Obituary of John O. Hardesty d. 7/20/1919 in Oak Park, Ill.

The following obituary appeared in The Kokomo Daily Tribune on July 22, 1919 on page 1 column 3. The paper was published in Kokomo, Indiana.

J. O. HARDESTY PASSES AWAY AT OAK PARK

Was Owner and Editor of First Daily Paper Published in Kokomo.

LATER WENT TO ANDERSON

Founded Herald There-Became Widely Known as Political Writer.

John O. Hardesty, who commanded a Howard county [sic] company in the Civil war [sic] and who was one of the pioneer newspaper men of Kokomo, is dead at his home in Oak Park, Ill., having passed away there Sunday, at the age of 75 years. He was personally known to all of the people of Kokomo and of Howard county [sic] fifty years ago and is well remembered by all who survive from that period.

Mr. Hardesty’s newspaper career in Kokomo covered only a few years. He was owner and editor of the Kokomo Herald. His newspaper office was in the upstairs rooms in the old Moore block [sic], in Buckeye street [sic], west side, second door north from Walnut. It is said that he started the Herald as a daily, the first daily publication Kokomo ever had, but later changed it to a weekly, having demonstrated to his satisfaction that Kokomo was not yet large enough to support a daily newspaper.

In 1868 Mr. Hardesty left Kokomo and went to Anderson, where he founded the Anderson Morning Herald. Later, he owned the Anderson Daily Sun. A few years later, after ceasing active connection with Anderson newspaper circles, he wrote feature articles for metropolitan newspapers. He became widely known through his political writings. He was an ardent and uncompromising republican [sic]and, through his newspaper articles attracted statewide attention to himself and became a factor to be reckoned within state politics. A press dispatch from Anderson states that Mr. Hardesty is survived by a widow and daughter, and that his body will be laid away in the cemetery at Oak Park.

Mr. Hardesty’s wife was a daughter of Thomas J. Falkner, one of the very earliest of Kokomo’s citizens. Mr. Falkner was owner of much land now lying within the eastern half of the city and was founder of Kokomo’s first burial ground. He donated the ground now known as the Old Cemetery along about 1845, designating, it is said, in the deed that the space should be used for no purpose other than burial of the dead.

It is said the last visit Mr. Hardesty made to Kokomo, which was several years ago, was in regard to the Old Cemetery. At that time there was consideration of a proposition to convert the grounds, which had long been abandoned and neglected, into a park and have them come under the supervision of the city’s park board. Mr. Hardesty came here on behalf of the Falkner Family and let it be known that if the grounds should be converted to park purposes, he would set up a claim for them on the part of the Falkner heirs, asserting that the grounds would revert to them under the terms of the conveyance that had been made by Thomas Falkner, should they ever be used for other than burial purposes. It is said that his contentions in regard to the matter had much to do with the decision which led to the grounds being transferred from the county to the city and placed under the supervision of the board of cemetery regents.
To get in on this conversation. most of the Hardesty clan went West from either Illinois or Kentucky...can anyone here trace back to the mid-1800's and tie to the Hardesty clan of Ogle county, Illinois or Hamilton county, Illinois. Also, I have a current Hardesty, Truman (Dick) that lives in Denver...he's not well liked by his brother and sister, but a Hardesty never-the-less...Richard Hardesty, Tampa, Florida...as an OBTW, I have 197 pages of Hardesty history, beginning with Henry, born 1760 in Fayette county, PA

Hi Giana.
We're related. I remember Rudd, Martha and Sue when I was a little boy in Denver. They were my dad's half brother and sisters. My dad, John Duncan Hardesty was the son of your and my grandfather Rudd, Sr. My Dad's mother was Mary who I have yet to find anything about except that she was Rudd's wife before Ada. Sue was married to my mother's brother Everett Senter and they had a son who I understand is still living. I believe his name is Ev Senter, Jr. but when we were little we just called him "Butch". I also remember Martha was married to Eddy O'Shea and I believe he was killed by lighting while in the attic of their house. So many stories. I would love to hear from you if you know more.
Bob Hardesty

This is hard for me to follow. Richard Hardesty & Permelia Rudd were my ggg grandparents, too. Their son William Hardesty must be the brother of Rudd Hardesty, Jr. who you say was your grandfather's brother. Who was your grandfather?l My grandfather was the son of William Hardesty and Molly Van Lear Rush and his name was Rudd Hardesty, Sr., the father of my dad, John Duncan Hardesty, Sr.

