What does the back of the picture say? Just the title you
already have written here?

My ggg grandfather was James harlan and he moved with a couple of sons after his spouse died from Indiana to the
Washington then Oregon area. Not positive of the year but
by 1900 he was in Oregon.

So even if this isn't part of my family traveling it is nice to see the picture and the way they lived.

Thanks for posting.

Lindsey

Re: Harlan

I decided not to wait for more information, but embarked on a census search today, beginning in Cowlitz Co. WA in 1930. Found Paul, Goldie, & Ellis enumerated in Longview.

In 1920 I found them in Bourbon Co. KS, Franklin twp.: Paul, Goldie, daughter Opal, son Ellis

In 1910 I found them in Bourbon Co. KS, Marion twp.:
Paul, Goldie, daughter Opal. They have been married for 4 years, and Opal is 3.

Was not able to find Paul in 1900, but did find him in a couple of state censuses (1885 & 1895) with his family before marriage, so I have a mother & father for him.

In 1885 in Marion twp., Bourbon Co KS:
Geo. Harlan age 46 born in Ohio
E. Harlan (female) age 43 born in Ohio
Chas. Harlan age 19 born in Kansas
Jennie Harlan age 16 born in Kansas
Wilson Harlan age 14 born in Kansas
Frank Harlan age 12 born in Kansas
Grace Harlan age 10 born in Kansas
Effa Harlan age 8 born in Kansas
Mary Harlan age 6 born in Kansas
Paul Harlan age 3 born in Kansas
R. Harlan (male) age 1 born in Kansas
G. Pike (male) age 17 born in Missouri

I went back to the 1900 census for Bourbon County, and found Elizabeth Harlan, born July 1841 age 48, born in Ohio, parents both born in Ohio, and her daughter Mary, born April 1879 in Kansas, parents both born in Ohio. Elizabeth is a widow in 1900, gave birth to 11 children with 11 children still living.

The 1895 state census for Bouron Co. KS lists Elizabeth and her children Mary, Paul, and Raymond. George has evidently died by 1895. Still alive in 1885 but not in 1895 or in 1900, where Elizabeth lists herself as a widow.

The family is in Bourbon Co. KS in 1880. No Paul of course, since he wasn't born until 1882; but the two "missing" children in later censuses are Ida M.(age 18 and born in Ohio) and Anna L. (age 16 and born in Ohio).

They are even in Bourbon Co. KS in the 1870 census, with 4 children: Ida, Anna, Charles and Jennie. They are all born in Ohio according to this census, even though in later censuses Charles and Jennie are reported as born in Kansas.

I have not found George in Ohio. There are no matches for a George Harlan in Ohio with a birth of about 1839. The only 1839-born George Harlan is in Indiana. There are other George Harlan's in Ohio but with birthdates ranging from 1837-1842. Since I don't have any other family information for George, I cannot say if any of these others are him.

Hope this helped some. At least you have a new generation to work with. And a place in Kansas, if you didn't have it before: Bourbon County.

I can check some censuses if I have a time frame and possibly other records depending on where we find him. Do you know about when he was in Kansas? Or approximately when he came to Washington from Kansas? Do you have some birth information for any of these people that will give us some help as to where to go next?

If you're still in the Longview area, I'm a neighbor in a nearby town.

I am a Harlan descendant and don't know why anyone would object to your doing a Harlan Genealogy as long as you state facts. However, you must be aware thatAlpheusH.Harlan wrote
"History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family" in 1914, which was reprinted in l987 to celebrate the tricentennial of the coming to America. Then in 1990 Joydelle Garrett Wolfram
wrote the two volume "An Updated Genealogy: The Descandants of #194, Aaran and Elizabeth (Stuart)Harlan for the Harlan Reunion of Blue Ridge, Falls County, Texas.
B. Stein

'History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family in
