fact that there was some property from them in Joseph Potto's will. I have traced her brother James into Kent, but do not know if any of the other siblings went to the Midlands from Frome - do you have any insights?

Re: Early-Medieval HARCOURT Family

I have the whole Harcourt family. It comes from a book that I have called "Harcouria" The history of the Family Harcourt.

This is way to much info to put here, E-mail me at mjrose@uneedspeed.net

As you call it Jean D'Harcourt, who is JeanII de Harcourt.
His parents where JeanI De Harcourt and Alix de Beaumont, with some info.

Seigneur de Harcourt, St.Sauveur le Vicomte and Chevalier

HARCOURT, a village in Normandy, now a commune in the department of Eure, arrondissement of Bernay and canton of Brionne, which gives its name to a noble family distinguished in French history, a branch of which was early established in ‘England. Of the lords of Harcourt, whose genealogy can be traced back to the 11th century, the first to distinguish himself was Jean II. (d. 1302) who was marshal and admiral of France. Godefroi d’Harcourt, seigneur of Saint Sauveur Ic Vicomte, surnamed” Le boiteux “(the lame), was a marshal in the English army and was killed near Coutances in 1356. The fief of Harcourt was raised to the rank of a countship by Philip of Valois, in favour of Jean IV., who was killed at the battle of Crecy (1346). His son, Jean V. (d. 1355) married Blanche, heiress of Jean II., count of Aumale, and the countship of Harcourt passed with that of Aumale until, in 1424, Jean VIII., count of Aumale and Mortain and lieutenant-general of Normandy, was killed at the battle of Verneuil, and with him the elder branch became extinct in the male line. The heiress, Marie, by her marriage with Anthony of Lorraine, count of Vaudémont, brought the countship of Harcourt into the house of Lorraine. The title of count of Harcourt was borne by several princes of this house. The most famous instance was Henry of Lorraine, count of Harcourt, Brionne, and Armagnac, and nicknamed” Cadet la perle “(1601— 1666). He distinguished himself in several campaigns against Spain, and later played an active part in the civil wars of the Fronde. He tuok the side of the princes, and fought against the government in Alsace; but was defeated by Marshal de la Ferté, and made his submission in 1654.

The most distinguished among the younger branches of the family are those of Montgomery and of Beuvron. To the former belonged Jean d’Harcourt, bishop of Amiens and Tournai, archbishop of Narbonne and patriarch of Antioch, who died in 1452; and Guillaume d’Harcourt, count of Tancarville, and viscount of Melun, who was head of the administration of the woods and forests in the royal domain (souverain maitre €1 réformateur des eaux etforlis de France) and died in 1487.

From the branch of the marquises of Beuvron sprang Henri d’Harcourt, marshal of France, and ambassador at the Spanish court, who was made duke of Harcourt (1700) and a peer of France (1709); also Francois Eugene Gabriel, count, and afterwards duke, of Harcourt, who was ambassador first in Spain, and later at Rome, and died in 1865. This branch of the family is still in existence.

Hello charcourt1,
Thank you so very much for your reply to my message. I have been working on this almost everyday for the last year.
What is your name, which Harcourt family are you from? Where do you live. If you dont want to post that information on this message board, please e-mail me at home
drjrs@umich.edu.
We must be related some way probably 3rd. cousins, 1st removed!!!!
I have so much I could tell you now, but will wait to get an e-mail from you, then I will give you my phone number also.
Thank you for the book list, but I also now own them, but I have news paper articles from here in Prudenville about Jim Harcourt and Dan Dunn. I also have a copy of the marriage license of Jim Harcourt and Nellie Gardiner from 1890 here in Roscommon county, where I live., plus several other articles. There is a woman from Manistee, Mi. who has the Harcourt family history back to the 1780s in Ireland.
Last Sept. I went to Seney and Trout Lake to start my research, I didnt get a lot of info at the time, but met the director of the Seney Historical Museum, he is also the Seney Twp. Supervisor. I told him what I was doing family research, and gave him a copy of Jim and Nellies marriage license, he said they have lots of inquires about the feud, but said he never met anyone who said they were related to the Harcourts, let alone prove it like I did. Just last week I sent him a package of info that I have found this past year, a 1945 news article about the feud and a copy of the Houghton Lake Resorter newspaper-published March 8, 2007 about me doing genealogy and family history about the Sullivan and Harcourts and Dunn here in Prudenville.
So I hope this gives you a little background of me and my research about our families. I hope to hear from you soon. I found Ancestry.com message posting from 7 yrs ago
about the Harcourts, but nothing since, so Its nice to meet a real Harcout now. Write-email soon. Thank you, Dr. Jim Sullivan, Prudenville, Mi.

