Hello,
I am the son of the same name of Walter Seay Harder, born in Trenton, Ontario and son of Peter Harder. I go by the name Seay, although it is my middle name. My father used the name Walter.

Your question is an old one, so perhaps you have found all the information you were looking for.

If you have questoins, or can share some family geneology of the Seays or Harder, that would be very interesting.

Thanks,
Seay Harder

Johann Peter HERDER

Johann Peter was the oldest of the three sons of Palatine immigrant Johann Michael HÄRTER (1672-1716) & Maria Lucia TULLIUS of Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. I posted the families of brothers Michael and Jacob last year. There are no vital records of Joh. Peter's life: no birth, baptism, confirmation, marriage, or death records, no will and no gravestone. We have the baptism records of eight of his children, and his baptism sponsorships of many family members and others, usually with his wife Elisabeth Catharina.
Joh. Peter and family lived near the hamlet of Cheviot in Germantown, Columbia County, NY and farmed the family share of land granted to the Palatines remaining at the East Camp of 1710.

Johann Peter HERDER.
Hello Peter,

I am searching the signature on the back of a 1800's family photograph: Frederikke Langpap. It was taken by a photograher in Haderslev, Denmark. There are 69 photographs in the family album taken in the USA and Denmark <1800-1920>, but only 3 have names. My great grandfather Andreas Jensen(Andrew Johnson) married Christine (Mary) Jensen in Minnesota. Her death certificate states she came to Minnesota in 1876. Andrew is said to have come over as a youth with his family, but nothing is known of them here. Andrew died at 33 leaving behind wife and 4 year old son. My mother is 89 yrs old and remembers meeting Mary only once just before she died. Nothing of was ever mentioned of the danish families in the US or Denmark other then Andrew was from Copenhagen. I have no idea how Frederikka fits in the family or if she came to the U S.

Any matches on your end?
Ruthanne

Jacob HARDER (1714-1792)

Jacob Harder is the first person of the Harder surname believed to be born in America. He became a successful farmer and substantial land holdings near Claverack, Columbia County, NY. He is accepted by the DAR as a Revolutionary Veteran, although it is doubtful he actually served due to his age. It is very likely that five of his sons did serve.

There is some incorrect info about his children out there – I hope this will correct some of it. Note: Jacob is NOT the father of Jacob P. Harder who married Catharina Thomas, or the father of John Nicholas Harder of North Carolina as some would think.

Jacob HARDER (or HERDER), youngest child of Palatine immigrant Johann Michael HÄRDER (1672-1716) & Maria Lucia TULLIUS of Klosterkumbd, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Born on 7 Mar 1714 at Queensbury (Germantown), Columbia Co., NY. Died on 24 Feb 1792 prob. at Hudson, Columbia Co., NY; he was 77. Buried at Burial Ground, Route 23, Town of Greenport, Columbia Co., NY.
A tombstone of Jacob Harder is next to State Road 23 near Hudson, NY, with the tombstone of his wife Mary Harder. This is the only record we have of their birth and death dates. The will of Jacob Herder, yeoman of Hudson, was dated December 1790 and probated 8 Aug 1799. The will names his wife Catalina, deceased son John and surviving sons Michael, Peter, Jacob and Nicholas, and daughters Maritje, Jannetje, and Elizabeth. Jacob left farms at Squampamock (Ghent) and Hudson to each of his sons.
Jacob first married Maria VAN HOESEN, daughter of Jan Jurrian VAN HOESEN (~1678-Dec 1731) & Jannetje VAN SCHAAIK, on 3 Aug 1738 at Zion Evang. Luth. Ch., Loonenburg (Athens), Greene Co., NY. Born on 5 Mar 1717. Baptized at Klinckenberg; rec Luth. Ch., New York, NY, on 31 Mar 1717. Died on 21 Apr 1775 at Columbia Co., NY; she was 58. Buried at Burial Ground, Route 23, Town of Greenport, Columbia Co., NY.
No, I haven't found anything more as I've been working on other family lines. However, I did have someone tell me that I might want to consider Harter as an alternative spelling. Charles is the American version of Carl or Karl in Germany. You might want to keep that in mind when searching for ship or German records. What part of the U.S. did your Charles immigrate to?

(Yes, spelled that way), so chances are yours is realteed. John, Michaelb, benjamin, Henry, Joseph, Hiram. William, George. All listed from census records. There was a William H Harder who died in 1863 from Diptheria, and then another Wiliam JR who married a Sophia Smith of Meredith. He then died at age 40 in 1875. Email me if you need this paperwork. Good luck.

Am very interested in the Steventon line. My 3G grandfather, Joseph Steventon, was b. 2 Feb1825 in Rodington, Shropshire, England and d. 18 Jun 1898 in Oregon. He was the son of Edward and Jane Steventon. This has been a very difficult line to research. Please let me know if we may have a connection.

Hi,
I recently became aware of a sadly neglected group of graves along the side of Route 23 in the Town of Greenport, Columbia Co., NY. I can't find any documentation for the burial ground and I'm not local or in a position to do anything about it besides informing others. The gravestones identified are those of:
Jacob Harder (1714-1792), a Revolutionary Veteran and father to five others; also the first known Harder ever born in the Western Hemisphere and the ancestor of thousands;
his wife Mary Van Hoesen Harder (1717-1775);
Claudey I. Delamater (1752-1842), a Revolutionary Veteran;
his wife Elizabeth Harder Delamater (1757-1836);
and ??? , wife of Charles King.

If anyone has any information about this burial ground, can do anything to preserve it, or would like to see photographs, please write me at jaharder88@yahoo.com.
Sorry none of those names are familiar. My Steventon was married and died in Bridgnorth Shropshire but his children went to London. Whether he came from London originally or some other part of Shropshire I am still trying to find out. He had a grandson that went to California but his name was Frederick. Ther are Steventons in Shropshire from a very early date mostly to the North. Bridgnorth is in the South. My line goes from London to New Zealand but we have no Edwards. Best of luck...Bev

I'm researching Nicholas P Harder of Shiawassee for my husband, who is one of his great-great-great grandsons. My husband is a descendent of Nicholas and Margaret (Synder) Harder through thier daugher Hannah and on down through a completely female-to-female line. He has recently completed the mtDNA testing via ancestry.com DNA and is interested in comparing with anyone who is a descendent of a female lineage from Margaret Synder Harder.