As a hardesty researcher of many years, and with almost 200 pages of history, I would tell you there were only four Hardesty brothers that came from England in the very early 1700's...Hardesty/Hardisty is an English name derived from the region around Yorkshire, West Ridding province...as far as I know, there's nothing connected to the French in all of this...you might also look at Gwen Hardesty's website, as she has some 40,000 Hardesty names...

I don't know how you fit in with my family, but I think you must. Besides my Walter Scott Hardesty who moved to Ohio and brought his father Joseph, there was also a Richard Hardesty who moved from MD to Ohio. They were mostly in Jefferson County. Below is some of my Hardesty history. Hope it will help you. Let me know if you have any specific questions I can help with.

My grandfather was Walter Hardesty Cole, his mother Mary Jeanette Hardesty, her father Walter Scott Hardesty (both my father & brother were Walter Scott Coles), Walter's father was Joseph. Joseph's father Richard had 7 sons: and Thorton, George, William, Richard, Thomas, Walter, Joseph. Then there is a Richard, a Robert, Francis, Thomas, Arthur, and then two Williams -- back to 1550. My GGG Grandfather Joseph also had a son named Joseph, b. 1849. In Jefferson County Ohio there was a cousin named RIchard Hardesty, cousin or uncle of Walter Scott Hardesty. I know that those two moved to Ohio from MD, and you are most likely a descendant of one of them.

Good Luck!
Do you have mooore information on Mary Jane Walton? My Hardesty's in Iowa are connected to the WALTON line also. Solomon Leander Hardesty (b:1852 Keokuk) married Lettia Jane Walton (b:1859 Linn Co., IA) in 1876 in Adams County, IA. Solomon was a son of Samuel Hardesty & Mariah Headley. Lettia was a daughter of Nelson Walton and Susannah Leatherman of Allen County, Ohio. Samuel Hardesty was a grandson of Obediah Hardesty of Belmont County, OH.

Roger Cox

Re: indiana hardesty

Do you have a source for the date of birth you assign John HARDESTY?

John HARDESTY is also my GGGgrandfather. I am descended from second son David (B 1836, OH) and David’s wife Mary Jane WALTON.

Until now I have been trying to place John as son of Solomon Hardesty (b 1795, MD, married WARREN), son of the illustrious Obediah (b 1758, VA, married a woman referred to as Polly Paris). Solomon had a son John most researchers list as born “about 1815.”

Reading an obit for John, and working with census data, I now think John is too old to be the son of Solomon. The problem is … John rarely reports a consistent age. John’s reported age at his death make for conflicts with the date of birth of not only my previous assumptions, but also most of what he reported to census takers (1850 census would have him born 1813, 1860 census confirming 1805, and the 1870 census as born 1807). Did he get older than his years as he went along? Perhaps illegitimacy accounts for his scant mention in the Ohio Hardesty records.

John shows up in the 1850 census for Union Twp, Porter, as a miller; and in 1860 and 1870 as a farmer. Yesterday’s work with the Porter website; leads me to believe John HARDESTY was Justice of the Peace in Union and County Commissioner for Porter from 1855-1867.

There must be further record of him. John appears in the public record quite often as a witness or executor of wills in the genweb site for Porter: I am surprised his will has not been posted. Perhaps this document is in the not-yet-transcribed Part II of their historical accounts.
Until now, all I’d gleaned was that John was married to Nancy. From his obituary I now have a date of death (16 Aug 1878) and knowledge of Nancy’s surname: RINGLE.

I know nothing as yet about the RINGLE clan. Of course there are marriages to TWO Nancy Ringles going on about the same time in Porter; the irrelevant one is to Thomas CRISMAN (m 25 Nov 1830). I now have a marriage date for John HARDESTY and Nancy RINGLE (20 Jun 1831, perhaps in OH).
Well, I've heard of those plantations before, like 'Hardesty's Adventure.' Are they - and this George - commonly associated with the Hardesty brothers from England?

Speaking of Kentucky:
http://files.usgwarchives.org/ky/fulton/military/revolution/...

Henry HARDESTY, Sr.
(1765-1857)

Henry Hardesty was born January 16, 1765, near Hagerstown, Maryland, probably the only child born in the Colony of Maryland, His wife, Sara Dykes, was born in Virginia in 1784.

Henry was a French Huguenot, and Sarah was Dutch. As late as 1850, some members of the Hardesty family were using the spelling "HARDISTER". Henry's parents, Elizabeth and Benjamin, used this spelling throughout their lives.

Henry HARDISTER came to Kentucky when fourteen years of age, settling in Bourbon County near the Fayette County Line.

Ever hear of the Hardisters?

