I am researching the Hugh Harkins family. He immigrated to the American colonies in 1670s. Hugh and Sarah Harkins had a son John born May 7, 1787 in South Carolina. We know that he died September 27, 1885 from his cemetery stone in Sally Reed Cemetery, Belton, Anderson County, South Carolina, USA. The only record we have for his wife is a stone in the same cemetery as John for a Sarah Harkins born March 7, 1785 and death October 2, 1859.

The 1800 Census for the Pendlelton District in South Carolina has a listing for John Harkins. He has a young family with 2 children. The family appears in all future census through 1850. The 1850 census indicates only John and his wife Sarah are at home. The 1860 census has John living with Hugh and Martha Harkins. Hugh is Johns brother and Martha is Hugh’s wife. By the time of the 1870 census, John is 83 and living with a Bragan family. We know from earlier census that John and Sara had a family but we do not know the identity of his children.
