I am trying to find some information on a Ruth Newberry that was a cousin to John Hopkins and lived in the Ft. Worth, Texas area in 1927-1928. I don't know how or why your looked up this gravestone - but I thought you might have some info that you could give me. I have no idea what her married name might be. Thanks.

Thank you for your generous and thoughtful response - I appreciate the information you shared. An inquiry I've been working on is to find the source information for the fore-bearers of Johan Philip Harless. Another Harless researcher posted a family tree on ancestry.com that gave the following parents and grandparents for Johan P. Harless: Ferdinand Harless (his father) and Anna Christina Volger (his mother); Ferdinand's father in turn was Heinrich Harless and his mother was Catharina. I'm wondering if there's anyone "out there" who can confirm this information and reference some reliable sources? It would be great to confirm these fore-bearers to the first Harless to come to America.

Re: Harless Ancestors in Germany

If you seach on line for "St Peters Evangilical Lutheran Church 1750 - 1885 there is a great monuement picture with a brief history of the people listed (Harless-Price.
You could seach John Michael Price to find it too.

More information I have listed below.

Lutheran Church records of Billigheim- Phillip Herlas von Muehlhofen was comfirmed at age 15.

In 1738 Philip and Anna Margarette, along with her brothers (Johann) Michael, (William) Augustine, Henry and Daniel, immigrated to America. They sailed from Rotterdam at the mouth of the Rhine River in Holland to Philadelphia on a galley called Winter (often called the Winter Galley). On 5th September 1738 in Philadelphia, Philip made his oath of allegiance, a requirement of all male immigrants aged over 18 at that time.

A Brief History of Johan Philip Harless

According to J. L. Pritchard, who has published several writings on the Harless Family; most of the families in the United States are descendants of John Philip and Anna Margaretha (Preiss) Harless. However around 1812 there were three Harless brothers who came to this country. One settled in Chicago, another is believed to have settled in Tennessee, and the other one settled in the Nebraska Territory.

JOHAN PHILIP HARLESS 1716 -1772 married ANNA MARGARETHA PREISS in Offenbach, Germany on 17th of February 1738, but were residents of Germersheim, Bavaria, Germany.

There was still great political and religious unrest in Germany, and many people were fleeing for the "New World'. These people were known as Palatinates.

Philip and his new wife left Germany for America with several of her brothers. He arrived in Philadelphia on a ship named the "Winter Galley". He took the Oath of Allegiance on the 5th of September 1738.

Philip and Anna built their first home in the Shenandoah Valley in Orange County, Virginia. They later moved to a tract of land on Cow Pasture River near Lexington, four miles from Natural Bridge. It is likely that all of their children were born here. Philip moved again to the German New River Settlement, southwest of what is now Roanoke, probably because it was thought to be safe from Indians attacks. This is where Philip acquired land, and raised his family. He was also among those who in 1750 built the first Lutheran Church west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Philip and his sons', main occupation was farming and raising stock. However in addition they were asked to build roads for the military. It seems that the Indians had been peaceful, until 1749 when some Indians attacked the home of Adam Harmon, who lived on New River. They did considerable damage to his property, in addition to stealing some valuable skins. This is thought to be the first such act west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. However from then until after the Revolutionary War, the settlers in this area were never safe from attacks. In 1755 Vause's Fort, located on the James River, was attacked and destroyed by Indians. Twenty-four people were either killed or captured. Most of the livestock at the fort was slaughtered. Forts, stockades, and military roads then became a necessity. Several records of those years show that Philip and his sons were appointed Overseers for the construction of military roads.

Philip and Anna had seven children. Philip and Anna are buried in the Harless Cemetery at Long Shop, Virginia. A monument for their gravesite was unveiled on Memorial Day, 30th June 1948, to honor them.
Hello,
Does anyone have any sourced or record-backed information to confirm the information I've found (from publicly-posted family trees) for the Harless ancestors in Germany (the ones before Johan Phillip Harless and Anna Margaretha Preiss who came to America in 1738?)
Harless in Western Va.

I have not researched the Harless Family, but I do have a connection to it.

Elisha Harless born about 1830 lived in western VA. He married Jerusha Williams (my family) about 1851 - she was from Russell County. I have a listing of their eleven children.

Elisha and Jerusha died in Washington County, Va circa 1910.

I assume you know the name before it was anglicized, was PREISS-- not Price. At least that's how we have it in our records. I may have some other information about her (Margaretha), but my mother, Lou Harless Porter McCrary is very ill and not expected to survive long-- hence our increased interest at this time. My family's line of Harlesses moved to Texas right after the Civil War-- I believe there were several brothers and some sisters. There are still Harlesses in the Dallas area from that family, although my gr.grandfather had only one son who died childless.