I have managed to find quite a bit of information on the descendants of Luke Harcourt and Mary McCaffrey of Fermanaugh County, Ireland. This family immigrated to Ontario, Canada around 1832, settling primarily in Wellington, Ontario. Later generations immigrated to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, settling in Roscommon and Seney. All the info I currently have can be found at my family tree website:

www.kdvkfamilytree.50megs.com

Find the Harcourts using the Name Index. All documentation and source info will be found on each individual's page.

I would greatly appreciate any additions/corrections. Please feel free to sign the website guestbook, or drop me an email.

Karyn

Following on to your message, William Maidment did indeed marry Mary Jukes in June 1766 and they had 7 children to my reckoning, James, Martin, Sarah, Henry, Christopher, Elizabeth and Martha. Henry was the father of Israel Maidment who comes down the line of my "indirect" family. Annie Bella Maidment married into the Price family in Brecon and her son, Aubrey is 91 years of age - cousin to my late father. If I can offer any further information, please contact me.

My great grandmother claimed that her maiden name was Harcourt, and that she was born in Sheffield, England. This claim is dubious. The attached photo is of a portrait, currently in my mother's possession, that was passed down from the ostensible Ms. Harcourt. The subject of the portrait is supposed to be a Harcourt, either my great grandmother's father or her grandfather.

I would be grateful for any insight into the possible identity of this fellow, or information about the regalia. The surnname Tootle or Tootles from Chorley may also play a role here.

Hello. I just found this site and was shocked to see your message from so long ago. Bill Harcourt is my brother. I don't know who would have owned the photo album, except.....in Port Hope a harcourt relative had many Harcourt photo albums. When she died I asked for the albums and was told I could have them. However, I never did receive them. They all went to the auction. It would be a miracle if the album was hers. I'm anxious to hear from you.

Have four books so far on the Dunn/Harcourt incident in Seney. "Incredible Seney" by Lewis C. Reimann; "Ticket to Hell" by Roy L. Dodge; "Voyages into Michigan's Past" by Larry B. Massie; and "Michigan Rogues Desperadoes Cut-Throats" by Tom Powers. Just beginning my exploration, too. We visited Seney in 1993. Word spread quickly that "some Harcourts" were in town.

Huguenot deHarcourts from France

Greetings --

I am trying to connect my ancestors (names below) to the deHarcourts originally in Picardy who left because they were Huguenots.

The main person I am trying to connect back is Jean deHarcourt, b. about 1661 in Mühlhofen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, married to Judith ?. His daughter, Anna Maria deHarcourt, was b. 1672 also in Mühlhofen. The family is said to have descended from deHarcourts in Saint Pol, Picardy.

Anna Maria was the widow of Peter von Weimar, their child was Catherine, b. 1705/6. She emigrated with Joshua Kocherthal's group to New York in 1709. She next married Isaac DeTurk, b. 1685 in Frankenthal, who also emigrated with the Kocherthal group.

They moved to Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, where both died.

Anyone with an interest in this line, please contact me. Also appreciate any suggestions, leads, sources to check.

Thanks!