My great-aunt (Corday Buckley of Lexington KY) was national DAR in the days of Eleanor Roosevelt: I have all kinds of maternal lines running through these counties. Perhaps you and I are cousins twice over.

Ms. Fritz mentions a family bible here:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/f/r/i/Shirley-A-F...

A tantalizing clue is provided in history of son Isaac:

Isaac HARDESTY was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, May 22, 1822, and is a son of William and Louisa (KNOUF) HARDESTY. His father was one of the pioneers of Eastern Ohio, a farmer, miller and merchant, and started the first mill in Carroll County, Ohio. He was of Huguenot extraction, his grandfather having been expelled from France for his religious opinions. After the death of his father, which occurred when he was twenty-four years of age, Isaac HARDESTY worked seven years on the Sandy & Beaver Canal, and in 1853 came to Porter County, Ind., where he farmed until 1860, when he purchased a carding and saw mill in Union Township. Four years later, he resumed the plow, and is now owner of 307 acres of fine land, with commodious buildings and good improvements. Mr. Hardesty was married, December 24, 1846, to Catherine SHOLL, of Fayette County, Penn. Four children have graced this union - Mrs. Margaret P. HODSON, Mrs. Elva A. McELREE, Mrs. Ophelia M. YOUNG, and Louisa C.

Mr. Hardesty is a man of original and independent thought, was well as extensive reading. He is a Republican, and has frequently addressed his community on important questions of government. He has been Township Trustee about fifteen years. He is also a Christian, though not connected with any church, and an earnest Sunday school worker. Source: “Counties of Porter and Lake, Indiana, Historical and Biographical,” Goodspeed and Blanchard, 1882 page 342 Union Township

Would appreciate anything on first-born son to William and Louisa: John HARDESTY (b 1805 OH, d 1878 IN)or anything regarding Huguenot connection.

Re: Still looking for William Hardesty & Louisa Knouf/Knauff - & Huguenots

Thank you for your prompt reply!

When on the 'wrong' John Hardesty track, I followed those HARDESTY lines through Obediah to Yorkshire.

I may be onto something, however.

From "A History of Calvert County, Maryland" by Charles Francis Stein, published by the author with the cooperation of The Calvert County Historical Society, 1976, page 269:

"George HARDESTY was a Puritan from Virginia, who settled in Maryland prior to 1652. He was probably of French Huguenot origin. Shortly after his arrival in Maryland, he
"transported" his wife Cecelia from Virginia. George HARDESTY acquired land grants in the upper County, including Brandford, a grant of 150 acres, and Woolridge, a grant of 100 acres, both being described as lying on the south side of Land's Creek. He also acquired Hardesty's Adventure, a grant of 550 acres. George HARDESTY had a daughter who became the wife of George LINGAN, one of the leading men of the upper County, and a son George HARDESTY Jr., who is described as George HARDESTY, Gentleman, in his will dated 1694. George Jr., had six children, George, Thomas, Benjamin, Joshua, Calib and Cecelia, some of whom settled in Prince George's County. George HARDESTY III died in 1726, leaving to his sons, George and Henry, his dwelling plantation called The Den, a large tract near Lower Marlboro. His brother, or perhaps his cousin, Thomas HARDESTY, lived nearby at Brooke's Discovery. The Debt Book of 1753 lists George and Henry HARDESTY as owners of The Den, and shows William Hardesty at Hall's Reserve. The Tax List of 1782 shows Henry and Joseph HARDESTY as owners of The Den, and Joseph HARDESTY as owner of Alexander's Hope. The descendants of George HARDESTY, Gentleman, still live near the lands of their ancestor."

Refs. - Will of George HARDESTY, Gentleman - 1694.
Will of George HARDESTY - 1726.

I am not particularly attached to being a descendant of Huguenots ... it is just the only clue to date about the ancestry of William HARDESTY (b 12 Apr 1776 MD, d 8 May 1836 Carroll OH) and Louisa KNAUFF/KNOUF (b 1782, prhaps MD, d 1859 OH) and their ancestors.

I am liking my 'new' John (B 20 Jan 1805 in Columbiana, OH, D 16 Aug 1878 in Porter, IN; married Nancy, perhaps RINGLE). He was county commissioner in Porter, IN in those interesting days leading up to the Civil War. He must have a paper trail.

Given the more detailed birth & death dates, I'm wondering whether your files have anything pertinent for me.

My grandfather was Rudd Hardesty. Before he was married to Ada he was married to Mary and had John Duncan Hardesty, Sr. who was my father. I remember Martha & Sue, by Dad's half sisters. He also had a sister named Gladys (:my Aunt Bobbie) and brother Roy.
